Book excerpt: An approximate model for the study of platoon formation on two-lane highways is discussed in detail. The model assumes that the two-lane highway is divided in each traffic direction into alternating road sections of fixed lengths. The passing in one type of section is unrestricted and the passing in the other one is prohibited. It is assumed that there are slow and fast vehicles on the highway and the inputs follow independent Poisson processes. The results include the distribution of the number of vehicles in a platoon and the average speed of a typical fast vehicle. (Author).

Book excerpt: This book is the result of the International Symposium on Semi Markov Processes and their Applications held on June 4-7, 1984 at the Universite Libre de Bruxelles with the help of the FNRS (Fonds National de la Recherche Scientifique, Belgium), the Ministere de l'Education Nationale (Belgium) and the Bernoulli Society for Mathe matical Statistics and Probability. This international meeting was planned to make a state of the art for the area of semi-Markov theory and its applications, to bring together researchers in this field and to create a platform for open and thorough discussion. Main themes of the Symposium are the first ten sections of this book. The last section presented here gives an exhaustive biblio graphy on semi-Markov processes for the last ten years. Papers selected for this book are all invited papers and in addition some contributed papers retained after strong refereeing. Sections are I. Markov additive processes and regenerative systems II. Semi-Markov decision processes III. Algorithmic and computer-oriented approach IV. Semi-Markov models in economy and insurance V. Semi-Markov processes and reliability theory VI. Simulation and statistics for semi-Markov processes VII. Semi-Markov processes and queueing theory VIII. Branching IX. Applications in medicine X. Applications in other fields v PREFACE XI. A second bibliography on semi-Markov processes It is interesting to quote that sections IV to X represent a good sample of the main applications of semi-Markov processes i. e.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book continues the biannual series of conference proceedings, which has become a classical reference resource in traffic and granular research alike, and addresses the latest developments at the intersection of physics, engineering and computational science. These involve complex systems, in which multiple simple agents, be they vehicles or particles, give rise to surprising and fascinating phenomena. The contributions collected in these proceedings cover several research fields, all of which deal with transport. Topics include highway, pedestrian and internet traffic; granular matter; biological transport; transport networks; data acquisition; data analysis and technological applications. Different perspectives, i.e., modeling, simulations, experiments, and phenomenological observations are considered.

Book excerpt: This book discusses the latest advances in research and development, design, operation and analysis of transportation systems and their complementary infrastructures. It reports on both theories and case studies on road and rail, aviation and maritime transportation. Further, it covers a wealth of topics, from accident analysis, vehicle intelligent control, and human-error and safety issues to next-generation transportation systems, model-based design methods, simulation and training techniques, and many more. A special emphasis is placed on smart technologies and automation in transport, and on the user-centered, ergonomic and sustainable design of transport systems. The book, which is based on the AHFE 2018 International Conference on Human Factors in Transportation, held in Orlando, Florida, USA on July 21–25, 2018, mainly addresses the needs of transportation system designers, industrial designers, human–computer interaction researchers, civil and control engineers, as well as vehicle system engineers. Moreover, it represents a timely source of information for transportation policy-makers and social scientists whose work involves traffic safety, management, and sustainability issues in transport.

Book excerpt: This is a true story about what George Konaf thought about the truth of the Vietnam War before he would die of Agent Orange. He now walks with a cane for support. He wanted to tell you how the PX and the man who ran the Army, who was in charge of the whole Army, and every Marine, and Air Force, the general who assisted the president of the US, and how crooked he was, and all the other generals who made millions from every war. In my mind, all of them didn't care for the people of the US. What made me sick was that some of these kids went to war, but only a few actually went. The general and commander never told the US how Vietnam's Agent Orange kills, desert wars had bad effects on the soldiers, and uranium was the only weapon that would kill the enemy (Afghanistan) and other enemies that fought in the desert. They never told the soldiers of each war that within two to three years, they would be impotent for the rest of the lives. I, George Konaf, have been impotent now for thirty years, and in my mind, I should have been killed in Vietnam. But now, I am glad I was not and can tell the true story of these men, high ranking, and millionaires. The crooks who run this country. At last, I am writing to die. I am getting weaker every day, and now I need a cane to hold me up. If I had to do it again, I would, for my country and for my fellow Americans who are living here. I am a true American. And now that I told my story, I am ready to die.
