Book excerpt: The Organic Chemistry of Palladium, Volume 1: Metal Complexes deals with the number of organic reactions that can be catalyzed by palladium, particularly as regards the structures bonding, and reactions of the metal complexes. The book discusses monodentate ligands which are either neutral (carbonyls, isonitriles, carbenes) or anionic (methyl, phenyl, ethynyl, hydride). The text also examines the complexes formed by 1,3-. 1,4-, and 1,5-diolefins where four carbon atoms are bound to the metal. Palladium (II) can undergo a reaction with the 1,3-dienes and results in a ?-allylic complexes where only three carbon atoms are coordinated to the metal. (The bonding situation in complexes 1,4- and 1,5-dienes, where no great interaction between the olefins are similar to that in monoolefin complexes, is straightforward), Olefins can also react with palladium chloride in protic solvents to produce ketones (or aldehydes) or organic coupling products. Some experiments conducted by Huttel et al shows that some palladium was precipitated from the reactions giving lower yields, resulting in various aldehydes and ketones as by products. The book also discusses cyclopentadienyl and benzene complexes. The text can prove beneficial for researchers, investigators and scientists whose works involve organic chemistry, analytical chemistry, physical chemistry and inorganic chemistry.

The last Gmelin treatment of it was in 1942, and knowledge of its properties and chemistry has made enormous strides since then. This volume is primarily concerned with binary compounds and with the coordination complexes derived from them. Although it is a member of the nickel-palladium-platinum triad, it more closely resernblas platinum in its binary and coordination chemistry, though being a second-row transition element it displays less tendency than does platinum to assume higher oxidation states. ln heterogeneous and homogeneous catalysis, referred to at appropriate points, palladium and its complexes are of great importance in bulk and fine chemieals production, effecting a wide variety of organic transformations. The arrangement of material in this volume follows the traditional Gmelin arrangement. Within each category of compounds or complexes the material is arranged, as usual, in order of ascending metal oxidation states (e. g., palladium(ll) precedes palladium(IV)). The chemistry of the palladium-hydrogen system is so large that it merits a separate volume, so this book starts with the binary oxides and oxopalladates followed by hydroxides, hydroxo complexes and aquo complexes. Then nitrides and nitrates are treated. They are followed by the large chapters on halides and their complexes (172 pages). The largest single chapter in this volume (11 0 pages) deals with chlorides, chloropalladates and other chloro complexes.

Book excerpt: Understanding the reactivity of metal complexes with molecular oxygen will facilitate the development of catalysts that can enable the widespread use of molecular oxygen as an oxidant for organic synthesis. This thesis presents two new classes of reactions between metal complexes and molecular oxygen. Neutral five-coordinate Pt complexes were tested for reactivity in the presence of molecular oxygen. In arene solution, the complexes (t̳B̳u̳̳M̳e̳2̳ nacnac)PtMe3 (1, t̳̳B̳u̳M̳e̳2̳ nacnac- = [((4-tBu-2,6-Me2C6H2)NC(CH3))2CH]-), (M̳e̳3̳ Me-nacnac)PtMe3 (2, M̳e̳3̳ Me-nacnac- = [((2,4,6-Me3C6H2)NC(CH3))2CCH3]-), and (t̳B̳u̳2̳ PyPyr)PtMe3 (3, t̳B̳u̳2̳ PyPyr- = 3,5-di-tert-butyl-2-(2-pyridyl)pyrrolide) reacted immediately with oxygen to form peroxo species in which two oxygen atoms bridge between the metal center and a carbon atom in the ligand backbone. In contrast, no reaction between ( i̳P̳r̳2̳ AnIm)PtMe3 (4a, i̳P̳r̳2̳ AnIm− = [o- C66H4-{N(C6H3 i Pr2)}(CH=NC6H3 i Pr2)]−) or (M̳e̳3̳ AnIm)PtMe3 (4b, M̳e̳̳3̳ AnIm− = [o-C6H4- {N(C6H2Me3)}(CH=NC6H2Me3)]−) and oxygen was observed. As activation of oxygen by five- coordinate PtIV species was found to involve cooperation between the metal center and the ligand, the ability of the ligand to participate in the oxygen binding appears to be a vital component. Oxygen atom transfer reactions of the novel peroxo species are also presented. In a separate study, an unusual reaction involving the activation of both molecular oxygen and a C-H bond at the same metal center was investigated. Pd(P(Ar)(tBu)2)2 (15, Ar = naphthyl) was found to react with molecular oxygen at room temperature in arene solvent to form a hydroxide dimer in which one equivalent of phosphine per Pd was lost and the remaining phosphine was cyclometalated through the naphthyl ring. At low temperature, two intermediates were observed. The nature of these intermediates suggests a mechanism involving initial reaction of Pd(P(Ar) (tBu)2)2 with O2 followed by the C-H activation step. In a final chapter unrelated to oxygen reactivity, the generation and characterization of a gold III̳-alkene complex by NMR and X-ray crystallography is presented. Such species have been proposed as intermediates in catalytic reactions but until recently none had been observed.

