Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Evolution of the Proboscidea The accuracy of the hypothesis of an Ethiopian centre of' distribution of the Probosehlea has been fully demonstrated during the last two years by the discovery of a number of primitive members of the suh-order in the Middle and Upper Eocene beds of the F ayum district of Egypt, Where they occur associated With remains of other mammals, especially of early Hyracoidea, as well as of some remarkable reptiles. The great interest of this discovery Will be recognised When it is considered that in the paper by Professor osborn, above referred to, Africa is spoken of as the dark continent of palaeontology, for it has practically no fossil mammal history. The material for at least the beginning of such a history is now available, and it is to be hoped and expected that within the next few years much will be added to it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Evolution of Living Organisms The variety of living things is so great, the manifesta tions of life so diverse and wonderful, that it may seem at first sight impossible to explain them all as the result of the continuous and uniform action of certain funda mental natural causes. Yet this is the ambition of the scientific student of nature. But, before attempting to describe the process of evolution, and estimate the im portance of the several factors which have contributed to bring about the development of life, let us see what science can teach concerning the physical and chemical properties of living organisms. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Evolution, Vol. 2: April 1929 According to popular standards of civilized peoples, men of one's own race and tongue were called men, warriors, heroes, but people of other races were barbarians, unholy ones, foreign devils. The founder of one's own clan was often considered to be the son of a deity, while the barbarians were the descendants of monkeys or other wild animals. Or the first man was created perfect, in the image of God. One's own family, of course, was fairly true to type but sin had played havoc with the features of other races. To believe all this was comforting to one's own face in a world where the inferiority complex occasionally haunted 'even kings. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Evolution, From a Scientific Standpoint Evolution tells us that the world at one time was a ball of burning matter, sputtering and sparkling like the white, hot iron from the blacksmith's forge, flung at random from some greater body, possibly the sun, into limitless space to wander where it listeth. After wander ing about for a few millions of years, it gets into a certain beaten path, which it has since ever faithfully followed, and now it begins to cool down. This cooling process has gone (and is still going) until at the present time we have a crust on the surface Of this fire ball estimated at feet. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Evolution: A General Sketch From Nebula to Man The dimensions of this little Work will sufficiently prepare the reader to appreciate its scope. It gives no more than the broad outlines of the evolution of the earth and its inhabitants. From the great volume which a score of sciences have co-operated in writing on that absorbing subject it selects only the pages that are most interesting and intelligible to the general reader. These pages it joins into a continuous story, which opens with the mighty cloud of matter that was stirred into giving birth to our sun and its planets, and ends with some attempt to forecast their fate in millions of years to come. In so brief an account of so long a story only slight reference can be made to the controversies that divide modern students of evolution in regard to the agencies at work. The aim is chiefly to present a panoramic view of the development of the world - especially the world that lies close about os-by a conscientious use of the results of many sciences, and aided by a personal acquaintance during many years with both telescope and microscope. But disputed points will be left open, conjecture plainly stated as conjecture, and the latest theories of importance indicated; so that the reader may be at least slightly informed on the systems Weismannism, Mendelism, etc. - that now occur in all he may read further on the subject. A vague, Often an incorrect conception Of its meaning in the field of biology and with reference to the origin of Man, has reached the popular mind, and stirred it to further investigation and inquiry. Even in its biological aspects, the doctrine of Evolution is seen to touch the great problems of religion and philosophy of origin and destiny. But it is beginning to be understood that not alone as an explana tion of the method whereby living forms have been produced and developed is this doctrine alive with human interest and pregnant with important influences upon human thought and human wel fare. Evolution, reaching backward, takes hold upon the great cosmic problems of the birth and growth of worlds, the nature of Matter and Spirit, the relation Of the phenomenal Universe to its efficient Cause. Reaching forward, it touches and illuminates the pressing problems of ethics and sociology, Offering to the careful student wise instruction for his guidance in all the practical affairs Of life. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Coming of Evolution: The Story of a Great Revolution in Science It is not, as sometimes suggested, the striking out of new ideas which is of the greatest importance in the history of science, but rather the accumulation of observations and experiments, the reasonings based upon these, and the writings in which facts and reasonings are presented to the world - by which a merely suggestive hypothesis becomes a vivifying theory - that really count in making history. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Evolution of the Vertebrates and Their Kin It is many years since a sustained attempt has been made to unite the various branches of the animal kingdom into a natural, coherent system, or genealogical tree, that would indicate the rise and decline of the important functions and organs, map out the highways of organic evolution, and assign in geological terms the approximate dates and surroundings for the critical events in structural in novation and readjustment that have marked its progress. The most important problem involved in such an undertaking is to discover which one, if any, of the many existing invertebrate phyla forms the trunk line of descent from the lowest vertebrates to the coelenterates, and through them to the protozoa. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Investigation of Evolution in Chrysomelid Beetles of the Genus Leptinotarsa, Vol. 5 The investigations, the results of which are herein set forth, have been carried out by aid from the Elizabeth Thompson Science Fund, in the collection of the data of distribution and migration of L. decemlineata and in some of the earlier experimental work upon the same species, and by certain grants from the University of Chicago and from the Carnegie Institution of Washington, which have made possible experimental study in the tropics. I desire to express my deep sense of obligation to all these for the aid rendered. The investigations have been conducted in the Museum of Comparative Zoology in Cambridge, in the Biological Laboratory of the Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Science, at Cold Spring Harbor, and in the Hull Zoological Laboratory of the University of Chicago; and to the directors of these institutions and their staffs I am under great obligation for much kindly advice and valuable criticisms. The experimental studies presented in this contribution, with the exception of three small experiments, were brought to an end in July, 1904. Through the carelessness of workmen engaged to attend to the heating plant of the university, on the hottest day of the season steam was turned on in full force in the greenhouse where my experiments were, terminating at once the series of experiments and cultures which had been carried with great labor and expense through several years. These cultures have been started again and are now being continued at Chicago and in the tropics of southern Mexico. The writer has hoped to depict also, in some measure, the dignity of life's upward struggle, however humble the incarnation.
