Book excerpt: By making Three Simple Rules and Five Marks of a Methodist accessible for a current United Methodist and Wesleyan audience, Abingdon Press has reintroduced Wesley’s formative identity and boosted our way of Christian living in thousands of congregations. The next most important document that Wesley delivered to the rapidly expanding societies and congregations was The Wesley Covenant Prayer and Renewal Service from 1755, which are crucial to Methodist identity. This service, a liturgical event in 1755, was preceded by several mornings of teaching from John Wesley about “the means of increasing serious religion.” Charles Wesley also wrote a hymn supporting the prayer – “Come, Let Us Use the Grace Divine.” Over the millennia since 1755, many Methodists have used this liturgy on New Year’s Eve – the Watch Night Service – as a service of renewal of the individual’s covenant with God for the coming year. More recently many churches have found other opportunities to provide this opportunity for the congregation. Wesley’s covenant renewal can function now as an accessible church-wide campaign that culminates in the liturgical affirmation and faithful promise to love God and neighbor faithfully. The campaign could be: 1) Used during Advent and culminate on New Year’s Eve with the Covenant prayer committed to memory and resolve. 2) Used from mid-September, with emphasis on homecoming and harvest, and culminated with the liturgical event on All Saint’s Day. 3) Used prior to Lent and culminate on Ash Wednesday, or 4) Used during Lent and culminate on during holy week (read prior to the passion of Jesus).

Book excerpt: A Stirring Story of Love and Faith and America's Great Promise When her mother suffers a stroke, medical student Deirdre O'Leary makes the difficult choice to put her career on hold to care for her. Dr. Matthew Clayborne is renowned for his amazing results with patients, but when Deirdre approaches him about helping her mother, she finds him challenging and surly. Deirdre has had enough of complicated men in her life. After her fiancé left her, she vowed never to give a man that kind of power again. Widower Dr. Matthew Clayborne is devoted to two things: his work with wounded soldiers and his four-year-old daughter, Phoebe. He won't abandon either of these priorities to care for one older woman. However, when Phoebe suffers a health scare, they're offered respite at the Irish Meadows farm, where his daughter's weakened lungs can recover--but only if he cares for Mrs. O'Leary. Matthew intends to hate Irish Meadows, yet he immediately feels at home, and soon both Mrs. O'Leary and Phoebe are showing improvement. But since he has no intention of leaving his life up north forever, and Deirdre has sworn off marriage in favor of her career, how will they deal with the undeniable attraction between them?

Book excerpt: God is faithful. His faithfulness is woven into the very fabric of his nature. All reality: creation and redemption rests on this solid foundation. We see the faithfulness of God throughout the Bible, as over and over again we read accounts of God providing, rescuing, healing and blessing his people; his promises made and kept. As he was faithful in ancient times, God is faithful today. In addition to God's unwavering faithfulness to his people, God is faithful to his Word, the Bible. If he has said he will do something, we can be assured that he will do it. He always accomplishes his plans and finishes everything he begins. It is God's faithfulness to his Word that this book is focused upon, specifically a promise God made as far back as the Garden of Eden. We see echoes little glimpses of this promise all through the Old Testament, woven like a beautiful thread of hope through every battle, human plot and scheme, tragedy and triumph. God's unstoppable plan continued to faithfully work out, just as he had promised, until it came to fruition in the person of his Son, Jesus Christ.

Book excerpt: Experience Paul's world-changing writings in the full, chronological context of his life story--from Pharisee and persecutor of the church to the most influential defender of the gospel of Jesus Christ. "Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ..." So goes Paul's typical introduction, a modest title for one of Christianity's most authoritative figures. Unique among the apostles, Paul was well-educated and well-respected in the Jewish community of the day. His story is one of dramatic conversion and passionate instruction. His life's work was becoming a servant of Jesus Christ. From pastor and teacher Dr. John MacArthur, One Faithful Life is the first-of-its-kind harmony of Paul's message and life. As with One Perfect Life--which weaved the Gospels into the seamless narrative of Jesus' life--One Faithful Life walks us chronologically through the biblical ministry of Paul, tying together background information from the Gospels, the book of Acts, and Paul's epistles to the growing movement of Christ-followers. In this comprehensive storyline of the Apostle Paul's life, you'll find: Verse-by-verse explanations and section introductions from one of the most respected pastor-teachers of our time Introductory commentary of the major themes and purpose of each of Paul's letters A fresh perspective on the enduring truths of the gospel message

