Book excerpt: Excerpt from On Some Tests of Homogeneity of Variances In their paper Ansari and Bradley discussed a two-sample rank test for dispersions and suggested the desirability of extending their results to the problem of several samples. In this paper, besides generalizing their results, we provide a few additional non - parametric tests, which include, among others, the multi - sample analogues of the two - sample normal scores test of dispersion and the tests considered by Mood Klotz [a], and Siegel and Tukey The asymptotic distributions of the proposed test statistics are derived by an application of the author's theorem The asymptotic efficiencies of these tests relative to one another and the 51 test pp. 83 - 87) are computed in the. Book excerpt: The articles in this volume present the state of the art in a variety of areas of discrete probability, including random walks on finite and infinite graphs, random trees, renewal sequences, Stein's method for normal approximation and Kohonen-type self-organizing maps. This volume also focuses on discrete probability and its connections with the theory of algorithms. Classical topics in discrete mathematics are represented as are expositions that condense and make readable some recent work on Markov chains, potential theory and the second moment method. This volume is suitable for mathematicians and students.

Rao would be found in almost any statistician's list of five outstanding workers in the world of Mathematical Statistics today. His book represents a comprehensive account of the main body of results that comprise modern statistical theory." -W. G. Cochran "[C. R. Rao is] one of the pioneers who laid the foundations of statistics which grew from ad hoc origins into a firmly grounded mathematical science." -B. Efrom Translated into six major languages of the world, C. R. Rao's Linear Statistical Inference and Its Applications is one of the foremost works in statistical inference in the literature. Incorporating the important developments in the subject that have taken place in the last three decades, this paperback reprint of his classic work on statistical inference remains highly applicable to statistical analysis. Presenting the theory and techniques of statistical inference in a logically integrated and practical form, it covers: * The algebra of vectors and matrices * Probability theory, tools, and techniques * Continuous probability models * The theory of least squares and the analysis of variance * Criteria and methods of estimation * Large sample theory and methods * The theory of statistical inference * Multivariate normal distribution Written for the student and professional with a basic knowledge of statistics, this practical paperback edition gives this industry standard new life as a key resource for practicing statisticians and statisticians-in-training.

Book excerpt: For testing the equality of c continuous probability distributions on the basis of c independent random samples, various non-parametric tests for dispersions are offered. These tests, include among others, the multi-sample analogues of the two-sample normal-scores test of dispersion and the tests considered by Ansari and Bradley, Klotz, Mood, and Siegel and Tukey. Under suitable regularity conditions, it is shown that these tests have limiting non-central chi-square distributions with c-1 d.f. The asymptotic relative efficiencies (in the Pitman sense) of these tests relative to one another and the F test, are obtained and are shown to be the same as for the two-sample problem. (Author).

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Asymptotic Efficiency of a Class of C-Sample Tests The H test of Kruskal and Wallis is a direct generaliza tion of the two-sample Wilcoxon test discussed in detail by Mann and whitney and its limiting distribution has been derived by Kruskal [13] under the null hypothesis and by Andrews [1] under an alternative hypothesis. These results are generalized by those of the present paper concerning the limiting distribu tion of the f test. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The advent of the high-speed computer with its enormous storage capabilities enabled statisticians as well as researchers from the different topics of life sciences to apply mul tivariate statistical procedures to large data sets to explore their structures. More and more, methods of graphical representation and data analysis are used for investigations. These methods belong to a topic of growing popUlarity, known as "exploratory data analysis" or EDA. In many applications, there is reason to believe that a set of objects can be clus tered into subgroups that differ in meaningful ways. Extensive data sets, for example, are stored in clinical cancer registers. In large data sets like these, nobody would ex pect the objects to be homogeneous. The most commonly used terms for the class of procedures that seek to separate the component data into groups are "cluster analysis" or "numerical taxonomy". The origins of cluster analysis can be found in biology and anthropology at the beginning of the century. The first systematic investigations in cluster analysis are those of K. Pearson in 1894. The search for classifications or ty pologies of objects or persons, however, is indigenous not only to biology but to a wide variety of disciplines. Thus, in recent years, a growing interest in classification and related areas has taken place. Today, we see applications of cluster analysis not only to. biology but also to such diverse areas as psychology, regional analysis, marketing research, chemistry, archaeology and medicine.

Book excerpt: The aim of this Special Issue of Mathematics is to commemorate the outstanding Russian mathematician Vladimir Zolotarev, whose 90th birthday will be celebrated on February 27th, 2021. The present Special Issue contains a collection of new papers by participants in sessions of the International Seminar on Stability Problems for Stochastic Models founded by Zolotarev. Along with research in probability distributions theory, limit theorems of probability theory, stochastic processes, mathematical statistics, and queuing theory, this collection contains papers dealing with applications of stochastic models in modeling of pension schemes, modeling of extreme precipitation, construction of statistical indicators of scientific publication importance, and other fields.
