Book excerpt: Recent developments in the electron beam diagnostics used on the Los Alamos Free-Electron Laser (FEL) have extended our on-line, quantitative analysis capability to extraction efficiency and micropulse temporal duration. The FEL's 20-MeV electron beam is 100 .mu.s in length and consists of approx. 2000 micropulses of 20-ps duration and 46-ns separation. This extreme range of time scales is addressed by employing a combination of synchronized beam deflectors, an electron spectrometer, intensified video cameras, real-time video digitizers, and microcomputers. The tapered wiggler result for extraction efficiency (2%) and results for pulse duration measurements (10 to 15 ps) by two techniques are presented.

The electron beam consists of macropulses that have a duration of 100 .mu.s and a repetition rate of 1 Hz. Each macropulse consists of a series of micropulses that have approx. 30 ps duration, approx. 50 A peak current, and approx. 50 ns separation. The primary purpose of the electron beam diagnostic is measurement of the time dependence of the electron energy distribution during the build-up of the photon field in the oscillator. Since the exact time of build-up depends on various rf and cavity considerations, provisions were made to allow the observation window to be varied from 10 to 100 .mu.s and to be delayed by times up to 100 .mu.s. 5 references, 9 figures.

Beam profiles and beam divergence patterns from a single macropulse were recorded simultaneously using two intensified charge-injection device (CID) television cameras and an optical beamsplitter. Both single-foil OTR and two-foil OTR interference experiments were performed. Preliminary results are compared to a reference variable quadrupole, single screen technique. New aspects of using OTR properties for pointing the e-beam on the FEL oscillator axis, as well as measuring e-beam emittance are addressed. 7 refs., 9 figs.

In this paper, we discuss measurements of electron-beam transport during decelerations greater than 70% from 21 MeV down to 5 MeV. Power-flow measurements demonstrate the efficient conversion of beam power back into rf power and its reuse in the accelerator. We also describe instabilities of the system and compare them with simulations.

The analyses are based on the measurement of the electron beam's energy spectron as a function of time under lasing and nonlasing conditions. In the nongraphic, tuneup mode the procedure takes about six seconds, so at a 1 Hz repetition rate for the laser we can analyse one out of every six shots. If graphics output is desired, it is produced at a 20-s repetition rate. The tapered wiggler result for extraction efficiency, eta approx. 2% is presented as an example.

Book excerpt: The Los Alamos free-electron laser (FEL) amplifier experiment was designed to demonstrate high efficiency for transfer of energy from an electron beam to a light beam in the magnetic field of a tapered wiggler. Initial results indicate an energy transfer consistent with theory. Distinct groups of decelerated electrons as well as accelerated electrons are clearly present in the energy spectrum of electrons emerging from the wiggler when the laser light is present. The observed energy decrease for the electrons captured in the decelerating bucket is approx. 6% and the average decrease of the entire energy distribution is approx. 2% for the conditions of these initial measurements.

Book excerpt: A comparison between some of the measurements made with a uniform wiggler during the Los Alamos free-electron laser oscillator experiment and the results of one-dimensional pulse propagation calculations using the mathematical model of Colson and Ride will be presented. Small-signal gain data will be discussed. Calculated output power vs. optical resonator length will be compared with data. Time-integrated optical spectral data, which show clear evidence for Raman sidebands, will be compared with calculated spectra as a function of resonator length. The calculated electron energy distribution function, using the measured electron-beam micropulse shape, and the associated extraction efficiency will be compared with measurements.
