Such systems can be described as a second order Petrovskii parabolic system and a first order hyperbolic system coupled together by terms with first order spatial derivatives. The dependent variables are then of either parabolic or hyperbolic type. Examples are the equations for couple sound and heat flow and the viscous shallow water equations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present monograph is devoted to the theory of general parabolic boundary value problems. The vastness of this theory forced us to take difficult decisions in selecting the results to be presented and in determining the degree of detail needed to describe their proofs. In the first chapter we define the basic notions at the origin of the theory of parabolic boundary value problems and give various examples of illustrative and descriptive character. The main part of the monograph (Chapters II to V) is devoted to a the detailed and systematic exposition of the L -theory of parabolic 2 boundary value problems with smooth coefficients in Hilbert spaces of smooth functions and distributions of arbitrary finite order and with some natural appli cations of the theory. Wishing to make the monograph more informative, we included in Chapter VI a survey of results in the theory of the Cauchy problem and boundary value problems in the traditional spaces of smooth functions. We give no proofs; rather, we attempt to compare different results and techniques. Special attention is paid to a detailed analysis of examples illustrating and complementing the results for mulated. The chapter is written in such a way that the reader interested only in the results of the classical theory of the Cauchy problem and boundary value problems may concentrate on it alone, skipping the previous chapters.

Book excerpt: Initial-Boundary Value Problems and the Navier-Stokes Equations gives an introduction to the vast subject of initial and initial-boundary value problems for PDEs. Applications to parabolic and hyperbolic systems are emphasized in this text. The Navier-Stokes equations for compressible and incompressible flows are taken as an example to illustrate the results. The subjects addressed in the book, such as the well-posedness of initial-boundary value problems, are of frequent interest when PDEs are used in modeling or when they are solved numerically. The book explains the principles of these subjects. The reader will learn what well-posedness or ill-posedness means and how it can be demonstrated for concrete problems. Audience: when the book was written, the main intent was to write a text on initial-boundary value problems that was accessible to a rather wide audience. Functional analytical prerequisites were kept to a minimum or were developed in the book. Boundary conditions are analyzed without first proving trace theorems, and similar simplifications have been used throughout. This book continues to be useful to researchers and graduate students in applied mathematics and engineering.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals mainly with linear and nonlinear parabolic equations and systems of second order. It first transforms the real forms of parabolic equations and systems into complex forms, and then discusses several initial boundary value problems and Cauchy problems for quasilinear and nonlinear parabolic complex equations of second order with smooth coefficients or measurable coefficients. Parabolic complex equations are discussed in the nonlinear case and the boundary conditions usually include the initial irregular oblique derivative. The boundary value problems are considered in multiply connected domains and several methods are used.

Book excerpt: An extension is given of the method to obtain pointwise bounds for the solutions of the first initial-boundary value problem for a semilinear parabolic equation. A method is given for obtaining interior pointwise bounds for solutions of the second initial-boundary value problem. The bounds obtained are in terms of L(2) integrals of the initial-boundary data; thus close bounds may be obtained, in the linear case, by applying the Rayleigh-Ritz Technique. The approximating functions used in the procedure need not satisfy either the differential equation or the initial-boundary data but only certain regularity conditions. (Author).

Book excerpt: This monograph is devoted to the global existence, uniqueness and asymptotic behaviour of smooth solutions to both initial value problems and initial boundary value problems for nonlinear parabolic equations and hyperbolic parabolic coupled systems. Most of the material is based on recent research carried out by the author and his collaborators. The book can be divided into two parts. In the first part, the results on decay of solutions to nonlinear parabolic equations and hyperbolic parabolic coupled systems are obtained, and a chapter is devoted to the global existence of small smooth solutions to fully nonlinear parabolic equations and quasilinear hyperbolic parabolic coupled systems. Applications of the results to nonlinear thermoelasticity and fluid dynamics are also shown. Some nonlinear parabolic equations and coupled systems arising from the study of phase transitions are investigated in the second part of the book. The global existence, uniqueness and asymptotic behaviour of smooth solutions with arbitrary initial data are obtained. The final chapter is further devoted to related topics: multiplicity of equilibria and the existence of a global attractor, inertial manifold and inertial set. A knowledge of partial differential equations and Sobolev spaces is assumed. As an aid to the reader, the related concepts and results are collected and the relevant references given in the first chapter. The work will be of interest to researchers and graduate students in pure and applied mathematics, mathematical physics and applied sciences.

Fundamental and recent developments are presented on the inequalities of Abel, Agarwal, Beckenbach, Bessel, Cauchy–Hadamard, Chebychev, Markov, Euler’s constant, Grothendieck, Hilbert, Hardy, Carleman, Landau–Kolmogorov, Carlson, Bernstein–Mordell, Gronwall, Wirtinger, as well as inequalities of functions with their integrals and derivatives. Each inequality is discussed with proven results, examples and various applications. Graduate students and advanced research scientists in mathematical analysis will find this reference essential to their understanding of differential and integral inequalities. Engineers, economists, and physicists will find the highly applicable inequalities practical and useful to their research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the qualitative theory of ordinary differential equations, the Liapunov method plays a fundamental role. To use their analogs for the analysis of stability of solutions to parabolic, hyperparabolic, and other nonclassical equations and systems, time-invariant a priori estimates have to be devised for solutions. In this publication only parabolic problems are considered. Here lie, mainly, the problems which have been investigated most thoroughly --- the construction of Liapunov functionals which naturally generalize Liapunov functions for nonlinear parabolic equations of the second order with one spatial variable. The authors establish stabilizing solutions theorems, and the necessary and sufficient conditions of general and asymptotic stability of stationary solutions, including the so-called critical case. Attraction domains for stable solutions of mixed problems for these equations are described. Furthermore, estimates for the number of stationary solutions are obtained.

It rewrites the problems as abstract Cauchy problems or evolution equations, and then solves them by the technique of elementary difference equations. Because of this, the volume assumes less background and provides an easy approach for readers to understand.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The parabolic partial differential equations model one of the most important processes in the real-world: diffusion. Whether it is the diffusion of energy in space-time, the diffusion of species in ecology, the diffusion of chemicals in biochemical processes, or the diffusion of information in social networks, diffusion processes are ubiquitous and crucial in the physical and natural world as well as our everyday lives. This book is self-contained and covers key topics such as the Lp theory and Schauder theory, maximum principle, comparison principle, regularity and uniform estimates, initial-boundary value problems of semilinear parabolic scalar equations and weakly coupled parabolic systems, the upper and lower solutions method, monotone properties and long-time behaviours of solutions, convergence of solutions and stability of equilibrium solutions, global solutions and finite time blowup. It also touches on periodic boundary value problems, free boundary problems, and semigroup theory. The book covers major theories and methods of the field, including topics that are useful but hard to find elsewhere. This book is based on tried and tested teaching materials used at the Harbin Institute of Technology over the past ten years. Special care was taken to make the book suitable for classroom teaching as well as for self-study among graduate students. About the Author: Mingxin Wang is Professor of Mathematics at Harbin Institute of Technology, China. He has published ten monographs and textbooks and 260 papers. He is also a supervisor of 30 PhD students.
