Book excerpt: Winner of the Lincoln Prize A landmark Civil War history told from a fresh, deeply researched ground-level perspective. At the crux of America’s history stand two astounding events: the immediate and complete destruction of the most powerful system of slavery in the modern world, followed by a political reconstruction in which new constitutions established the fundamental rights of citizens for formerly enslaved people. Few people living in 1860 would have dared imagine either event, and yet, in retrospect, both seem to have been inevitable. In a beautifully crafted narrative, Edward L. Ayers restores the drama of the unexpected to the history of the Civil War. From the same vantage point occupied by his unforgettable characters, Ayers captures the strategic savvy of Lee and his local lieutenants, and the clear vision of equal rights animating black troops from Pennsylvania. We see the war itself become a scourge to the Valley, its pitched battles punctuating a cycle of vicious attack and reprisal in which armies burned whole towns for retribution. In the weeks and months after emancipation, from the streets of Staunton, Virginia, we see black and white residents testing the limits of freedom as political leaders negotiate the terms of readmission to the Union. With analysis as powerful as its narrative, here is a landmark history of the Civil War.

Book excerpt: Southern Revenge is the Civil War history of Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, the only Northern town burned by the Confederates. This unique story is told appropriately through not only modern scholarship, but also through rare photographs, diary accounts, and period newspaper articles which let the victims speak for themselves.Chambersburg, a quiet farming community near the Maryland border, was truly the crossroads of destiny. The home of the Cumberland Valley Railroad, that progressive community had much to offer the war effort. To give but one example, the railroad system provided a much needed supply route that could be used by either army.

Book excerpt: During World War II, the US government interned more than 1,200 captured Italian soldiers at the Letterkenny Army Ordnance Depot located near Chambersburg, Pennsylvania. These troops collaborated with the United States in a collective effort to defeat the Axis powers. They formed the 321st Italian Quartermaster Battalion, and their work consisted mainly of stocking and shipping materials--ammunition, military vehicles, weapons, and machinery parts--to the war fronts in the European and Pacific theaters of operation. For entertainment, the soldiers formed an orchestra and band and for sport, several different company soccer teams. As a sign of their faith, they built a chapel and bell tower, which are still used today. Many POWs forged deep friendships with Americans, and after the war, a few married their sweethearts and returned to live in the United States. Today, warm relations still continue between children and grandchildren of the POWs and the wider Chambersburg community.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections of Chambersburg, Pa: Chiefly Between the Years 1830-1850 These Recollections of Chambersburg have been written for the purpose of giving the present inhabitants of the town some knowledge of the buildings that existed here from fifty to seventy years ago, with the uses to which they were put, and some acquaintance with the people who lived here at that time. The great change that has taken place in the town itself will be appreciated by any person who, with a copy of this book in his hand, will take his stand in a square of any of the principal streets and compare the picture it now presents to his eye with the picture of it presented in these Recollections. Nor will he be much less struck with the change in population, for he will observe that few of the families once prominent in the professions, in business, in public life or in politics, are represented here now. Most of the larger and finer buildings that existed here before the great fire of 1864, were erected between the years 1810 and 1830, but a large number of those described dated from a much earlier period. The town gives evidence of healthy growth. It has not only been built up closer within its old limits, but has extended in all directions, and the improvements outside of the line of fire are in keeping with those within it. In thus rebuilding and extending it, its inhabitants have reared a splendid monument to themselves. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of the War: Or Incidents Which Transpired in and About Chambersburg, During the War of the Rebellion It was in Chambersburg that John Brown, then known only as Dr. Smith, the prospector of Maryland ores, planned his mad raid on Harper's Ferry and fought the first skirmish of the war two years before the divided sections could realize that war was upon them, and the blackened walls and broken columns and withered shades which told of Chambersburg's desolation in 1864, were measurably the sequel of the innocent hospitality given to the unknown John Brown five years before. There is, therefore, much of the thrilling romance of the war's history that centres in and about Chambersburg, and itis unfortunate that it has not been preserved by some competent historian. The unwritten chapters of the war which relate to Chambersburg, would make a volume of surpassing interest, and add much to the as yet imperfect history of the greatest war of modern times. With the exception of a few unpretentious scraps of history about the Lee invasion and the burning of Chambersburg, there has been nothing written in any way calculated to preserve in history the trials and sacrifices of the faithful border people. In 1734, Scots-Irish immigrant Benjamin Chambers recognized the vegetation and powerful waters here, and he chose the Connococheague Creek and the Falling Spring as the location for his grain mill. Chambersburg has since served as a focal point of transportation as a result of its location at the crossroads of the historic Lincoln Highway and Route 11. Chambersburg journeys back to witness events such as the devastation of the Confederate burning of 1864, the creation of the majestic square and Memorial Fountain, and circus time at Wolf Lake. This collection of original images captures the times of trains and trolleys, recollects fires and floods, and pays tribute to the people and places that have made Chambersburg a unique and persevering community.
