This unique volume fulfills the need for a source book that usefully combines a concise formulation of the method, a range of important applications to variational problems, and background material concerning manifolds, non-compact transformation groups and functional spaces. Highlighting the role in functional analysis of invariance and, in particular, of non-compact transformation groups, the book uses the same building blocks, such as partitions of domain and partitions of range, relative to transformation groups, in the proofs of energy inequalities and in the weak convergence lemmas.

Book excerpt: The material presented in this book is suited for a first course in Functional Analysis which can be followed by Masters students. While covering all the standard material expected of such a course, efforts have been made to illustrate the use of various theorems via examples taken from differential equations and the calculus of variations, either through brief sections or through exercises. In fact, this book will be particularly useful for students who would like to pursue a research career in the applications of mathematics. The book includes a chapter on weak and weak topologies and their applications to the notions of reflexivity, separability and uniform convexity. The chapter on the Lebesgue spaces also presents the theory of one of the simplest classes of Sobolev spaces. The book includes a chapter on compact operators and the spectral theory for compact self-adjoint operators on a Hilbert space. Each chapter has large collection of exercises at the end. These illustrate the results of the text, show the optimality of the hypotheses of various theorems via examples or counterexamples, or develop simple versions of theories not elaborated upon in the text.

The book is designed in such a way as to provide a smooth transition between elementary and advanced topics and its modular structure allows for an easy assimilation of the content. Starting from a dedicated chapter on the axiom of choice, subsequent chapters cover Hilbert spaces, linear operators, functionals and duality, Fourier series, Fourier transform, the fixed point theorem, Baire categories, the uniform bounded principle, the open mapping theorem, the closed graph theorem, the Hahn–Banach theorem, adjoint operators, weak topologies and reflexivity, operators in Hilbert spaces, spectral theory of operators in Hilbert spaces, and compactness. Each chapter ends with workable problems. The book is suitable for graduate students, but also for advanced undergraduates, in mathematics and physics. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces the basic concepts of real and functional analysis. It presents the fundamentals of the calculus of variations, convex analysis, duality, and optimization that are necessary to develop applications to physics and engineering problems. The book includes introductory and advanced concepts in measure and integration, as well as an introduction to Sobolev spaces. The problems presented are nonlinear, with non-convex variational formulation. Notably, the primal global minima may not be attained in some situations, in which cases the solution of the dual problem corresponds to an appropriate weak cluster point of minimizing sequences for the primal one. Indeed, the dual approach more readily facilitates numerical computations for some of the selected models. While intended primarily for applied mathematicians, the text will also be of interest to engineers, physicists, and other researchers in related fields.

Book excerpt: In 1950, VL Klee proved that a Banach space is reflexive if and only if its unit ball is weakly compact. In 1957, RC James showed that a separable Banach space is reflexive if and only if every continuous linear functional attains its norm. In 1964, he extended this result to all Banach spaces, and then, in the same year, combined his results with that of Klee to give the celebrated theorem which now bears his name; a closed convex subset C ⊂ X of a Banach space is weakly compact if and only if every continuous linear functional x ∗ ∈ X∗ attains its supremum over C. In 1971 James showed that completeness is a necessary hypothesis for his theorem. In the decades since, considerable attention has been paid to extensions of James' Theorem and simplifications of his proof. In this dissertation we provide an exposition of the relevant concepts and results, and present an original proof for the 2019 result by Delbaen and Orihuela that a closed and bounded convex set C ⊂ X is weakly compact if and only if there is a Mackey open subset U of X∗ such that x ∗ achieves its supremum over C for all x ∗ ∈ U.

Book excerpt: With an addendum by Wu Congxin (Harbin Institute of Technology)Linear Functional Analysis resulted from a series of lectures Orlicz gave in Beijing, China, 1958. The orignal edition was published in Chinese in 1963. It contains all the major theorems that would normally appear in a modern text, the results of special interest to the Polish school, and others which are not easily available elsewhere. Orlicz provided in this book some rare insight and motivation in the subject which was initiated by the Polish school. An addendum to some recent results in Orlicz spaces is included.