Relative Pt-X Bond Dissociation Energies (BDE's) for these complexes have been calculated from experimentally measured equilibrium and organic BDE's. Changes in relative BDE's are noted when ligands for the complexes are exchanged. Oxygen atom transfer reactions by a new platinum hydroxo catalyst have been studied. This catalyst is generated by the reaction of a platinum oxo complex with water and catalytically activates the reaction of the this complex with ethylene. The kinetics of this reaction have been studied and a reaction pathway has been proposed. The synthesis and characterization of a series of heteroatom substituted gold imido complexes have been reported. It has been demonstrated that the stability of gold imido complexes has a linear free energy relationship with the donor strength of the adjacent phosphine ligand. The decomposition of the complex involves the release of a free nitrene. Larger phosphine ligands retard the decomposition, and the decomposition is blocked by alkylation of the hydrazido ligand.

The work is primarily organized by methods, but also covers highly relevant complexes, such as metal-polymer coordination compounds. This updated reference discusses recent developments in cryosynthesis, electrosynthesis, and tribosynthesis (popular as it doesn’t require organic solvents), with special attention paid to ‘greener’ methodologies and approaches. Additionally, the book describes physical methods of zero-valent metal interaction with organic matter, including sputtering, ultrasonic treatment and synthesis in ionic liquids. The book presents completely new content as a follow-up to the 1999 Elsevier Science publication Direct Synthesis of Coordination and Organometallic Compounds that was edited by Dr. Garnovskii and Dr. Kharisov. Covers current methods and techniques of metal interactions with organic media leading to metal chelates, adducts, di- and polymetallic complexes, metal-containing macrocycles, supported coordination compounds (i.e., metal complexes on carbon nanotubes), and more Describes reactivities of distinct forms of elemental metals (powders, sheets, nanoparticles (including a host of less-common metal nanostructures) with organic phase (liquid, solid and gaseous) and water Includes experimental procedures, with examples of direct synthesis, at the end of each chapter

Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled DESIGN AND SYNTHESIS OF METAL PHOSPHINE COMPLEXES OF PALLADIUM(II) AND GOLD(I) WITH VARIOUS RECEPTOR LIGANDS FOR ION-CONTROLLED OR PHOTORESPONSIVE HOST-GUEST CHEMISTRY Submitted by Tang Hau San for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Hong Kong in August 2006 A series of palladium(II) phosphine complexes containing different receptor sites, [Pd(PPh R) Cl] [R = C H NHCOCH, C H N(CH )COCH, 2 2 2 6 4 3 6 4 3 3 C HNHCONHPh, C HNHCOPyr and C H NHCO(CH )Pyr] have been 6 4 6 4 6 4 2 3 prepared. Two X-ray crystal structures have been determined, in which one of the crystal structures showed hydrogen bonding interactions between the amide protons and the Cl ions with distances of ca. 2.466 A. The photophysical properties of these complexes have been studied and their emission origins were elucidated. The binding properties of the complexes towards anions have 1 31 been studied by H NMR, P NMR, UV-vis and emission spectrophotometry, in which drastic changes in the ratio of trans to cis isomers upon addition of 31 anions were observed in the P NMR titration studies. The present ion-induced conformational change involving a trans-cis isomerization of the square-planar palladium(II) complex via the binding of anions to amide or urea functionalities through hydrogen bonding interactions represents a new class of ion-controlled switching devices based on transition metal systems. A series of gold(I) alkynyl phosphine complexes containing azobenzene or stilbene functionalities, [{Au(PPh )} (C≡C-L-C≡C)] and [Au (P DEGREESP) (C≡C-L- 3 2 4 2 C≡C) ] [L = C H -N=N-C H or C H -CH=CH-C H; P DEGREESP = dppm, dcpm, 2 6 4 6 4 6 4 6 4 Ph PN(C H F-p)PPh, Ph PN( Pr)PPh, Ph PN(C H )PPh] have been 2 6 4 2 2 2 2 14 29 2 synthesized and characterized. The X-ray crystal structure of [Au (dppm) (C≡C- 4 2 L-C≡C) ] revealed that the two azobenzene ligands in the tetranuclear complex adopted a trans disposition with the presence of short intramolecular Au Au contacts. The azobenzene-containing gold(I) complexes showed emissions both in dichloromethane solution at room temperature and in 77 K glass, which were assigned as a metal-perturbed intraligand (IL) origin mainly derived from the π-π*(C≡C) states with some mixing of a π-π* character of the azo unit. On the other hand, the emissive origin of the stilbene-containing gold(I) complexes was assigned as derived from the π-π* excited state of the stilbene moiety with some mixing of the alkynyl units, and probably mixed with σ(Au-P) → π*(C≡C) excited state in the solid states. The photoisomerization properties of the dinuclear and tetranuclear complexes have been studied, in which a tetranuclear macrocyclic gold(I) alkynyl phosphine complex was demonstrated to function as a dual input molecular logic with photoswitching behaviour that could be controlled by addition or removal of silver(I). In addition, several gold(I) complexes with different crown ether pendants including the mercapto-azacrown ether-containing complexes, [Au (P DEGREESP)(S-A15C5) ] [P DEGREESP = dppm, dcpm] and the mononuclear gold(I) alkynyl 2 2 complexes, [Au(PPh )(C≡CR)] [R = B15C5, B15S5], and dinuclear gold(I) complexes with oligo(ethylene oxide) linkages, [{(Ph P)

