Book excerpt: Excerpt from Panama Canal Zone The logical outcome was a revolution, which was begun by the patriots of Pan ama, and when, during the course of the uprising the Colombians threatened to massacre the Americans in Colon, the captain of the gunboat U. S. S. Nashville landed 42 sailors and marines, who speed ily restored order. The revolution having succeeded, the United States, through President Roose velt and Congress, recognized the new Republic, and a treaty was negotiated by Secretary Hay in 1903 by which our country paid to Panama, and in return was given the perpetual right to construct and maintain a canal across the Isthmus. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Panama Canal Zone: An Epochal Event in Sanitation Before doing this, however, I wish to forestall an obvious, though natural criticism. Ten days, it must be admitted, are a very insufficient space of time in which to make a study of so considerable and complicated an enterprise as this Panama Canal, -an enterprise with so many different aspects; much less would any observation possible to be made in that time, by one both a layman in engineering and a novice in tropical conditions, suffice for the drawing of inferences of value, or such as would be entitled to consideration. This is altogether undeniable; and yet, for reasons which will presently appear, I propose not only to tell what I saw and repeat what I was told, but to draw inferences therefrom; always, of course, subject to correction by those better informed. And I feel moved SO to do by a conviction that what I have to say is at least not matter of general knowledge; and, further, that what was altogether novel to me cannot be wholly familiar to others. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Who Built the Panama Canal? As preparations are going rapidly forward for a world-wide celebration of the opening of the Panama Canal, at the exact time determined nearly ten years ago under the Second lsthmian Commission, whose administration constituted what has come to be known as the railroad régime at Panama, in fancy I see many scores of men scattered over the forty-eight States and other scores still in the Canal Zone, who helped to make the work of that régime notable in the history of human achievement, scanning with perplexity the books that have been written about the new waterway and the articles con cerning it in the public prints. Is it a fact or is it a dream, in imagination I hear them say, that it was the railroad men of the United States Who created a modern state in that ten. Book Synopsis Alaska and the Panama Canal (Classic Reprint) by : William D. Boyce
Download or read book Alaska and the Panama Canal (Classic Reprint) written by William D. Boyce and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-23 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Alaska and the Panama Canal For Alaska we paid Russia for the Panama Canal Zone we paid the Panama Republic These were bargain prices, the sums paid being insignificant as com pared to the value of the lands, the one being small, but as important as any piece of ground of equal size upon the globe, the other magnificent in area and containing wealth many times greater in amount than the price we paid for it. For years Alaska has been a particularly interesting country to me, but after miles of travel in this vast Northern Territory of ours, I was more than ever impressed with its great resources, and the further fact that our governmental policy was crippling and restricting its proper and natural development. I fully believe that Alaska should be made into a colonial possession and not remain a Territory. I also believe that our Government should not engage in railway construction in Alaska, where failure can be the only result. It has seemed to me that not only was Alaska in itself worth writing about, but that political obstructions that have been placed in the path of its progress ought to be removed. My reasons, I believe, will be found good and sufficient by readers of the chapters on Alaska that follow. Download or read book The Panama Canal written by C. Reginald Enock and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-11 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Panama Canal: Its Past, Present, and Future The Isthmus of Panama has been well described as a barrier between two oceans which has, nevertheless, failed to serve as a bridge between two continents. So rugged and overgrown with tropical jungle, and so subject to malarious and other disorders is this isthmus, that, despite its fame and its beauties in certain respects, this natural pathway between North and South America has been neglected as a means of transit, in a longitudinal direction, from the one to the other; and it still remains - away from the immediate influence of the canal works almost as wild as when traversed by Balboa. The same may be said concerning great portions of South America, which remain unaltered since first aroused by the tramp of the European horseman. No railway or road traverses the isthmus connecting the two continents The Panama Railroad crossed it transversely; an isolated link of communication in the interrupted navigation between the Pacific and the Atlantic. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Canal Zone Pilot: Guide to the Republic of Panama and Classified Business Directory In submitting this, the first edition of the Pilot and Guide, the publisher does so, with the firm belief that it will meet with the approbation of its readers. He has departed somewhat from the beaten path of this class 1 of books for the express purpose of meeting an insistent public demand, that of a work that will enable people ln terested in Panama and the Isthmian Canal to gain a clear and adequate conception of what has occurred, and is now taking place. Books have been published. And some of them very good ones, on various phases of Isthmian his tory and events, but the publisher has tried and believes that he has succeeded in massing more meat of the Isth mian cocoanut, than has ever before been printed between the covers of a book whose'title page bears the well known name of Panama.