Book excerpt: This textbook is a completely revised, updated, and expanded English edition of the important Analyse fonctionnelle (1983). In addition, it contains a wealth of problems and exercises (with solutions) to guide the reader. Uniquely, this book presents in a coherent, concise and unified way the main results from functional analysis together with the main results from the theory of partial differential equations (PDEs). Although there are many books on functional analysis and many on PDEs, this is the first to cover both of these closely connected topics. Since the French book was first published, it has been translated into Spanish, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Romanian, Greek and Chinese. The English edition makes a welcome addition to this list.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an introduction to the theory of topological vector spaces, with a focus on locally convex spaces. It discusses topologies in dual pairs, culminating in the Mackey-Arens theorem, and also examines the properties of the weak topology on Banach spaces, for instance Banach’s theorem on weak*-closed subspaces on the dual of a Banach space (alias the Krein-Smulian theorem), the Eberlein-Smulian theorem, Krein’s theorem on the closed convex hull of weakly compact sets in a Banach space, and the Dunford-Pettis theorem characterising weak compactness in L1-spaces. Lastly, it addresses topics such as the locally convex final topology, with the application to test functions D(Ω) and the space of distributions, and the Krein-Milman theorem. The book adopts an “economic” approach to interesting topics, and avoids exploring all the arising side topics. Written in a concise mathematical style, it is intended primarily for advanced graduate students with a background in elementary functional analysis, but is also useful as a reference text for established mathematicians.

Some of the papers have connections with complex function theory in one and several variables, probability theory and mathematical physics.Surveys of some areas of recent progress in functional analysis are given and related new results are presented. The topics covered in this volume supplement the discussion of modern functional analysis in the previous Proceedings volumes. Together with the previous volumes, the reader obtains a good impression of many aspects of present-day functional analysis and its applications. Parts of this volume can be used profitably in advanced seminars and courses in functional analysis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It begins in Chapter 1 with an introduction to the necessary foundations, including the Arzelà–Ascoli theorem, elementary Hilbert space theory, and the Baire Category Theorem. Chapter 2 develops the three fundamental principles of functional analysis (uniform boundedness, open mapping theorem, Hahn–Banach theorem) and discusses reflexive spaces and the James space. Chapter 3 introduces the weak and weak topologies and includes the theorems of Banach–Alaoglu, Banach–Dieudonné, Eberlein–Šmulyan, Kre&ibreve;n–Milman, as well as an introduction to topological vector spaces and applications to ergodic theory. Chapter 4 is devoted to Fredholm theory. It includes an introduction to the dual operator and to compact operators, and it establishes the closed image theorem. Chapter 5 deals with the spectral theory of bounded linear operators. It introduces complex Banach and Hilbert spaces, the continuous functional calculus for self-adjoint and normal operators, the Gelfand spectrum, spectral measures, cyclic vectors, and the spectral theorem. Chapter 6 introduces unbounded operators and their duals. It establishes the closed image theorem in this setting and extends the functional calculus and spectral measure to unbounded self-adjoint operators on Hilbert spaces. Chapter 7 gives an introduction to strongly continuous semigroups and their infinitesimal generators. It includes foundational results about the dual semigroup and analytic semigroups, an exposition of measurable functions with values in a Banach space, and a discussion of solutions to the inhomogeneous equation and their regularity properties. The appendix establishes the equivalence of the Lemma of Zorn and the Axiom of Choice, and it contains a proof of Tychonoff's theorem. With 10 to 20 elaborate exercises at the end of each chapter, this book can be used as a text for a one-or-two-semester course on functional analysis for beginning graduate students. Prerequisites are first-year analysis and linear algebra, as well as some foundational material from the second-year courses on point set topology, complex analysis in one variable, and measure and integration.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new notion of Frechet differentiability is introduced for maps between Banach spaces which are dual spaces, and it is shown that diffeomorphisms in the class of mappings thus isolated preserve the bounded weak-star topology as well as the ordinary metric topology. Basic Banach manifold differential topology is redeveloped under the assumption that the transition functions between the coordinate charts possess this refined type of differentiability, and it is pointed out that such manifolds possess additional structures not found on general manifolds: for example, a globally defined weaker topology, and Finsler metrics in which boundedness is equivalent to compact closure in the global weaker topology.
