Book excerpt: Seldom does a physical system, particularly one as apparently simple as the flow of a Newtonian fluid between concentric rotating cylinders, retain the interest of scientists, applied mathematicians and engineers for very long. Yet, as this volume goes to press it has been nearly 70 years since G. I. Taylor's outstanding experimental and theoretical study of the linear stability of this flow was published, and a century since the first experiments were performed on rotating cylinder viscometers. Since then, the study of this system has progressed enormously, but new features of the flow patterns are still being uncovered. Interesting variations on the basic system abound. Connections with open flows are being made. More complex fluids are used in some experiments. The vigor of the research going on in this particular example of nonequilibrium systems was very apparent at the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on "Ordered and Turbulent Patterns in Taylor Couette Flow," held in Columbus, Ohio, USA May 22-24, 1991. A primary goal of this ARW was to bring together those interested in pattern formation in the classic Taylor Couette problem with those looking at variations on the basic system and with those interested in related systems, in order to better define the interesting areas for the future, the open questions, and the features common (and not common) to closed and open systems. This volume contains many of the contributions presented during the workshop.

Book Synopsis Natural Laminar Flow and Laminar Flow Control by : R.W. Barnwell

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research on laminar flow and its transition to turbulent flow has been an important part of fluid dynamics research during the last sixty years. Since transition impacts, in some way, every aspect of aircraft performance, this emphasis is not only understandable but should continue well into the future. The delay of transition through the use of a favorable pressure gradient by proper body shaping (natural laminar flow) or the use of a small amount of suction (laminar flow control) was recognized even in the early 1930s and rapidly became the foundation of much of the laminar flow research in the U.S. and abroad. As one would expect, there have been many approaches, both theoretical and experimental, employed to achieve the substantial progress made to date. Boundary layer stability theories have been formu lated and calibrated by a good deal of wind tunnel and flight experiments. New laminar now airfoils and wings have been designed and many have been employed in aircraft designs. While the early research was, of necessity, concerned with the design of subsonic aircraft interest has steadily moved to higher speeds including those appropriate to planetary entry. Clearly, there have been substantial advances in our understanding of transition physics and in the development and application of transition prediction methodolo gies to the design of aircraft.
Book Synopsis Elements of Transitional Boundary-Layer Flowlements by : Robert Edward Mayle
Download or read book Elements of Transitional Boundary-Layer Flowlements written by Robert Edward Mayle and published by Logos Verlag Berlin GmbH. This book was released on 2018 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Second Enhanced Edition Suitable for advanced-level courses or an independent study in fluid mechanics, this text by an expert in the field provides the basic aspects of laminar-to-turbulent flow transition in boundary layers. Logically organized into three major parts, the book covers pre- and post-transitional flow, transitional flow, and several advanced topics in periodically disturbed transitional flow. Some of the subjects covered within the book include high-frequency unsteady laminar flow, turbulent flow, natural transition, bypass transition, turbulent spot theory, turbulent spot kinematics and production, correlations for the onset and rate of transition, global and conditional averaging, transitional flow models, wakeinduced transition, multimode transition, and separated-flow transition. Containing some 202 figures (all drawn by the author), 28 tables, 12 appendices, a supplement on tensors, and an extensive bibliography, the 415 page book provides a wealth of data and information about the subject.
Book Synopsis Turbulence and Transition Modelling by : M. Hallbäck
Download or read book Turbulence and Transition Modelling written by M. Hallbäck and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this book is to give, within a single volume, an introduction to the fields of turbulence modelling and transition-to-turbulence prediction, and to provide the physical background for today's modelling approaches in these problem areas as well as giving a flavour of advanced use of prediction methods. Turbulence modelling approaches, ranging from single-point models based on the eddy-viscosity concept and the Reynolds stress transport equations (Chapters 3,4,5), to large-eddy simulation (LES) techniques (Ch. 7), are covered. The foundations of hydrodynamical stability and transition are presented (Ch. 2) along with transition prediction methods based on single-point closures (Ch. 6), LES techniques (Ch. 7) and the parabolized stability equations (Ch. 8). The book addresses engineers and researchers, in industry or academia, who are entering into the fields of turbulence or transition modelling research or need to apply turbulence or transition prediction methods in their work.

Book Synopsis Physics of Rotating Fluids by : Christoph Egbers
Download or read book Physics of Rotating Fluids written by Christoph Egbers and published by Springer. This book was released on 2008-01-11 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is devoted to recent developments in the field of rotating fluids, in particular the study of Taylor--Couette flow, spherical Couette flow, planar Couette flow, as well as rotating annulus flow. Besides a comprehensive overview of the current state of the art, possible future directions in this research field are investigated. The first part of this volume presents several new results in the classical Taylor--Couette system covering diverse theoretical, experimental and numerical work on bifurcation theory, influence of boundary conditions, counter-rotating flows, spiral vortices and many others. The second part focuses on spherical Couette flows, including isothermal flows, thermal convective motion, as well as magnetohydrodynamics in spherical shells. The remaining parts are devoted to Goertler vortices, rotating annulus flows, as well as superfluid Couette flows. The present book will be of interest to all researchers and graduate students working actively in the field.