Book excerpt: Two-term governor of Tennessee Bill Haslam reveals how faith--too often divisive and contentious--can be a redemptive and unifying presence in the public square. As a former mayor and governor, Bill Haslam has long been at the center of politics and policy on local, state, and federal levels. And he has consistently been guided by his faith, which influenced his actions on issues ranging from capital punishment to pardons, health care to abortion, welfare to free college tuition. Yet the place of faith in public life has been hotly debated since our nation's founding, and the relationship of church and state remains contentious to this day--and for good reason. Too often, Bill Haslam argues, Christians end up shaping their faith to fit their politics rather than forming their politics to their faith. They seem to forget their calling is to be used by God in service of others rather than to use God to reach their own desires and ends. Faithful Presence calls for a different way. Drawing upon his years of public service, Haslam casts a remarkable vision for the redemptive role of faith in politics while examining some of the most complex issues of our time, including: partisanship in our divided era; the most essential character trait for a public servant; how we cannot escape "legislating morality"; the answer to perpetual outrage; and how to think about the separation of church and state. For Christians ready to be salt and light, as well as for those of a different faith or no faith at all, Faithful Presence argues that faith can be a redemptive, healing presence in the public square--as it must be, if our nation is to flourish.

Book excerpt: The history of Divine dealings with human beings is replete with promises made and promises kept. In the composition of the Bible itself, we read promises declared and ultimately, faithfully fulfilled, sometimes centuries apart. The proofs are undeniable in scripture. Not one promise was left undone. ***** God's fulfilled promises and His eternal love are undeniable in contemporary human history, too. Many of these modern examples are recorded in the accounts in this book. My account is one of them. True stories related here are living and lasting testimonies to the indelible fact of the follow-through of God Almighty in the lives of real people, proven in space and time. God's reliability is not a theory, a wish, or an imagined dream. It's real ? which is why it is deemed "reliable." ***** The Bible is a book of redemption. The Promises of God are proclaimed with one purpose: to redeem human beings. Belief in that truth requires faith. Redemption is possible through God's grace alone. As you read each true account in this book, you will instantaneously recognize a definitive trend: God is gracious, faithful, and honors His commitments, each and every one, all the time. These stories are all about fulfillment of God's promises for our good. The God of the Bible is a personal God who declared clear and unmistakable promises, and fulfilled them, each and every one. Perhaps the greatest promise and fulfillment upon which the Christian faith rests, is Jesus Christ: His birth, life, teachings, crucifixion, and resurrection. That fulfilled story sets Biblical faith apart. It demands our attention and ultimately, our devotion. ***** In a day and time when so many world-driven promises are uttered and left uncompleted, it is eternally reassuring that all of the Promises of God can be counted on, because He Is Faithful. Trusting wholeheartedly in God's Promises is not a far-fetched and "hope-inspired" concept. It's a literal, down-to-earth, provable reality in a God who never wavers or fails. We can trust Him with every fiber of our beings.

A Methodist Gives Thanks 4. A Methodist Prays Constantly 5. A Methodist Loves Others This brief book, suitable for sharing with others, provides a meditation on each of these characteristics. Prayerfully apply them to your journey with Jesus. If you are part of the worldwide Methodist or Wesleyan family, these five marks will grant a greater knowledge and appreciation for why and how you follow Jesus. If you are located in another part of the body of Christ, you can emerge with a solid foundation to keep your spiritual house standing strong. Christians marked by these five habits, when taken together, have character. Each chapter ends with questions for reflection or discussion. “Steve Harper goes to the very heart of faithfulness as he describes and then calls upon all those who follow Wesley to live. It is lives of integrity that are the result of following these marks. Harper rightly says this will give the ring of truth to our daily living. He then goes on to identify the “marks” or “practices” that when followed will result in a life of righteousness, goodness, peace, and joy. It is a way of living in God’s gracious presence that he encourages for everyone, and it is a way of living I choose for myself.” —Rueben P. Job, author of Three Simple Rules: A Wesleyan Way of Living

