Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Trial of a Trail: From Cody of the Yellowstone, With Map Much of the pleasure of an outing lies in the antici pation of the trip itself. For a long time we had been looking forward to a Yellowstone trip. When it was definitely decided to go this summer, we became enthus iastic. It had been a study when and how to make the trip. June was regarded by many as the better month, thus escaping the mosquitoes of July and the dust of August; others thought July preferable as the flowers then were in full bloom; and again the weather was yet too cool in June to travel in the Park with comfort while August and September Claimed for themselves absence of mosquitoes, they had neither the beautiful flowers of July nor the full flowing streams of snow water to offer. By the middle of August the snows have entirely disappeared from the mountain sides and forests, and the white mantle of winter lingers only on the loftiest peaks. The scantily fed streams lose much of their beauty until they are fed again by the later autum nal rains. Weighing these various considerations it was decided to start the first of July, taking the Burlington Route from Chicago to Cody, Wyo. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from John Ermine of the Yellowstone One fine morning in the fall of '64 Alder Gulch rolled up its shirt sleeves and fell to the upheaving, sluicing, drifting, and cradling of the gravel. It did not feel exactly like old-fashioned everyday work to the muddy, case-hardened diggers. Each man knew that by evening he would see the level of dust rise higher in his long buckskin gold-bags. All this made for the day when he could retire to the green East and marry some beautiful girl - thereafter having nothing to do but eat pie and smoke fragrant cigars in a basking sunshine of no-work. Pie up at Kustar's bake-shop was now one dollar a pie, and a pipe full of molasses and slivers was the best to be had in the market. Life was hard at Alder in those days - it was practical; and when its denizens became sentimental, it took these unlovely forms, sad to relate. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Yellowstone National Park: Union Pacific System, Popular and Direct Yellowstone Route The Union Pacific System is the avenue of direct approach. James Bridger, one of the first white men to discover Yellowstone, proved this in 1856 by drawing a charcoal line across a map to indicate the shortest way to get there. In Bridger's day but few believed that any such place as Yellowstone existed. Time has vindicated the early explorer in both his contentions the Park is a fact - and his penciled short line is the route followed by the Union Pacific. There are no burned-over tracts in the forest, there are no barren, rocky slopes, the road is lined with grass and wild flowers grow in the greatest profusion and variety, and altogether the scene is constantly one not only of grandeur, but of intense beauty quite indescribable. He decided to write a book telling of all its wonders for their benefit. He visited every place of interest and has told it in his own flow of colloquialism' which the readers of advance sheets proclaim great. Bat has told what he thinks is the most interesting way to travel through the Park, also, he has told which places he found the most enjoyable. He has explained the most interesting things in the Park, where they are, how to find them and when to go. The little man of brawn and brain has told several amusing stories of old, ancient hunters and trappers as best his colloquy will permit.
