Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Modern Treatment of Some Diseases of the Skin The paper from which the part on eczema is now reprinted, was read before the medico-chirurgical Society almost (outyears ago;1 indeed I authorised the late Mr. Davies to announce a reprint of it in his forthcoming list of books, but the great demand made upon my time by writing another work The Stream of Life which I have but very recently completed, entirely prevented me from giving it that care which I thought absolutely required by the nature and importance of the subject. I am sorry this delay should have occurred, as Mr. Davies more than once informed me that several members of the profession had applied for copies; but I can only express my regret, as I still consider it better that it should not have appeared than have come before the world in an imperfect form. When read before the Medico Chirurgical Society, it was too condensed to bear reprinting except as a pamphlet. The parasitic nature of some diseases of the skin could not be ignored in a work devoted to treatment. Some supporters of the vegetable theory contend that in certain of these affec tions there is no necessity for general treatment of an active kind, often for no general treatment at all, and that a speedy and lasting cure can be effected by local means alone; whereas when these means are neglected, or made merely auxiliary to constitutional measures, progress must ever be slow and success uncertain. On the other hand, such eminent writers as Wilson, Carpenter, and Erichsen, deny the vegetable nature of these diseases; Wilson even considering local remedies as of secondary importance, and, when not conjoined with means calculated to improve the health, as too often powerless. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Common Diseases of the Skin: With Notes of Diagnosis and Treatment The object of this small volume is to provide illustrations and a Short description of some of the commoner diseases of the Skin, with a few lines on differential diagnosis and methods of treatment. NO one appreciates better than the author that dermatology can only be properly taught from clinical material, but this is not always within reach of the student and illustra tions can in a measure replace it. The book is not intended to take the place of the larger works on dermatology, but the necessarily comprehensive nature of such works makes them at times a source of confusion to the student, whose lack of knowledge renders it difficult for him to identify one disease among the descriptions of a number of somewhat similar, but perhaps rare, ones. Graduates of the Faculty of Medicine of mcgill University will recognize that - the views enunciated closely follow the teaching of the former Professor Of Dermatology, Dr. Francis J. Shepherd, whose almost uncanny astuteness in diagnosis and simple methods of treatment the writer had the advantage of following for twenty years as his assistant in the Montreal General Hospital clinic. In choosing the diseases which Should be included in a work of this scope, the writer has based his selection on the statistics of the hospital clinic with which he is connected, thereby, possibly, admitting some not properly classed as common, because of the large proportion of aliens in his clientele. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Illustrated Skin Diseases: An Atlas and Text-Book With Special Reference to Modern Diagnosis and the Approved Methods of Treatment The pictures, both plate and text, have been selected with the view of exhibit ing, as far as possible, the ordinary phases of skin disease as met with in practice. Most of them are from photographs of his own patients made by the author. Those that are not are credited to the physicians from whom they came. A few are taken from foreign sources. The anatomical illustrations are from photomicrographs. In this second edition the section on Cosmetics of the Skin and Hair has been entirely rewritten and very greatly enlarged for the author believes that it is the neglect of this field which has permitted it to fall to so large an extent into im proper and non-medical hands. The number of prescriptions has been considerably increased; and the various changes which the improvement of our knowledge of the nature, pathology, and treatment of certain dermatoses render necessary have been made. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Treatment of Skin Cancers N the following pages I have endeavored to give a succinct account of the cancerous process as it affects the external integument of the body. The modern theories of its nature, causation, and' pathology have been briefly dwelled upon; but os pecial stress has been laid upon the two points which are after all the only essential ones for us, its recogni tion and treatment. Whilst none Of the important therapeutic measures that are emmoyed are neglected, I have elaborated more especially the caustic method, which is the one that experience has commended to me. It is my hope that what I have written may do something towards taking this most eligible method Of treating cutaneous carcinomata out of the hands Of unauthorized practitioners, and placing it where it belongs, at the disposal Of the profession at large. How far I may have succeeded cannot be known until those not very familiar with dermatological practice have put them into active use. It is sincerely hoped that they may find many of the suggestions given to be of practical value. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On Some Diseases of the Skin: Which Are Produced by Derangements of the Nervous System Were the nature of nervous affections of the skin and its appendages more clearly understood, we should undoubtedly find less difficulty in applying to them methods of treatment more decisive, and more certainly curative. Modern investigation, indeed, has conclusively proved that a large proportion of skin diseases is due to an exalted or depressed condition of the nerves which govern circulation, secretion, and nutri tion; and at the present time it is admitted, that defective treatment is often due to a want of knowledge of the important part played by the nutritive nerves, in these almost universal and troublesome complaints.
