Book excerpt: Special Moment Frames (SMFs) are frequently used in high seismic areas for architecturally constrained designs, as they provide lateral system stiffness without the use of braces which often obstruct views and architectural features. Reduced beam section (RBS) connections are popular SMF connection details developed following the Northridge earthquake to limit brittle fractures within connection welds. Current American Institute of Steel Construction (ASIC) provisions (i.e. AISC 341-16) provide prequalified SMF RBS connection details (including welding requirements); however, all prequalified details only consider orthogonal connections between the beam and column. This dissertation investigates the effect of adding skew within SMF RBS connections and provides insights into allowable skew levels for design, widening the application of SMF RBS connections. The study presented herein involves parametric component-level analyses and system-level dynamic time-history analyses of skewed SMF RBS connections. The component-level parametric study involves detailed finite-element analysis of 64 SMF RBS connections and 48 SMF Welded Unreinforced Flange-Welded Web (WUF-W) connections (as a typical connection alternative to the RBS). The component-level investigation considers 3 skew angles, 4 column axial load levels and 3 beam-to-column connection geometries (shallow, medium, and deep column geometries). Connection capacity, column twist/yielding, connection response and fatigue performance are all investigated. Additional component-level composite (concrete-steel) connection simulations are conducted to investigate the effects of composite concrete slabs on the behavior of the skewed connections. In addition to the component-level analyses, system-level time-history analyses are used to investigate skewed SMF RBS connection demands during dynamic seismic loading. To investigate system-level effects on skewed connection behavior, a six-story building containing various levels of skew at the SMF connection is designed, simulated using detailed finite element procedures, and loaded using a scaled earthquake ground motion to represent both design basis and maximum considered earthquake demands. In addition to the detailed finite element investigations, an experimental testing program is designed and initiated to allow prequalification of skewed SMF RBS connections within the AISC provisions. Specimen fabrication, experimental setup (including instrumentation, loading, and boundary conditions), and initial results for the prequalification testing are described herein. Results from the component-level parametric research work indicate that SMF RBS connection capacity decreases when increasing the skew angle; however, all performance levels achieved would satisfy current AISC requirements for prequalification. Additionally, as skew angle is increased within the SMF RBS connection, the resulting column twist increases. Column flange-tip yielding is also observed at beam bottom-flange levels of the skewed geometries, and this yielding does increase for skewed connections having medium and deep column geometries when increasing the skew angle; however, the yielding is rather localized on the column flange. Local damage (indication of low-cycle fatigue fracture susceptibility) within the RBS section decreases when increasing the column axial load but does increase when increasing the skew angle. When a concrete slab is included, the connection's positive moment capacity increases due to composite action, but the result is increased column twist for medium and deep column geometries at rather large skew (30° skew relative to the column). A column twist prediction formula is developed and proposed.

Special Moment frames resist lateral loads through energy dissipation of the inelastic deformation of the beam members. The 1994 Northridge earthquake proved that the standard for welded beam-column connections were not sufficient to prevent damage to the connection or failure of the connection. Through numerous studies, new methods and standards for Special Moment Frame connections are presented in the Seismic Design Manual 2nd Edition to promote energy dissipation away from the beam-column connection. A common type of SMF is the Reduce Beams Section (RBS). To encourage inelastic deformation away from the beam-column connection, the beam flange's dimensions are reduced a distance away from the beam-column connection; making the member "weaker" at that specific location dictating where the plastic hinging will occur during a seismic event. The reduction is usually taken in a semi-circular pattern. Another type of SMF connection is the Kaiser Bolted Bracket® (KBB) which consists of brackets that stiffen the beam-column connection. KBB connections are similar to RBS connections as the stiffness is higher near the connection and lower away from the connection. Instead of reducing the beam's sectional properties, KBB uses a bracket to stiffen the connection. The building used in this parametric study is a 4-story office building. This thesis reports the results of the parametric study by comparing two SMF connections: Reduced Beam Section and Kaiser Bolted Brackets. This parametric study includes results from three Seismic Design Categories; B, C, and D, and the use of two different foundation connections; fixed and pinned. The purpose of this parametric study is to compare member sizes, member forces, and story drift. The results of Seismic Design Category D are discussed in depth in this thesis, while the results of Seismic Design Category B and C are provided in the Appendices.

