Book excerpt: This report describes working hardware and software developed to realize large-scale Brain-State-in-a-Box (BSB) models on a workstation with hardware acceleration using a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA). Just one Xilinx XC2VP70 FPGA was able to support about 600 128-dimensional BSB models to run at 10ms reaction time. Software was developed that controls the hardware operations and sends/receives data through publish/subscribe routines provided by an open-source package. Next, the confabulation based knowledge base training function on the Cell Broadband Engine (CBE) was implemented. The workload of the training function was distributed to 6 Synergistic Processing Elements (SPEs) in the Cell processor. Dynamic memory management techniques were developed to enable the SPE to load and write back information from/to the main memory during the training process. Preliminary software profiling was performed to indicate the performance bottleneck and guide the software optimization. The Cell-based implementation achieved 4X~9X speedups comparing to traditional processors.

When, in a ther apeutic climate (which can be objectively defined) a person becomes sharply aware of more of his or her internal experiencing and of the stimuli and demands from the external world, thus acquiring a full range of options, the person tends to move in the direction of becoming a socially constructive organism. But many are critical of this point of view. Why should such a positive direction be observed only in humans? Isn't this just pure op- · . ? timi sm. So quite hesitantly, because I have to draw on the work and thinking of others rather than on my own experience, I should like to try to set this directional tendency in a much broader context. I shall draw on my general reading in the field of science, but I should like to mention a special indebtedness to the work of Lancelot Whyte in The Universe of Experience (Harper and Row, 1974), the last book he wrote before his death. Though the book has flaws, in my judgment this historian has some thought-provoking themes to advance. I have learned from many others as well.

The Workshop, funded mainly by the NATO Scientific Affairs Division, together with a contribution from the (British) Economic and Social Research Council, was conducted at II Ciocco, Tuscany, Italy, 21-27 June 1987. The venue for our discussions was ideal: a quiet holiday hotel, 500m high in the Apennine mountain range, approached by a mile of perilously steep, winding narrow road. The isolation was conducive to concentrated discussions on the topics of the Workshop. The reason for the Workshop was a felt need for researchers from disparate but related approaches to cognition, emotion, and motivation to communicate their perspectives and arguments to one another. To take just one example, the framework of information processing and the metaphor of mind as a computer has wrought a major revolution in psychological theories of cogni tion. That framework has radically altered the way psychologists conceptualize perception, memory, language, thought, and action. Those advances have formed the intellectual substrate for the "cognitive science" perspective on mental life.
