Book excerpt: Part of an overall study of phenomena that affect the performance of optical or infrared reconnaissance and guidance equipment, the present work shows that the most commonly used expression for the mutual coherence function for an optical wave propagating in a turbulent atmosphere is, in general, incorrect. This expression is based on an unphysical extrapolation of the Kolomogorov spectrum. In modifying the spectrum, however, the corrections to the coherence function, the implied resolution, spreading of a finite beam, and the signal-to-noise ratio using heterodyne detection, can be considerable. Approximate expressions for the coherence function, valid over three distinct propagation distance regimes, are derived. The field is shown to have a greater transverse coherence length than that predicted by other researchers, the difference being more pronounced at shorter ranges. Thus, under many conditions, the performance degradation of devices that depend on the above properties is less than previously reported. (Author).

Book excerpt: The present work shows that the most commonly used expression for the mutual coherence function (MCF) for an optical wave propagating in a turbulent atmosphere is, in general, incorrect. This expression is based on an unphysical extrapolation of the Kolmogorov spectrum. Along an atmospheric path, with specified turbulence parameters, the new MCF is shown to imply greater resolution, less beam spreading, and greater heterodyne signal-to-noise ratios than indicated by previous calculations. By comparing these results with those previously obtained for heterodyne detection, the percentage errors in the previous calculations are shown to increase with decreasing propagation paths. In particular, where it was formerly thought that the atmosphere limited the effective coherent detection size in heterodyne detection at all ranges, the present calculation reveals that over sufficiently short paths, there is no size limit imposed by the atmosphere. Book excerpt: Using transport theory the mutual coherence function of a beam propagating in a turbulent medium has been studied in detail, including the effect of the beam size, focal length and strength of the turbulence. The most detailed results are obtained for the MCF when the fluctuations have a Gaussian spectrum, but simple closed-form asymptotic results have also been obtained when the spectrum is a von Karman. Book excerpt: Starting from the parabolic equation for a wave propagating in a random medium, the equation for the general mutual coherence function is derived, and a solution is obtained for the same using a perturbation technique, assuming the Kolmogorov spectrum for the fluctuations of the refractive index. It is shown that the solution so obtained is exact when the coherence function is evaluated at a single point and at the same time, but at two different frequencies. Using this exact solution for the two frequency correlation function, the propagation characteristics of a plane wave Gaussian and rectangular pulses are studied at mm and optical wavelengths. Book excerpt: When we were first approached by Dr. Lucky to write this book we were very enthusiastic about the prospect, since we had contemplated a similar project for quite some time. The difficulty lay in how best to digest the vast amount of data on optical propagation, reduce it to a book of manageable size, and simultaneously form the transition from the physics of propagation to the engineering of optical channels. This is the intent of Optical Channels. In accomplishing our goal it was necessary to condense the material on optical propagation and, in so doing, we have left a large amount to be handled via references. We have tried to make these decisions in a consistent manner so that the book will be uniform in its treatment of this topic. We identify four channels for consideration: the free-space channel, which: is characteristic of a tranquil atmosphere or a space-to-space link; the turbulent channel, which is characteristic of the atmospheric channel; the scatter channel in two forms, clouds and water; and the fiber optic channel. For each of these channels we have tried to reduce the applicable propagation theory to a level that can be used for engineering design. This has been done by example, but here again decisions had to be made on which examples to present. We have not tried to present any material on optical components and consequently other references on engineering would be necessary to supplement this book.

Book excerpt: The mutual coherence function of a laser beam propagating in turbulence with a modified von Karman spectrum for the index of refraction fluctuations, including a parametric study of the effect on the MCF of varying beam size, focal length, and the properties of the turbulence was computed. The results are valid over all propagation distances, unlike calculations employing the method of smooth perturbations. Also studied was the effect of a constant wind on the frequency spectrum of signal. It was found that over most practical path lengths the spectral width is delta omega = 4.1V ((k sub o)sup 6/5)(z sup 3/5)((C sub n, sub 2)sup 3/5), where V is the wind speed, k sub o is the signal wavenumber, C sub n sup 2 is the strength of turbulence, and z is the path length in the turbulence. Book excerpt: The pertinent theoretical background and the results of a group of experiments conducted over 0.4- and 1.17-km near-ground horizontal ranges are presented. (1) The log-amplitude variances for HeNe (0.633 μm) and CO2 (10.6 μm) laser beams were found to have a ratio of 26.8, which is in close agreement with the predictions of Rytov-based spherical-wave theory. (2) Published measurements of the saturation level of the log-amplitude variance are reviewed and several inconsistencies noted. (3) The spatial correlation function of irradiance field was measured and found to agree with theory. The degree of correlation between different frequency beams which had traversed the same optical path was also measured and compared to theory. The data exhibited an unacceptably large scatter and did not show the wavelength dependence. (4) The log-normal, Rayleigh, and Rice probability distributions are discussed in terms of their applicability to irradiance statistics. Relatively weak 10.6 μm irradiance fluctuations were found to be equally well described by the log-normal and Rice distributions; strong fluctuations obtained at 0.488 μm were clearly best described by the log-normal distribution.

Book excerpt: Transport methods have been employed to study the propagation of a narrow-angle electromagnetic beam through a turbulent medium. Results are presented for the mean-square angular divergence of the beam, cross section of the beam, and the power received by a planar aperture in the medium. The problem of back-scattered radiation is also considered and results are obtained which reduce, in the limit of zero true absorption, to previous results. (Author).

Book excerpt: These proceedings contain lectures, research papers and working group reports from the NATO Advanced Study Institute on "Surveillance of environmental pollution and resources by electromagnetic waves", held at Spatind, Norway, April 9-19, 1978. Remote sensing of the environment has developed into a very complex multidisciplinary field. It encompasses a huge range of different instrumental techniques and analytical methods, designed to provide information about a vast number of environmental parameters. Nevertheless, the approach to solve specific problems and the ways of handling the collected information are to a large extent the same or similar. This commonality is the basis for the Advanced Study Institute. To provide the best possible background, both tutoria11y and for a fruitful exchange of research ideas and results, a number of outstanding scientists were invited to review some major fields. The material presented in these proceedings is certainly not complete in the sense that it covers all aspects of the subject. The selection is deliberately due to the program committee and the editor. The program committee would like to express their gratitude to Dr. Ti10 Kester, head of the NATO Advanced Study Institute Program, NATO Scientific Affairs Division, for his support and encouragement during the organization of the Institute. Oslo, June 1978.