The selection of an appropriate seismic steel system (braced frame, moment frame, shear wall, etc.) is often influenced by architectural considerations. Moment frame configurations offer the most architectural flexibility, but are limited by code prequalification requirements that limit the use of non-orthogonal (skewed) beam-column connection geometries. A recent study has investigated laterally skewed moment frame connections, indicating that skew increases the potential for column twist and column flange yielding; however, it is unclear how realistic column axial loads will affect the skewed connection performance. This study investigates the effects of column axial loads on skewed special moment frame connections containing reduced beam sections (RBSs). Detailed finite element analyses are used for all investigations, and several beam-column connection configurations are considered, representing: 3 beam-column geometries (shallow, medium and deep columns); 4 levels of skew at the beam-to-column connection; and 4 levels of applied column axial load. Results indicate that combined beam skew, axial load, and applied connection rotations lead to local buckling issues within deep column moment frame configurations; however, increasing beam-skew and axial load has little effect on connection moment capacity prior to column local buckling initiation. Beam-skew angle is the dominate contributor to resulting column twist and increasing column axial load (up to 50% ZPn) has a negligible effect on resulting column twist. Applied column axial loads have little effect on resulting column flange yielding within the skewed beam-to-column connections.

During the 1994 Northridge Earthquake, some of these moment steel frame connections could not undergo inelastic deformation which led to many structural damages. New connection systems were proposed and tested which performed better than the pre-Northridge moment frame connections. Reduced beam section (RBS) connection is one of the most widely used connections after the Northridge Earthquake. Instead of increasing the steel at beam-column, the RBS connection rather removed steel from the flange of the beam. This connection thus gives the designer the option of deciding where the yield will occur in the frame. This research studies the three different parameters used in describing the location and configuration of the radius cut reduced beam section by employing finite element modeling. Variations in ductility, strength and elastic displacement were observed as these parameters were changed. Reducing the flange thus helped with ductility but affected the lateral load carrying capacity and stiffness of the frame.

Book excerpt: The predicted seismic performance of 4-story, 8-story, 12-story, and 20-story office buildings with special steel moment frames (SMFs) using Simpson Strong-Tie Strong Frame® moment connections is presented in this thesis. Conventional buildings with SMFs in seismic regions use welded fully-restrained beam-to-column connections and dissipate energy primarily through beam damage in a reduced beam section (RBS). In contrast, Strong Frame beam-to-column connections are bolted, partially-restrained, and dissipate energy by concentrating damage in replaceable links that act as fuse elements. The predicted seismic performance of buildings with Strong Frame connections was compared to the performance of a set of SMF buildings using RBS connections. Static pushover results showed that buildings with Strong Frame connections exhibit slightly higher static overstrength compared to buildings with RBS connections, for all building heights, except for the 20-story RBS building designed using the Equivalent Lateral Force (ELF) procedure. Buildings with Strong Frame connections passed without difficulty the collapse safety requirements specified in FEMA P-695, Quantification of building seismic performance factors, and they also met the collapse safety objective defined in ASCE 7-16, Minimum design loads and associated criteria for buildings and other structures, of no more than a 10% probability of collapse when subjected to risk-adjusted Maximum Considered Earthquake (MCE[subscript]R) level ground accelerations. Additional analyses were conducted using the FEMA P-58, Seismic performance assessment of buildings methodology. These seismic performance analyses indicated that buildings with Strong Frame connections had up to 40% lower repair costs, up to 50% shorter repair time, and a lower probability of being non-functional (“red-tagged”), compared to buildings with RBS connections. Furthermore, Strong Frame Buildings were expected to have up to 50% less residual (permanent) story drift when subjected to MCER level ground accelerations. Therefore, for buildings that are similar to those considered in this research, the seismic performance of buildings with Strong Frame connections is predicted to be superior to the seismic performance of buildings with RBS connections.

