This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph deals with the expansion properties, in the complex domain, of sets of polynomials which are defined by generating relations. It thus represents a synthesis of two branches of analysis which have been developing almost independently. On the one hand there has grown up a body of results dealing with the more or less formal prop erties of sets of polynomials which possess simple generating relations. Much of this material is summarized in the Bateman compendia (ERDELYI [1J, vol. III, chap. 19) and in TRUESDELL [1J. On the other hand, a problem of fundamental interest in classical analysis is to study the representability of an analytic function j(z) as a series 2::CnPn(z), where {Pn} is a prescribed sequence of functions, and the connections between the function j and the coefficients en. BIEBERBACH'S mono graph Analytisehe Fortsetzung (Ergebnisse der Mathematik, new series, no. 3) can be regarded as a study of this problem for the special choice Pn (z) = zn, and illustrates the depth and detail which such a specializa tion allows. However, the wealth of available information about other sets of polynomials has seldom been put to work in this connection (the application of generating relations to expansion of functions is not even mentioned in the Bateman compendia). Book excerpt: This book introduces the concept of Pólya property for holomorphic functions of two and several variables. The functions which have the Pólya property are used to study the uniqueness problem for entire functions. This gives interesting results for a general class of generating functions. The functions with Pólya property are also used as generating kernels in formal generating relations to study the expansion problem for entire functions. A necessary and sufficient condition is obtained for an entire function to have a unique expansion in a series of various known polynomials generated from the formal generating relations. In this book, it is shown that the uniqueness problem for entire functions of exponential type is equivalent to the approximation problem for analytic functions. This result, in combination with other results, produces many interesting theorems on the approximation of analytic functions. Since functions with Pólya property have very useful applications, the study of a class of linear operators which preserve the Pólya property is embarked upon and two sufficient conditions for an operator to be Pólya-property-preserving are given.

Book excerpt: Inequalities for polynomials and their derivatives are very important in many areas of mathematics, as well as in other computational and applied sciences; in particular they play a fundamental role in approximation theory. Here, not only Extremal Problems and Inequalities of Markov-Bernstein Type for Algebraic Polynomials, but also ones for trigonometric polynomials and related functions, are treated in an integrated and comprehensive style in different metrics, both on general classes of polynomials and on important restrictive classes of polynomials. Primarily for graduate and PhD students, this book is useful for any researchers exploring problems which require derivative estimates. It is particularly useful for those studying inverse problems in approximation theory. Applies Markov-Bernstein-type inequalities to any problem where derivative estimates are necessary Presents complex math in a clean and simple way, progressing readers from polynomials into rational functions, and entire functions of exponential type Contains exhaustive references with more than five hundred citations to articles and books Features methods to solve inverse problems across approximation theory Includes open problems for further research

Book excerpt: A companion volume to the text "Complex Variables: An Introduction" by the same authors, this book further develops the theory, continuing to emphasize the role that the Cauchy-Riemann equation plays in modern complex analysis. Topics considered include: Boundary values of holomorphic functions in the sense of distributions; interpolation problems and ideal theory in algebras of entire functions with growth conditions; exponential polynomials; the G transform and the unifying role it plays in complex analysis and transcendental number theory; summation methods; and the theorem of L. Schwarz concerning the solutions of a homogeneous convolution equation on the real line and its applications in harmonic function theory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theory of holomorphic dynamical systems is a subject of increasing interest in mathematics, both for its challenging problems and for its connections with other branches of pure and applied mathematics. A holomorphic dynamical system is the datum of a complex variety and a holomorphic object (such as a self-map or a vector ?eld) acting on it. The study of a holomorphic dynamical system consists in describing the asymptotic behavior of the system, associating it with some invariant objects (easy to compute) which describe the dynamics and classify the possible holomorphic dynamical systems supported by a given manifold. The behavior of a holomorphic dynamical system is pretty much related to the geometry of the ambient manifold (for instance, - perbolic manifolds do no admit chaotic behavior, while projective manifolds have a variety of different chaotic pictures). The techniques used to tackle such pr- lems are of variouskinds: complexanalysis, methodsof real analysis, pluripotential theory, algebraic geometry, differential geometry, topology. To cover all the possible points of view of the subject in a unique occasion has become almost impossible, and the CIME session in Cetraro on Holomorphic Dynamical Systems was not an exception.

Book excerpt: Whilst improperly posed problems appear in several branches of applied and pure mathematics, this conference concentrated mainly on the practical treatment of ill posedness. The participants came from 12 countries. The interchange of ideas reflected the spectrum of questions arising in connection with the subject of the conference, where currently progresses in research are made. This volume contains 17 papers presented at the con ference. Focal points in the programme were: Problems of regularisation, parameter identification, free boundary and inverse problems in differential equations and inte gral equations of the first kind. Problems, which appear in science, in technical fields and in medicine are dis cussed as well as general operator equations. In a jOint discussion, several open problems have been worked out which are collected at the end of the volume. The editor's thanks go to all contributors and parti cipants who made the conference a success; to the manage ment of the institute with its unique atmosphere; to the Birkhauser Verlag for the possibility to publish the vo lume in the well-known ISNM series; to Dr. P. Jochum (Mlin chen) for assistance in organization and to Mrs. Chr. Rogg (Augsburg) for her excellent typing of several manuscripts.

Book excerpt: This book presents new computational tools for the H? control of distributed parameter systems in which transfer functions are considered as input-output descriptions for the plants to be controlled. The emphasis is on the computation of the controller parameters and reliable implementation. The authors present recent studies showing that the simplified skew-Toeplitz method is applicable to a wide class of systems, supply detailed examples from systems with time delays and various engineering applications, and discuss reliable implementation of the controller, complemented by a software based on MATLAB. Frequency Domain Techniques for H? Control of Distributed Parameter Systems is intended for advanced undergraduate and early graduate students interested in robust control of distributed parameter systems?time delay systems?as well as researchers and engineers working in related fields. It can be used in the following courses: Introduction to Robust Control with Applications to Distributed Parameter Systems and Introduction to Robust Control with Applications to Time Delay Systems.
