Book excerpt: A comparative study has been made of the transient fatigue crack growth rate behavior following tensile overloads at low (near-threshold) and high stress intensity ranges in an ?/?-type titanium alloy IMI 550, with specific emphasis of the role of crack closure mechanisms. After tensile overloads, fatigue cracks in both coarse-grained ?-annealed and fine-grained ?/? microstructures were observed initially to accelerate, followed by significant retardation, before growth rates returned to their baseline levels. The initial acceleration was attributed to an immediate reduction in near-tip closure, as indicated by metallographic sectioning, and a slight decrease in far-field closure, as measured by back-face compliance methods. Subsequent retardation was not associated with marked changes in far-field closure, although there were indications on compliance curves of a second "closure point" at a higher load, suggesting an approximate 50% increase in near-tip closure. Load interaction effects were found to be most severe where specific mechanisms of crack closure were prominant. Thus, the maximum post-overload retardations were seen in the coarse-grained ? microstructure, and when baseline stress intensity ranges were close to the threshold ?KTH, or when the maximum overload stress intensities approached the fracture toughness.

It begins with the initiation of cracks, and with continued cyclic loading the cracks propagate, finally leading to the rupture of a component or specimen. The demarcation between the above stages is not well-defined. Depending upon the scale of interest, the variation may span three orders of magnitude. For example, to a material scientist an initiated crack may be of the order of a micron, whereas for an engineer it can be of the order of a millimetre. It is not surprising therefore to see that investigation of the fatigue process has followed different paths depending upon the scale of phenomenon under investigation. Interest in the study of fatigue failure increased with the advent of industrial ization. Because of the urgent need to design against fatigue failure, early investiga tors focused on prototype testing and proposed failure criteria similar to design formulae. Thus, a methodology developed whereby the fatigue theories were proposed based on experimental observations, albeit at times with limited scope. This type of phenomenological approach progressed rapidly during the past four decades as closed-loop testing machines became available.

Book excerpt: This book focuses on the mechanisms and underlying mechanics of failure in various classes of materials such as metallic, ceramic, polymeric, composite and bio-material. Topics include tensile and compressive fracture, crack initiation and growth, fatigue and creep rupture in metallic materials, matrix cracking and delamination and environmental degradation in polymeric composites, failure of bio-materials such as prosthetic heart valves and prosthetic hip joints, failure of ceramics and ceramic matrix composites, failure of metallic matrix composites, static and dynamic buckling failure, dynamic excitations and creep buckling failure in structural systems. Chapters are devoted to failure mechanisms that are characteristic of each of the materials. The work also provides the basic elements of fracture mechanics and studies in detail several niche topics such as the effects of toughness gradients, variable amplitude loading effects in fatigue, small fatigue cracks, and creep induced brittleness. Furthermore, the book reviews a large number of experimental results on these failure mechanisms. The book will benefit structural and materials engineers and researchers seeking a “birds-eye” view of possible failure mechanisms in structures along with the associated failure and structural mechanics.

Book excerpt: An Introduction to Fatigue in Metals and Composites provides a balanced treatment of the phenomenon of fatigue in metals, nonmetals and composites with polymeric, metallic and ceramic matrices. The applicability of the safe life philosophy of design is examined for each of the materials. Attention is also focused on the stable crack growth phase of fatigue and differences in the operative mechanisms for the various classes of materials are considered. The impacts of these differences on the development of damage tolerance strategies are examined. Among topics discussed are; variable amplitude loading with tensile and compressive overload; closure obstruction; bridging mechanisms; mixed mode states; small cracks; delamination mechanisms and environmental conditions. The arrangement and presentation of the topics are such that An Introduction to Fatigue in Metals and Composites can serve as a course text for mechanical, civil, aeronautical and astronautical engineering and material science courses as well as a reference for engineers who are concerned with fatigue testing and aircraft, automobile and engine design.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fatigue is a mechanism of failure which involves the formation and growth of cracks under the action of repeated stresses. Ultimately, a crack may propagate to such an extent that total fracture of the member may occur. To avoid fatigue it is essential to design the structure with inherent fatigue strength. However, fatigue strength for variable amplitude loading is not a constant material property and any calculations are necessarily built on a number of assumptions. Cumulative damage of welded joints explores the wealth of research in this important field and its implications for the design and manufacture of welded components. After an Introduction, chapter two introduces the constant amplitude database, which contains results obtained in test conditions and which forms the basis of the basic S-N curves for various types of joint. Chapter three discusses the influence of residual stresses which can have a marked effect on fatigue behaviour. Chapter four explores variable amplitude loading and the problem of how information from laboratory tests, obtained under constant amplitude conditions, can be applied to the design of structures for service conditions. This problem is further investigated in the next chapter which is devoted to two and three level load testing. Chapters six, seven and eight look at the influence that the variety of variable loading spectra can have on fatigue strength, whether narrow or wide band loading or cycles of small stress range. Taking all of this knowledge, chapter nine discusses structure designs.Cumulative damage of welded joints is a comprehensive source of invaluable information for welding engineers, supervisors, inspection personnel and designers. It will also be of great interest for academics working in the fields of structural and mechanical engineering. Covers the wealth of research in the field of fatigue strength and its role in the design and manufacture of welded components Invaluable reference source for welding engineers, supervisors, inspection personnel and designers

Berge and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fatigue crack growth behavior of Ti-62222 in sheet form was investigated at three temperatures under various load histories with a specific emphasis on crack opening measurements and mechanisms. Constant-amplitude R = 0.1 near-threshold results showed that based upon applied ?K, fatigue crack growth rates were lower at the two temperature extremes in comparison with those at room temperature. Based upon ?Keff, a moderate temperature effect was observed. The various shifts in the ?Keff curves were a result of different controlling crack closure mechanisms at each temperature. Single tensile overloads at 2.5 x Kmax produced a delay in fatigue crack growth and was most significant at -54°C. Remote crack opening measurements showed no appreciable change during the delay period due to the small region along the crack front that experienced crack closure. Near crack tip opening measured for various combinations of overloads, underloads, and constant ?K at 25°C revealed a general trend for higher near tip opening following a tensile overload. However, a sufficient number of measurements were inconsistent and thus only minimal confidence could be placed with the method. Scanning electron microscopy was used to evaluate surface fatigue crack growth profiles and fatigue crack growth fracture surface morphology.