Among the various new design suggestions, the Reduced Beam Section (RBS) connection has been one of the most efficient and reliable option for high ductility demands. The purpose of this research was to study the behavior of concrete slabs in the performance of steel moment frames with reduced beam sections based on ductility, strength and stiffness. The slab is an integral part of a building. It is always wiser to consider the slab in order to assess accurately the seismic behavior of a building under the earthquake loading. In this research, two sets of finite element models were analyzed. Each set had one bare steel moment frame and one concrete slab frame which acted as a composite section. The connections were designed using the AISC Seismic Design manual (AISC 2012). The finite element modeling was done using NISA DISPLAY-IV (NISA 2010). All the models, with and without the slab were analyzed under the same boundary conditions and loads. Both non-linear and linear analyses were performed. The results from non-linear analysis were used to compare the ductility and strength whereas linear analysis results were used to compare the stiffness between bare steel and composite frame models.

Moment-resisting frames are one common type of lateral load-resisting systems that have been used in steel buildings for almost 5 decades. After the 1994 Northridge earthquake, the reduced beam section (RBS) connection was introduced and widely recognized as one of the prequalified beam-to-column connections for use in a structural steel special moment-resisting frame. In this study, W14 and W24 column sections were used in the moment-resisting frame designs with the RBS connection to further compare their seismic performances. Moreover, the deflection amplification factors, Cd = 5.5 and Cd = 8, were also utilized in the designs of the special SMF. Briefly, a total of 12 special SMF structures were developed, and were divided into 3 groups: 5-story, 10-story, and 15-story. Each group contained 4 structures, such that two designs of W14 and W24 columns where Cd equaled 5.5 and another two designs of the same column depths where Cd equaled 8. The nonlinear analyses, nonlinear static and nonlinear dynamic analysis, were later implemented to assess the collapse performance of these 12 archetypes. The nonlinear static analysis was used to determine system overstrength and ductility, and the nonlinear dynamic analysis was performed to obtain median collapse intensity and collapse margin ratio of archetypes. Finally, an appropriate Cd factor was determined according to the height of archetype, and the comparison of seismic performances of W24 and W14 column sections was evaluated.

Book excerpt: Previous earthquakes have revealed seismic performance issues associated with fully-restrained (FR) welded beam-to-column connections in steel moment frames. Past research has indicated that bolted partially-restrained (PR) connections can serve as viable alternatives for beam-to-column connections to resist lateral loads. This paper addresses the seismic behavior of special moment frames (SMFs) incorporating PR connections. A series of archetypical buildings are modeled in OpenSees using varying levels of stiffness, strength, and strain hardening in the PR beam-to-column connections. Incremental dynamic analyses (IDAs) are performed on the PR archetypes and the results are compared to a typical building archetype constructed with conventional FR connections. The models are subjected to incrementally larger time histories until the frames fail. Maximum interstory drifts, maximum total roof drifts and maximum base shears are recorded for each model throughout the analyses. The PR archetypes are designed and constructed to engage all of the frames in each principal direction to act as the seismic force resisting system (SFRS) whereas the FR archetype is constructed to engage only the perimeter frames as the SFRS. The PR archetypes are modelled to represent a global building stiffness equivalent to the global building stiffness of the conventional FR archetype. The PR connections are modeled with trilinear moment-rotation characteristics using rotational springs. The advantages of using PR frames include smaller member sizes and increased redundancy in the SFRS compared to conventional FR framing. Since most PR connections are of the bolted type, they generally cost less and are easier to assemble. The results of this study reveal that buildings constructed with PR connections that meet or exceed minimal levels of stiffness and strength have very similar seismic performance compared to buildings constructed with FR connections. The recommendation is made to accept PR connections for prequalification in SMFs.

The Deflection Amplification Factor of Steel Moment Resisting Frames Using Reduced Beam Section Connections

Book excerpt: The deflection amplification factor, C d, is a very important part of designing the story drifts of a structure. By multiplying the elastic deflection of a structure by the C d coefficient, one will get the expected plastic deflection for the design seismic forces. According to IBC, special steel momentframes have a C d value of 5.5 for all frames; independent of what type of connection is being used. Therefore the C d values will most likely not be the same for all connections. The objective of this research is to determine the deflection amplification factor for steel moment resisting frames using reduced beam section connections. FEMA 350 shows that for a reduced beam section, the minimum span-to-depth ratio should be 5 for an ordinary, and 7 for a special moment frame. The data collected in this study will be used to compare these values to see if they agree with FEMA 350.
