Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are transitioning towards a new and different culture, a digital one in which the medium of photography becomes dangerously diluted in an image world produced moment by moment and consumed at a rapid pace. Photographic images and their reception inevitably converge with the symbolic, cultural, social, and political implications of the act of looking. Here, 40 contributors share their perspectives on photography in Lebanon, evoking its numerous forms of existence. Examining techniques, practices, uses, objects, images, histories, and artistic approaches, the book presents a fascinating collection of 380 photographs produced between the end of the 19th century and today.

Book Synopsis Reading Marie al-Khazen’s Photographs by : Yasmine Nachabe Taan
Download or read book Reading Marie al-Khazen’s Photographs written by Yasmine Nachabe Taan and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-11-26 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Lebanese photographer Marie al-Khazen seized every opportunity to use her camera during the years that she was active between 1920 and 1940. She not only documented her travels around tourist sites in Lebanon but also sought creative experimentation with her camera by staging scenes, manipulating shadows, and superimposing negatives to produce different effects in her prints. Within her photographs, bedouins and European friends, peasants and landlords, men and women comfortably share the same space. Her photographs include an intriguing collection portraying her family and friends living their everyday lives in 1920s and '30s Zgharta, a village in the north of Lebanon. Yasmine Nachabe Taan explores these photographs, emphasizing the ways in which notions of gender and class are inscribed within them and revealing how they are charged with symbols of women's emancipation to today's viewers, through women's presence as individuals, separate from family restrictions of that time. Images in which women are depicted smoking cigarettes, driving cars, riding horses, and accompanying men on hunting trips counteract the common ways in which women were portrayed in contemporary Lebanon.

Download or read book Rania Matar: She written by and published by . This book was released on 2021-11-16 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Portraits of American and Middle Eastern young women entering adulthood from Rania Matar, author of L'Enfant-Femme As a Lebanese-born American artist and mother, Rania Matar's (born 1964) cross-cultural experiences inform her art. She has dedicated her work to exploring issues of personal and collective identity through photographs of female adolescence and womanhood--both in the United States where she lives, and in the Middle East where she is from. Rania Matar: She focuses on young women in their late teens and early twenties, who are leaving the cocoon of home, entering adulthood and facing a new reality. Depicting women in the United States and the Middle East, this project highlights how female subjectivity develops in parallel forms across cultural lines. Each young woman becomes an active participant in the image-making process, presiding over the environment and making it her own. Matar portrays the raw beauty of her subjects--their age, individuality, physicality and mystery--and photographs them the way she, a woman and a mother, sees them: beautiful, alive.

Book excerpt: “Spectacular . . . a majestic collection that captures the drama of everyday existence in war zones around the world. . . . There is no disputing the impact of this revelatory collection.” —BookPage From the Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist and New York Times bestselling author, a stunning and personally curated selection of her work across the Middle East, South Asia, and Africa Pulitzer Prize–winning photojournalist and MacArthur Fellow Lynsey Addario has spent the last two decades bearing witness to the world’s most urgent humanitarian and human rights crises. Traveling to the most dangerous and remote corners to document crucial moments such as Afghanistan under the Taliban immediately before and after the 9/11 attacks, Iraq following the US-led invasion and dismantlement of Saddam Hussein’s government, and western Sudan in the aftermath of the genocide in Darfur, she has captured through her photographs visual testimony not only of war and injustice but also of humanity, dignity, and resilience. In this compelling collection of more than two hundred photographs, Addario’s commitment to exposing the devastating consequences of human conflict is on full display. Her subjects include the lives of female members of the military, as well as the trauma and abuse inflicted on women in male-dominated societies; American soldiers rescuing comrades in the Korengal Valley of Afghanistan, and Libyan opposition troops trading fire in Benghazi. Interspersed between her commanding and arresting images are personal journal entries and letters, as well as revelatory essays from esteemed writers such as Dexter Filkins, Suzy Hansen, and Lydia Polgreen. A powerful and singular work from one of the most brilliant and influential photojournalists working today, Of Love & War is a breathtaking record of our complex world in all its inescapable chaos, conflict, and beauty.

Book excerpt: Historic Lebanon is best known for its role in the Revolutionary War. It was the home of rebel governor Jonathan Trumbull and William Williams, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. Museums and other sites that tell the story of Connecticut's important contributions to the patriot cause surround Lebanon's mile-long town green, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Located thirty miles east of Hartford, Lebanon was first settled in the 1690s and incorporated in 1700, and until 1804 included the present town of Columbia. While most residents now commute out of town to work, Lebanon remains primarily rural, striving to preserve its agricultural roots. This book tells the story of the people, places, and events that make Lebanon a town to celebrate.

Book Synopsis Exhausted on the Cross by : Najwan Darwish
Download or read book Exhausted on the Cross written by Najwan Darwish and published by New York Review of Books. This book was released on 2021-02-23 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A much-anticipated follow-up to Nothing More to Lose, this is only the second poetry collection translated into English from a vital voice of Arabic literature. “We drag histories behind us,” the Palestinian poet Najwan Darwish writes in Exhausted on the Cross, “here / where there’s neither land / nor sky.” In pared-down lines, brilliantly translated from the Arabic by Kareem James Abu-Zeid, Darwish records what Raúl Zurita describes as “something immemorial, almost unspeakable”—a poetry driven by a “moral imperative” to be a “colossal record of violence and, at the same time, the no less colossal record of compassion.” Darwish’s poems cross histories, cultures, and geographies, taking us from the grime of modern-day Shatila and the opulence of medieval Baghdad to the gardens of Samarkand and the open-air prison of present-day Gaza. We join the Persian poet Hafez in the conquered city of Shiraz and converse with the Prophet Mohammad in Medina. Poem after poem evokes the humor in the face of despair, the hope in the face of nightmare.

In 1939 a group of Armenians from the area Musa Dagh, who had survived the massacre and persecution perpetrated by the Young Turks, found each other. With support from the French colonial government, they managed to buy the land. Not only did the city planning that ensued foresee giving each family some land and a house, they also built three confessional schools in Anjar-apostolic, catholic, protestant. In celebration of the city's eightieth anniversary, the architects Vartivar Jaklian and Hossep Bahovan discuss this utopia, which is devoted to social and individual life, in this illustrated volume containing historical sketches and current photographs, as well as companion texts. The film accompanying the book also features interviews with today's residents of Anjar.