This book was released on 2003 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an effort to design complexes in which electrochemical reduction does not result in loss of the chiral ligand, five different bis(oxazoline) ligands were prepared (3, 5, 7, 8 and 9). 3 was found to have poor solubility and an exceedingly negative reduction potential of Ep[subscript]c= -2.38 V. Chemical reduction studies of 5 revealed that the bis(oxazoline) ligand is ejected during the reduction process. Compound 7 was found to have a reduction potential of Ep[subscript]c= -1.12 V. However, ejection of the chiral ligand occurs when other bis(oxazoline) platinum and palladium dichloride complexes are reduced. Therefore, a neutral PdClMe complex (8) with a reduction potential of Ep[subscript]c= -2.97 V and a cationic Pd(CH[subscript]3CN)Me complex (9) (Ep[subscript]c= -1.38 V) were also prepared. A platinum complex of the bidentate phosphine ligand was then investigated. Electrochemistry studies revealed that 11 undergoes a two-electron reduction process in which the ligand remains bound to the metal. The synthesis of Pt(DIOP)(trans-stilbene) through the chemical and electrochemical reduction of 11 further demonstrated that DIOP remains bound to platinum after reduction of 11.

Book excerpt: Chapter 1. Herein, an overview of our approach to developing dual-catalytic reactions using Lewis acidic gold(I) and Lewis basic palladium(0) is described. This approach allows for the one-pot functionalization of organogold intermediates by creating a new C-C bond. Chapter 2. A new strategy for gold and palladium dual-catalytic reactivity enhanced the synthetic usefulness of vinylgold intermediates by providing C-C cross-coupling as an alternative to protodemetalation. This dual-catalytic strategy was showcased through the synthesis of butenolides and isocoumarins. Kinetic and mechanistic studies supported the proposed mechanism. Chapter 3. The relative kinetic basicities of a series of substituted and hybridized organogold compounds was examined through competitive protodeauration experiments. The effect of electron-withdrawing and electron-donating substituents on the rate of protodeauration of alkenylgold and arylgold compounds was explored. Hybridization effects and a Hammett correlation indicated the involvement of the C-C n system in the protodeauration of vinylgold, alkynylgold, and arylgold complexes. Chapter 4. A new Heck-type reaction accessed the migratory insertion chemistry of palladium from organogold complexes. Observation, isolation, and characterization of a palladium intermediate established the role of gold/palladium transmetalation in this reaction. Chapter 5. A vinyl aziridine activation strategy cocatalyzed by Pd(0) and a Au(I) Lewis acid has been developed. This rearrangement installed a C-C and C-N bond in one synthetic step to form pyrrolizidine and indolizidine products. Two proposed mechanistic roles for the gold cocatalyst were considered: (1) carbophilic gold ca-talysis or (2) azaphilic gold catalysis. Mechanistic studies support an azaphilic activation of the aziridine over a carbophilic activation of the alkene. Chapter 6. Chemo- and regioselectivity in the gold and palladium dual-catalytic synthesis of butenolides and isocoumarins was explored. The dual-catalytic system selectively promoted oxidative addition at the C-O bond over the C-Br bond, providing a useful C-Br handle for downstream Sonogashira coupling. The reaction was regioselective, forming the 6-membered isocoumarin over the 5-membered isobenzofuranone (8:1). Preliminary results are discussed herein. Control reactions demonstrated the involvement of both gold and palladium in the reaction and are consistent with the originally proposed mechanism (Chapter 2), whereby gold activates the substrate prior to palladium.
