Book excerpt: Active Network Analysis gives a comprehensive treatment of the fundamentals of the theory of active networks and its applications to feedback amplifiers. The guiding light throughout has been to extract the essence of the theory and to discuss those topics that are of fundamental importance and that will transcend the advent of new devices and design tools. The book provides under one cover a unified, comprehensive, and up-to-date coverage of these recent developments and their practical engineering applications. In selecting the level of presentation, considerable attention has been given to the fact that many readers may be encountering some of these topics for the first time. Thus basic introductory material has been included. The work is illustrated by a large number of carefully chosen and well-prepared examples.

The topics of this book The concept of a matroid has been known for more than five decades. Whitney (1935) introduced it as a common generalization of graphs and matrices. In the last two decades, it has become clear how important the concept is, for the following reasons: (1) Combinatorics (or discrete mathematics) was considered by many to be a collection of interesting, sometimes deep, but mostly unrelated ideas. However, like other branches of mathematics, combinatorics also encompasses some gen eral tools that can be learned and then applied, to various problems. Matroid theory is one of these tools. (2) Within combinatorics, the relative importance of algorithms has in creased with the spread of computers. Classical analysis did not even consider problems where "only" a finite number of cases were to be studied. Now such problems are not only considered, but their complexity is often analyzed in con siderable detail. Some questions of this type (for example, the determination of when the so called "greedy" algorithm is optimal) cannot even be answered without matroidal tools.

Book excerpt: This 2nd edition provides an in-depth, up-to-date, unified, and comprehensive treatment of the fundamentals of the theory of active networks and its applications to feedback amplifier design. The main purpose is to discuss the topics that are of fundamental importance that transcends the advent of new devices and design tools. Intended primarily as a text in circuit theory in electrical engineering for senior and/or first year graduate students, the book also serve as a reference for researchers and practicing engineers in industry.A special feature of the book is that it bridges the gap between theory and practice, with abundant examples showing how theory solves problems. These examples are actual practical problems, not idealized illustrations of the theory. The topic on topological analysis of active networks is also expanded to benefit more discerning readers.

Book excerpt: To overcome the problems of system theory and network theory over real field, this book uses matrices over the field F(z) of rational functions in multi-parameters describing coefficient matrices of systems and networks and makes systems and network description over F(z) and researches their structural properties: reducible condition of a class of matrices over F(z) and their characteristic polynomial; type-1 matrix and two basic properties; variable replacement conditions for independent parameters; structural controllability and observability of linear systems over F(z); separability, reducibility, controllability, observability and structural conditions of networks over F(z), and so on. This book involves three subjects: systems, networks and matrices over F(z), which is an achievement of interdisciplinary research.

Book excerpt: Recent technology involves large-scale physical or engineering systems consisting of thousands of interconnected elementary units. This monograph illustrates how engineering problems can be solved using the recent results of combinatorial mathematics through appropriate mathematical modeling. The structural solvability of a system of linear or nonlinear equations as well as the structural controllability of a linear time-invariant dynamical system are treated by means of graphs and matroids. Special emphasis is laid on the importance of relevant physical observations to successful mathematical modelings. The reader will become acquainted with the concepts of matroid theory and its corresponding matroid theoretical approach. This book is of interest to graduate students and researchers.

Book excerpt: In the late forties, Mathematical Programming became a scientific discipline in its own right. Since then it has experienced a tremendous growth. Beginning with economic and military applications, it is now among the most important fields of applied mathematics with extensive use in engineering, natural sciences, economics, and biological sciences. The lively activity in this area is demonstrated by the fact that as early as 1949 the first "Symposium on Mathe matical Programming" took place in Chicago. Since then mathematical programmers from all over the world have gath ered at the intfrnational symposia of the Mathematical Programming Society roughly every three years to present their recent research, to exchange ideas with their colleagues and to learn about the latest developments in their own and related fields. In 1982, the XI. International Symposium on Mathematical Programming was held at the University of Bonn, W. Germany, from August 23 to 27. It was organized by the Institut fUr Okonometrie und Operations Re search of the University of Bonn in collaboration with the Sonderforschungs bereich 21 of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft. This volume constitutes part of the outgrowth of this symposium and docu ments its scientific activities. Part I of the book contains information about the symposium, welcoming addresses, lists of committees and sponsors and a brief review about the Ful kerson Prize and the Dantzig Prize which were awarded during the opening ceremony.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a strong case for electrical network topologists and submodular function theorists being aware of each other's fields. Presenting a topological approach to electrical network theory, this book demonstrates the strong links that exist between submodular functions and electrical networks. The book contains: . a detailed discussion of graphs, matroids, vector spaces and the algebra of generalized minors, relevant to network analysis (particularly to the construction of efficient circuit simulators) . a detailed discussion of submodular function theory in its own right; topics covered include, various operations, dualization, convolution and Dilworth truncation as well as the related notions of prinicpal partition and principal lattice of partitions. In order to make the book useful to a wide audience, the material on electrical networks and that on submodular functions is presented independently of each other. The hybrid rank problem, the bridge between (topological) electrical network theory and submodular functions, is covered in the final chapter. The emphasis in the book is on low complexity algorithms, particularly based on bipartite graphs. The book is intended for self-study and is recommended to designers of VLSI algorithms. More than 300 problems, almost all of them with solutions, are included at the end of each chapter.

Book excerpt: A matroid is an abstract mathematical structure that captures combinatorial properties of matrices. This book offers a unique introduction to matroid theory, emphasizing motivations from matrix theory and applications to systems analysis. This book serves also as a comprehensive presentation of the theory and application of mixed matrices, developed primarily by the present author in the 1990's. A mixed matrix is a convenient mathematical tool for systems analysis, compatible with the physical observation that "fixed constants" and "system parameters" are to be distinguished in the description of engineering systems. This book will be extremely useful to graduate students and researchers in engineering, mathematics and computer science. From the reviews: "...The book has been prepared very carefully, contains a lot of interesting results and is highly recommended for graduate and postgraduate students." Designing these networks demands sophisticated mathematical models for their analysis. This book is the first to present a unified, comprehensive, and up-to-date treatment of net theory. It brings together elements of abstract graph theory and circuit analysis to network problems.
