Book Synopsis Estimating Economic Capacity by : Richard E. Gift
Download or read book Estimating Economic Capacity written by Richard E. Gift and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2021-12-14 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Noting the variety of methods by which the concept of economic capacity is measured and the different ways that the concept is defined, Richard E. Gift seeks here to develop a conceptual framework within which a meaningful interpretation of these many definitions and measures of productive capacity can be made. Gift's method is to show the common structure that is shared by all capacity concepts and arguments. This structure consists of a list of variables that must always be considered when assessing the economic capacity of productive equipment. He then shows that the problems which arise in comparing capacities for different dates can be expressed in the form of a few simple generalizations. His third step is to illustrate specific problems. Finally, he sets out to develop a test for the logical completeness of any argument about capacity.

Book Synopsis The Theory of Monopoly Capitalism by : John Bellamy Foster
Download or read book The Theory of Monopoly Capitalism written by John Bellamy Foster and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2014-04 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Absent any "epoch making innovations" like the automobile or vast new increases in military spending, the result was a general trend toward economic stagnation--a condition that persists, and is increasingly apparent, to this day. Their analysis was also extended to issues of imperialism, or "accumulation on a world scale," overlapping with the path-breaking work of Samir Amin in particular. John Bellamy Foster is a leading exponent of this theoretical perspective today, continuing in the tradition of Baran and Sweezy's Monopoly Capital. This new edition of his essential work, The Theory of Monopoly Capitalism, is a clear and accessible explication of this outlook, brought up to the present, and incorporating an analysis of recently discovered "lost" chapters from Monopoly Capital and correspondence between Baran and Sweezy.

Book Synopsis Capacity Realization and Productivity Growth in a Developing Country by : Ruhul A. Salim
Download or read book Capacity Realization and Productivity Growth in a Developing Country written by Ruhul A. Salim and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-14 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1999. Firms in manufacturing industries are influenced by the market-oriented liberalization reform policies in many developing countries since the late eighties. However, studies applying appropriate methodology to appropriate data seldom analyze the impact of reforms on the performance of production units such as manufacturing firms. The central point of this book is to address this issue by comparing firms’ achievement with 'best practice' performance before and after reforms. This form of analysis is not new but it emphasizes a new focus or realignment of thinking within neoclassical economics to develop an analytical framework. This book examines the productivity growth of Bangladesh manufacturing firms as component measures of changes in capacity realization and technical progress. The significant feature of this approach is that it allows for the inefficiency of firms, and thus productivity growth is estimated rather than taking it as a residual as is usually measured in the traditional growth accounting approach. High rates of technological progress, on the one hand, can co-exist with low rates of capacity realization. On the other hand, relatively low rates of technological progress can co-exist with an improving capacity realization. As a result specific policy actions are required to address the difference in the sources of variation in productivity. In this respect this book would provide invaluable insights for policy makers, development practitioners, academics and students of economics.
Book Synopsis Measuring the Efficiency of Resource Use in Indian Manufacturing Industries in Pre and Post-Reform Periods by : Meenu Saihjpal
Download or read book Measuring the Efficiency of Resource Use in Indian Manufacturing Industries in Pre and Post-Reform Periods written by Meenu Saihjpal and published by Anchor Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2016-03-09 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Economists have come to believe that using resources efficiently can lead to differences in the growth rates of economies. Efficient use of resources is known to improve the standard of living of the people thereby increasing their welfare. However, initially ‘capital’ and later on ‘labour’ attracted the attention of the economists. The need for the efficient use of resources was only recognized as an important determinant in the growth of economies in the fifties. Economists believe that the developing countries in particular need to concentrate on improving the efficiency of their use of resources, since these economies have an increasing number of people to feed and proportionally little resources at their disposal. Whenever there is talk of efficiency regarding the use of resources it means that all the resources that are used in the process of production should be used efficiently. These resources are: capital, labour, raw materials, power, fuel and the skills of the entrepreneur. Efficiency is reflected in the unit or average cost of production and in the quality of goods. Before the introduction of the reforms, the Indian industrial sector was characterized by numerous controls, which restricted internal as well as external competition. However, after the reforms such controls were loosened and it is now simply expected that the Indian industrial sector uses its resources efficiently. The present study examines whether there have been significant reductions in the components of the average variable cost in the post-reform period as compared to the pre-reform period. Furthermore, it analyses whether there has been any noticeable increase in advertising expenditure of the firms in the post-reform period.
