Download or read book Bäcklund and Darboux Transformations written by C. Rogers and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2002-06-24 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the deep and fascinating connections that exist between a ubiquitous class of physically important waves known as solitons and the theory of transformations of a privileged class of surfaces as they were studied by eminent geometers of the nineteenth century. Thus, nonlinear equations governing soliton propagation and also mathematical descriptions of their remarkable interaction properties are shown to arise naturally out of the classical differential geometry of surfaces and what are termed Bäcklund-Darboux transformations. This text, the first of its kind, is written in a straightforward manner and is punctuated by exercises to test the understanding of the reader. It is suitable for use in higher undergraduate or graduate level courses directed at applied mathematicians or mathematical physics.

Book Synopsis Diatom Morphogenesis by : Joseph Seckbach
Download or read book Diatom Morphogenesis written by Joseph Seckbach and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2021-10-26 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: DIATOM MORPHOGENESIS A unique book presenting the range of silica structures formed by diatoms, theories and hypotheses of how they are made, and applications to nanotechnology by use or imitation of diatom morphogenesis. There are up to 200,000 species of diatoms, each species of these algal cells bearing an ornate, amorphous silica glass shell. The silica is structured at 7 orders of magnitude size range and is thus the most complex multiscalar solid structure known. Recent research is beginning to unravel how a single cell marshals chemical, physical, biochemical, genetic, and cytoskeletal processes to produce these single-cell marvels. The field of diatom nanotechnology is advancing as this understanding matures. Diatoms have been actively studied over the recent 10-20 years with various modern equipment, experimental and computer simulation approaches, including molecular biology, fluorescence-based methods, electron, confocal, and AFM microscopy. This has resulted in a huge amount of information but the key stages of their silica morphogenesis are still not clear. This is the time to reconsider and consolidate the work performed so far and to understand how we can go ahead. The main objective of this book is to describe the actual situation in the science of diatom morphogenesis, to specify the most important unresolved questions, and to present the corresponding hypotheses. The following areas are discussed: A tutorial chapter, with a glossary for newcomers to the field, who are often from outside of biology, let alone phycology; Diatom Morphogenesis: general issues, including symmetry and size issues; Diatom Morphogenesis: simulation, including analytical and numerical methods for description of the diatom valve shape and pore structure; Diatom Morphogenesis: physiology, biochemistry, and applications, including the relationship between taxonomy and physiology, biosilicification hypotheses, and ideas about applications of diatoms. Audience Researchers, scientists, and graduate students in the fields of phycology, general biology, marine sciences, the chemistry of silica, materials science, and ecology.

Book Synopsis Introduction to Differential Geometry of Space Curves and Surfaces by : Taha Sochi
Download or read book Introduction to Differential Geometry of Space Curves and Surfaces written by Taha Sochi and published by Taha Sochi. This book was released on 2022-09-14 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about differential geometry of space curves and surfaces. The formulation and presentation are largely based on a tensor calculus approach. It can be used as part of a course on tensor calculus as well as a textbook or a reference for an intermediate-level course on differential geometry of curves and surfaces. The book is furnished with an index, extensive sets of exercises and many cross references, which are hyperlinked for the ebook users, to facilitate linking related concepts and sections. The book also contains a considerable number of 2D and 3D graphic illustrations to help the readers and users to visualize the ideas and understand the abstract concepts. We also provided an introductory chapter where the main concepts and techniques needed to understand the offered materials of differential geometry are outlined to make the book fairly self-contained and reduce the need for external references.

Book Synopsis SIDE III -- Symmetries and Integrability of Difference Equations by : D. Levi
Download or read book SIDE III -- Symmetries and Integrability of Difference Equations written by D. Levi and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2000 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the third meeting on "Symmetries and Integrability of Difference Equations" (SIDE III). The collection includes original results not published elsewhere and articles that give a rigorous but concise overview of their subject, and provides a complete description of the state of the art. Research in the field of difference equations-often referred to more generally as discrete systems-has undergone impressive development in recent years. In this collection the reader finds the most important new developments in a number of areas, including: Lie-type symmetries of differential-difference and difference-difference equations, integrability of fully discrete systems such as cellular automata, the connection between integrability and discrete geometry, the isomonodromy approach to discrete spectral problems and related discrete Painlevé equations, difference and q-difference equations and orthogonal polynomials, difference equations and quantum groups, and integrability and chaos in discrete-time dynamical systems. The proceedings will be valuable to mathematicians and theoretical physicists interested in the mathematical aspects and/or in the physical applications of discrete nonlinear dynamics, with special emphasis on the systems that can be integrated by analytic methods or at least admit special explicit solutions. The research in this volume will also be of interest to engineers working in discrete dynamics as well as to theoretical biologists and economists.

Book Synopsis Lobachevsky Geometry and Modern Nonlinear Problems by : Andrey Popov
Download or read book Lobachevsky Geometry and Modern Nonlinear Problems written by Andrey Popov and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-08-06 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph presents the basic concepts of hyperbolic Lobachevsky geometry and their possible applications to modern nonlinear applied problems in mathematics and physics, summarizing the findings of roughly the last hundred years. The central sections cover the classical building blocks of hyperbolic Lobachevsky geometry, pseudo spherical surfaces theory, net geometrical investigative techniques of nonlinear differential equations in partial derivatives, and their applications to the analysis of the physical models. As the sine-Gordon equation appears to have profound “geometrical roots” and numerous applications to modern nonlinear problems, it is treated as a universal “object” of investigation, connecting many of the problems discussed. The aim of this book is to form a general geometrical view on the different problems of modern mathematics, physics and natural science in general in the context of non-Euclidean hyperbolic geometry.
