Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses nonselfadjoint (Lambda)-nonlinear boundary eigenvalue problems for ordinary differential equations. Asymptotic boundary conditions for uniform convergence of generalized eigenfunction expansions are given by a recursion and expansion theorems are established by a careful analytic study of the asymptotic behaviour of Green's function. The theory is illustrated by various examples from technical mechanics.

Book excerpt: In this report the authors consider the boundary value problem P sub lambda: x'=f(t, x, y, lambda), y'=g(t, x, y, lambda), A sub 1 y(a)+A sub 2 y'(a)=0, B sub 1 y(b)+B sub 2 y'(b)=0. x(t) and y(t) are scalar functions for t epsilon (a, b), (A sub 1)squared + (A sub 2)squared> zero, (B sub 1)squared +(B sub 2)squared> zero. Values of the parameter lambda (eigenvalues) are sought for which there exists a nontrivial solution of P sub lambda. Two existence theorems are established and these are applied in several situations previously studied. In particular, one theorem applies to a model of a nonlinear vibrating string. (Author).

Book excerpt: "Homotopy Analysis Method in Nonlinear Differential Equations" presents the latest developments and applications of the analytic approximation method for highly nonlinear problems, namely the homotopy analysis method (HAM). Unlike perturbation methods, the HAM has nothing to do with small/large physical parameters. In addition, it provides great freedom to choose the equation-type of linear sub-problems and the base functions of a solution. Above all, it provides a convenient way to guarantee the convergence of a solution. This book consists of three parts. Part I provides its basic ideas and theoretical development. Part II presents the HAM-based Mathematica package BVPh 1.0 for nonlinear boundary-value problems and its applications. Part III shows the validity of the HAM for nonlinear PDEs, such as the American put option and resonance criterion of nonlinear travelling waves. New solutions to a number of nonlinear problems are presented, illustrating the originality of the HAM. Mathematica codes are freely available online to make it easy for readers to understand and use the HAM. This book is suitable for researchers and postgraduates in applied mathematics, physics, nonlinear mechanics, finance and engineering. Dr. Shijun Liao, a distinguished professor of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, is a pioneer of the HAM.

Book excerpt: The report considers the nonlinear eigenvalue problem (A - B(lambda))x = 0 in a Hilbert space, where A = or> 0 is compact and B(lambda) is a polynomial with nonnegative operator coefficients, satisfying B(0) = 0. It is shown that if A and B(lambda) are in certain operator classes, then there exists an unconditional basis of the Hilbert space consisting of eigenvectors x corresponding to nonnegative eigenvalues lambda. It is also shown that the nonnegative eigenvalues can be characterized by variational principles. (Author).

Book excerpt: A survey of the development, analysis, and application of numerical techniques in solving nonlinear boundary value problems, this text presents numerical analysis as a working tool for physicists and engineers. Starting with a survey of accomplishments in the field, it explores initial and boundary value problems for ordinary differential equations, linear boundary value problems, and the numerical realization of parametric studies in nonlinear boundary value problems. The authors--Milan Kubicek, Professor at the Prague Institute of Chemical Technology, and Vladimir Hlavacek, Professor at the University of Buffalo--emphasize the description and straightforward application of numerical techniques rather than underlying theory. This approach reflects their extensive experience with the application of diverse numerical algorithms.

Book excerpt: Fixed-point theorems are applied to obtain solutions (u sub k(t), theta sub k(t)) of nonlinear fourth order ordinary differential equations of the form u double prime = lambda theta (H sub 1)(t, u, theta), theta double prime = lambda u (H sub 2)(t, u, theta). The solution (u sub k(t), theta sub k(t)) is distinguished by the fact that each function (u sub k(t) or theta sub k(t) has exactly k interior nodal zeros. The basic conditions implying these existence theorems is lambda sub k

Book excerpt: The thesis consists of three papers focussing on the study of nonlinear elliptic partial differential equations in a nonempty open subset Ω of the n-dimensional Euclidean space Rn. We study the existence and uniqueness of the solutions, as well as their behaviour near the boundary of Ω. The behaviour of the solutions at infinity is also discussed when Ω is unbounded. In Paper A, we consider a mixed boundary value problem for the p-Laplace equation ∆pu := div(|∇u| p−2∇u) = 0 in an open infinite circular half-cylinder with prescribed Dirichlet boundary data on a part of the boundary and zero Neumann boundary data on the rest. By a suitable transformation of the independent variables, this mixed problem is transformed into a Dirichlet problem for a degenerate (weighted) elliptic equation on a bounded set. By analysing the transformed problem in weighted Sobolev spaces, it is possible to obtain the existence of continuous weak solutions to the mixed problem, both for Sobolev and for continuous data on the Dirichlet part of the boundary. A characterisation of the boundary regularity of the point at infinity is obtained in terms of a new variational capacity adapted to the cylinder. In Paper B, we study Perron solutions to the Dirichlet problem for the degenerate quasilinear elliptic equation div A(x, ∇u) = 0 in a bounded open subset of Rn. The vector-valued function A satisfies the standard ellipticity assumptions with a parameter 1 < p < ∞ and a p-admissible weight w. For general boundary data, the Perron method produces a lower and an upper solution, and if they coincide then the boundary data are called resolutive. We show that arbitrary perturbations on sets of weighted p-capacity zero of continuous (and quasicontinuous Sobolev) boundary data f are resolutive, and that the Perron solutions for f and such perturbations coincide. As a consequence, it is also proved that the Perron solution with continuous boundary data is the unique bounded continuous weak solution that takes the required boundary data outside a set of weighted p-capacity zero. Some results in Paper C are a generalisation of those in Paper A, extended to quasilinear elliptic equations of the form div A(x, ∇u) = 0. Here, results from Paper B are used to prove the existence and uniqueness of continuous weak solutions to the mixed boundary value problem for continuous Dirichlet data. Regularity of the boundary point at infinity for the equation div A(x, ∇u) = 0 is characterised by a Wiener type criterion. We show that sets of Sobolev p-capacity zero are removable for the solutions and also discuss the behaviour of the solutions at ∞. In particular, a certain trichotomy is proved, similar to the Phragmén–Lindelöf principle.

Book excerpt: Constructive methods developed in the framework of analytic functions effectively extend the use of mathematical constructions, both within different branches of mathematics and to other disciplines. This monograph presents some constructive methods-based primarily on original techniques-for boundary value problems, both linear and nonlinear. From among the many applications to which these methods can apply, the authors focus on interesting problems associated with composite materials with a finite number of inclusions. How far can one go in the solutions of problems in nonlinear mechanics and physics using the ideas of analytic functions? What is the difference between linear and nonlinear cases from the qualitative point of view? What kinds of additional techniques should one use in investigating nonlinear problems? Constructive Methods for Linear and Nonlinear Boundary Value Problems serves to answer these questions, and presents many results to Westerners for the first time. Among the most interesting of these is the complete solution of the Riemann-Hilbert problem for multiply connected domains. The results offered in Constructive Methods for Linear and Nonlinear Boundary Value Problems are prepared for direct application. A historical survey along with background material, and an in-depth presentation of practical methods make this a self-contained volume useful to experts in analytic function theory, to non-specialists, and even to non-mathematicians who can apply the methods to their research in mechanics and physics.
