Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Russian Front Early every line in this book has been written to the accompaniment of guns and under conditions that made writing very difficult. There are many things I would have liked to write, but which I am not permitted to tell at present. I have had to refrain from men tioning certain places, names of certain important men, and certain dates. I have also had to curb a desire to criticize. Several of my letters to friends in England are included here. Written, as they were, immediately after the events they describe, they show, I think, my emotions as no ordinary chapters could. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Russian Campaign: April to August, 1915, Being the Second Volume of "Field Notes, From the Russian Front" Many of my friends have urged me not to publish this, the second volume of Field Notes from the Russian Front, on the ground that the fortunes of Russia and the Russian armies were on the wane, and that the optimism which I have always felt has proved itself unfounded by the events of the past few months. It is for the very reason that conditions in Russia are momentarily unfavourable that I am glad to publish this book at this time, as a vindication of my faith and belief in the common soldiers and officers of an army with which I have been associated for nearly a year. During the advances and successes in Galicia and Poland a year ago I found the Russian troops admirable, and now in the hour of their reverses and disappointments they are superb. I retract nothing that I have said before, and resting my faith in the justice of the cause, the unflinching character of the people, and the matchless courage of the Russian soldiers, I am glad in this moment of depression to have the chance to vindicate my own belief in their ultimate victory in the East. The Russians for more than a year have laboured under innumerable difficulties. Without munitions, and handicapped in a hundred ways, they have held themselves intact before the relentless drives of the most efficient army in the world. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Russian Offensive: Being the Third Volume of "Field Notes From the Russian Front," Embracing the Period From June 5th to Sept; 1st, 1916 As I wrote a year ago, victory was won potentially when the character of the Russian people was crystallized, no matter whether the actual fighting continues one year longer or five. For in wars, even as in private life, it is character, given only time to adjust itself to circumstances, that wins. Guns wear out, ammunition is shot away, and all material as sets disappear, but character is the one enduring value without which neither man nor nation can permanently prosper. The retreat from Warsaw, with the subsequent check to the German invasion a year ago, marked the turning of the tide, for it was the Russian capacity to accept defeat with out loss of morale or confidence in ultimate victory that has made possible the renaissance of the army this year. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Russia and the Great War The success obtained with the British public by my work on Modern Russia, of which the second edition followed the first in the space of ten months, has inspired me with courage once more to address my readers in a book devoted to my country. The subject of this new book is Russia and the Great War. But in writing it I wished not merely to write a book for the moment ex elusively, of value only for today, and of no interest to-morrow. It is net the external and dramatic aspect of the great war waged by Russia and her Allies that interests me the most. On the contrary, my readers will find in my pages neither descriptions of battles nor tragic or picturesque narratives of the incidents of battle. My aim has been something quite different from this. I wish to inform my English readers con cerning the principal phenomena of Russian life before the War, and to explain the relations be tween these phenomena and the war itself. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recent Experiences and Impressions in Russia Russia has called to the colors since the war began not less than men. This constitutes the largest army assembled by any one nation in the history of the world. Of this vast number it is estimated that fully have already been killed or have died as the result of wounds or diseases occasioned by the war. Another are today prisoners of war in Germany, austria-hungary, Bulgaria, and Turkey. Another may. Be classified as permanently ineffective, chiefly those who have been seriously mutilated in warfare or shattered by disease. This leaves men as comprising the total strength of the Rus sian army of today. Some authorities whom I consulted give a somewhat lower figure, but more would place it even higher. Of this army of today probably are to be found in the seventy corps on the European front and the five on the Asiatic front; in the depots or reserves; in connection with garrisons and communications-athus leaving a little over in training, on leave or otherwise not immediately avail able for military operations, but potentially a most important asset. On this vast host of Russian men and boys rests the tre mendons responsibility of maintaining and pressing the war on the long drawn out eastern front. The effectiveness and faith fulness with which they perform this critical duty will determine, far more largely than we in America have realized, the extent of the exertions and sacrifices, and the laying down of life and substance, of the American people in connection with the great struggle. Whatever can be done, therefore to ensure and develop the highest working efficiency and truly triumphant spirit of the Russian soldiers has a most direct, practical, and vital bearing on the destiny of America and the other Allies. As a member ofthe Special Diplomatic Mission to Russia which had been charged by President Wilson with the responsibility of studying ways in which America and Russia might best cooperate in the war, I gave not a little attention, in accordance with the wish of our Chairman, Mr. Root, to the consideration of this large and press ing problem. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Surgeon Grow: An American in the Russian Fighting A great yellow cloud rose in the air, sw'eeping towards us rapidly. I thought of artillery limbers coming back for more shells, but the volume of that cloud was too great. As it rolled nearer we made out a great straggling disorganized mob of soldiers, running for their lives, apparently. Many were without hats or coats and some had thrown their rifles away. They were a panic-stricken mob bent only on putting as much space between themselves and the Germans as possible. Their grimy faces were streaked with sweat, their eyes glared wildly like the eyes of a stampeding herd of steers, as they bore down upon us. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This classic WWII history presents a comprehensive yet vividly detailed account of the Third Reich’s epic and bitter clash with the Red Army. The opening onslaughts of Operation Barbarossa began on June 22nd, 1941, as German forces stormed into the Soviet Union. Few of them were to survive the five long years of bitter struggle. A posting to the Eastern Front during the Second World War was rightly regarded with dread by the German soldiers. They faced the unremitting hostility of the climate, the people and even, at times, their own leadership. There were epic conflicts, such as the battles of Stalingrad and Kursk. But surrounding these famous events was a daily war of attrition which ultimately ground Hitler’s war machine to a halt. In this classic account, military historian James Lucas examines the Eastern Front from trench warfare to a bicycle-mounted antitank unit fighting against the oncoming Russian hordes. Told through the experiences of the German soldiers who endured these nightmarish years of warfare, War on the Eastern Front is a unique record of this cataclysmic campaign.

Book excerpt: OSTFRONT 1944: The German Defensive Battles on the Russian Front in 1944 Alex Buchner. In 1944, when the entire Russo-German front was "ablaze" under continual Soviet attacks, wrong estimations by the highest German command led to critical decisions with grave consequences. The Red Army was growing increasingly stronger, and launched a major offensive. They engaged the Germans in a series of battles - Cherkassy, Tarnopol, Crimea, Vetebsk, Brody, Jassy - That ended in the collapse of Army Group Center, and catastrophic German losses. These battles cost the German army in the east well over a half-million casualties. The entire story is set forth in this new book by Alex Buchner. This in-depth study uses presently available sources and the reports of still-living participants, to document the events on the Eastern Front of 1944. It tells the story from the German point of view, reflecting on what is considered the most barbarous fighting of World War II. Alex Buchner is the author of several World War II studies, including The German Infantry Handbook 1939-1945, available from Schiffer Military History.

Murder, perhaps, said Shep. They're advertising the finish of 'war Correspondents, ' old style. Maybe the reporter is harder to kill. He is apt to care little for messing with generals, or to pose as a tactician. He knows that one comes closer to the realities of war by mingling afoot with peasantry and troopers, than when convoyed by staff Officers and allowed to see only what they permit, to learn what they want him to know. He smiles at the pretensions of War Corre spondents, who ape military dress, soldiers' ways of conduct, and collect decorations. He wonders over the hullabaloo about making dodos of them.
