Book excerpt: For the case of very supersonic leading edges, the inviscid hypersonic flow over the windward side of a symmetrical flat-plate delta wing at incidence is analyzed. The limit selected is that the incidence is of higher order than the aspect ratio as the incidence tends to zero at infinite Mach number. In this framework, the flow regions consist of a two-dimensional domain adjacent to the leading edges and a central conefield. The flow quantities in the central region represent small linear, rotational perturbations about the zero sweep flow. A Riemann-Poincare boundary value problem for the pressure perturbation is formulated. An additional condition involving the sidewash at the shock is found to be required to resolve the indeterminacy of the foregoing boundary value problem. Series solutions and numerical results are presented for the shock shape and the pressure. The behavior of the latter quantity is found to be similar to that given by the irrotational linear solution for the supersonic leading edge case. Finally, the relationship between the present application and others involving diffraction problems and corner flows is indicated.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The flow of a perfect gas over the slab portion of a blunted delta wing flying at hypersonic speeds is studied. A set of approximate equations is derived and a solution - for an inviscid flow - is obtained. Using this solution as a representation for the inviscid flow problem, a formulation to the laminar boundary-layer equations is presented; one which is applicable to the flow field's azimuthal planes where the crossflow gradients are not too large. Numerical solutions to these boundary-layer equations have been obtained; however, these are restricted to the azimuthal planes and near to the leading edges. The results indicate the presence of a dividing surface streamline since a numerical solution could not be obtained near the centerplane of the wing, where the crossflow velocity is large. (Author).

Book excerpt: This entry describes the experimental work conducted in the Department of Aeronautics at Imperial College in connection with Test Problems 1 and 2 of the "Workshop on Hypersonic Flows for Reentry Problems, Part I". These are defined as follows: Test Problem 1 Flow Over a Slender Cone Test Problem 2 Turbulent Base Flow The main requirement of this text is to present the experimental data for direct comparison with the predictions of CFD codes. We have therefore concentrated mainly on a factual statement of measuring techniques and results, together with an assessment of experimental accuracy. Future publications will be devoted to more extensive physical interpretations and discussions of the results. We have produced a large volume of data, some of which were categorised as "MANDATORY" and some as "OPTIONAL" for the purposes of CFD validation. However, only the "MANDATORY" data are presented here, although the other data are available and will be published separately later. 2. EXPERIMENTAL ARRANGEMENT 2. 1 The Test Facility The experiments were conducted in the Imperial College No. 2 Gun tunnel. This facility is a conventional intermittent blowdown tunnel with a contoured Mach 9 (nominal) axisymmetric nozzle fed by a free piston compression heater. The operating condition under which the data contained in this report were obtained is presented in Table 1. Test 2 T (oK) M b. This book was released on 2008-02-06 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book in English devoted to the latest developments in fluid mechanics and aerodynamics. Written by the leading authors in the field, based at the renowned Central Aerohydrodynamic Institute in Moscow, it deals with viscous gas flow problems that arise from supersonic flows. These complex problems are central to the work of researchers and engineers dealing with new aircraft and turbomachinery development (jet engines, compressors and other turbine equipment). The book presents the latest asymptotical models, simplified Navier-Stokes equations and viscous-inviscid interaction theroies and will be of critical interest to researchers, engineers, academics and advanced graduate students in the areas of fluid mechanics, compressible flows, aerodynamics and aircraft design, applied mathematics and computational fluid dynamics. The first book in English to cover the latest methodology for incopressible flow analysis of high speed aerodynamics, an essential topic for those working on new generation aircraft and turbomachinery Authors are internationally recognised as the leading figures in the field Includes a chapter introducing asymptotical methods to enable advanced level students to use the book