Book excerpt: Health Care. Finance reform. The future of Catholic schools. Caring for the elderly. Abortion. Abuse scandals in the church. Business management, the economy, and the very welfare of our society. Confronted with a storm of issues, all of which call for their attention and concern, contemporary Catholics often find themselves confused and uncertain, and even at odds with each other, when trying to apply their faith to the realities of the world they live in. One Faith, Many Faithful provides numerous essays or "short takes" that tackle the wide range of matters of concern to Catholics, but does so in a spirit of complete faithfulness to Catholic teaching and tradition. The collection is divided into four parts: "Religion and Ethics," "Business and Politics," "Education and Family" and "People and Ideas." William J. Byron, SJ, applies and explains principles of Catholic social teaching throughout the book, which offers the reader clarity and concise exposition of the issues that are troubling the contemporary Catholic mind. This book is for all Catholics who want to move beyond the limited scope of contemporary debates and actually apply the ancient principles of their faith to difficult issues. Book jacket.

This book was released on 2011-07-12 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The bible says that we should not “make idols or set up an image or a sacred stone for ourselves.” God is a Jealous God and He delights in the praises and worship of His children. He promised that if we worship Him and Him only, that He will make us rejoice over our enemies; that your “light will break forth like the dawn and your healing will quickly appear. That your righteousness will go before you and the glory of the Lord will be your rear guard. Then you will call and the Lord will answer; and you will cry for help and he will say: Here I am” Isaiah 58:8. When we talk about idols, we tend to think of graven images; but not so. An idol is anything that we place before God; it can be a spouse, a friend, money, power, drugs, sex or anything that interfere or takes time away from our worship with God. Whatever you find yourself spending time with more than your time of worship with God is your idol. We may not think of these things as idols, but consider the amount of time we spend stressing or concentrating our focus on the things of the world that ultimately will be the cause of our losing our way to salvation. Sometimes we forget to honor the Lord who makes all things available to us only because one of our personal idols require more of our time, so we place God aside and focus our attention on wandering further away from Him; not knowing that He grieves at our disobedience. But, it is not too late; the bible says that the arms of God are not short; His ears are not deafened to our cries. I know sometimes we may feel that God will not answer or forgive us because we keep going back to the very idol we confessed to have left, but God wants to forgive us; for that reason He sent His only son to die for our sins, so that the world through Him might be saved. God knows how weak and sinful we are. No matter how holy and righteous we may think we are, ultimately, we are powerless and wretched at best. Paul, in II Corinthians says this of the flesh: “I was given a thorn in my flesh, a messenger of Satan, to torment me. Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Paul also says that he tried to do good deeds, but often ends up doing what he swore he would not do. We are just like Paul; we are weak and impressionable and prone to sin. That is why we need to have the Holy Spirit lead and guide our daily walk. We need to prostrate ourselves, lay our souls bare in front of He who pours out grace and forgiveness abundantly. In Christ, we are not of this world, but if we continue along the path of destruction, we will find ourselves standing outside the gates of heaven, asking “Lord where did I go wrong?” Genesis 28:12 “I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go, and I will bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.” Let us ask God now to forgive us our sins so that we can fully partake of His bountiful promises.

Is knowing God the same thing as being open to God? Is God's freedom to act independently of our knowing him actually how we know him most genuinely and deeply? In Unexpected Jesus, Craig Hovey explores in depth the idea that the Christian gospel is a surprising encounter that calls for people to risk living with a God who shows up in unexpected ways. The Gospels often portray Jesus Christ as elusive and difficult to grasp. Hovey helps the reader to "un-expect" Jesus--to preserve Jesus's reality as a surprise rooted in the resurrection. As living and free, the joyous presence of Christ in the world is also unfathomable and uncontainable. Jesus's being free and surprising--unexpected--strengthens Christians' trust in God and helps them to live in God's world.
