Book excerpt: In 2016 Erica M Cornelius had risen up to the grade of Adeptus Minor 5=6 in Aleister Crowley's A.'.A.'.. She had moved into the Qabalistic sphere of Tiphereth-6 (תפארת), or the Sun, on the Tree of Life. It was time for her to learn what it means by the phrase "Every man and every woman is a star." (Liber AL I:3) Her first goal was to learn that the light of her Star doesn't always shine unhampered, and just as the light of the Sun in the heavens is occasionally blocked by dense cloud-cover, so too her inner light can be blocked. As an Outer Adept, her goal was to lift these clouds, these shadow-like miasma and phantoms that she has created which controls her 'personality' or ego as it relates to those spheres below her Star toward Malkuth-10 (מלכות). Like a scientist she began researching what was real and what was incorrect, vanquishing every aspect of false Knowledge that has hindered or would hinder her growth. Being in the A.'.A.'. is like sitting on a psychiatrist's couch. It's not all about doing rituals or taking on some fancy-sounding title as if that alone was proof of an accomplishment. It's realizing that you've chosen an incarnation in order to gain a certain experience. We call this experience our True Will. This book details one woman's journey and magickal struggle to fulfill the Adeptus Minor's first obligation, which is learning how to use a Bullshit Meter.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Actor's Mindset: Acting as a Craft, Discipline, and Businessuniquely prepares actors to live a full, successful life as a performing artist. While most acting books focus on either the art or the business of entertainment, Archibald looks at the entire picture of what it means to be an actor, focusing on the foundations of both the artist and the entrepreneur to guarantee a complete and fully functioning approach to a career. The Actor's Mindset is divided into three distinct parts: "The Craft," "The Discipline," and "The Business." Archibald's unique experience as both an actor and a coach gives him an unparalleled perspective on the current industry landscape. While classic method texts still circulate, and there are actors who have written books that address craft, none have Archibald's depth of knowledge and experience in coaching, nor approach the art from a professional standpoint instead of solely a teaching one. The success of Craig's approach is exemplified by the success of his clients, a roster that includes Constance Wu, John Slattery, and two-time Academy Award Nominee Dan Futterman.

At the same time, there are also malicious lies meant to deceive, cheat, and defraud. Especially in today’s world, in which technology, media, and the government have blurred the lines between fact and fiction, you can’t always rely on what comes out of someone’s mouth or what you see on the internet or television. It doesn’t take mind-reading superpowers to be able to tell when someone is lying—but it does take special skills and a little practice. In How to Become a Human Shit Detector, international expert in undercover operations Dr. David Craig provides readers with an easy-to-follow guide on applying lie-detection skills to your everyday life. From the simple skills of bargaining, making a purchase, or dealing with children, to the more serious business of negotiating a contract, identifying infidelity, or understanding lies in politics, Craig delivers simple but effective tips and techniques we can all use to see behind the façade and find our way to the truth. The culmination of more than twenty years of practical criminology and hundreds of hours of academic research, this book is the premier guide to the art of lie-detecting. Split into three parts, the book looks at understanding lies and how to detect lies, and it includes an easy reference section that summarizes all the main points. The mystery of what a person is really thinking is finally unlocked in this fascinating and informative book.

Book excerpt: During his early teens, Jeff Bratton started using drugs. At first, alcohol and pot, but quickly he spiraled into using cocaine, ketamine, crystal meth and eventually heroin. How could this wonderful son, loving brother, and star athlete lose himself to drugs? How could his parents be so clueless? How could his mother, the long-term head of a private school, be so blind? "Stagli vicino", an Italian recovering addict told the author. "Stay close—never leave him, even when he is most unlovable." This is not a book about saving a child. It is a book about what it means to stay close to a loved one gripped by addiction. It is about one son who came home and one mother who never gave up hope. Stay Close is one mother's tough, honest, and intimate tale that chronicles her son's severe drug addiction, as it corroded all relationships from the inside out. It is a story of deep trauma and deep despair, but also of deep hope—and healing. Here is Libby Cataldi's story about dealing with addiction without withdrawing love, learning to trust again while remaining attuned to lies, and the cautious triumph of staying clean one day at a time. He told her, "Mom, never quit believing." And she didn't.

This book was released on 2021-07-27 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Expanding upon his viral TEDx Talk, psychology professor and social scientist John V. Petrocelli reveals the critical thinking habits you can develop to recognize and combat pervasive false information that harms society in The Life-Changing Science of Detecting Bullshit. Bullshit is the foundation of contaminated thinking and bad decisions leading to health consequences, financial losses, legal consequences, broken relationships, and wasted time and resources. No matter how smart we believe ourselves to be, we’re all susceptible to bullshit—and we all engage in it. While we may brush it off as harmless marketing sales speak or as humorous, embellished claims, it’s actually much more dangerous and insidious. It’s how Bernie Madoff successfully swindled billions of dollars from even the most experienced financial experts with his Ponzi scheme. It’s how the protocols of Mao Zedong’s Great Leap Forward resulted in the deaths of 36 million people from starvation. Presented as truths by authority figures and credentialed experts, bullshit appears legitimate, and we accept their words as gospel. If we don’t question the information we receive from bullshit artists to prove their thoughts and theories, we allow these falsehoods to take root in our memories and beliefs. This faulty data affects our decision making capabilities, sometimes resulting in regrettable life choices. But with a little dose of skepticism and a commitment to truth seeking, you can build your critical thinking and scientific reasoning skills to evaluate information, separate fact from fiction, and see through bullshitter spin. In The Life-Changing Science of Detecting Bullshit, experimental social psychologist John V. Petrocelli provides invaluable strategies not only to recognize and protect yourself from everyday bullshit, but to accept your own lack of knowledge about subjects and avoid in engaging in bullshit just for societal conformity. With real world examples from people versed in bullshit who work in the used car, real estate, wine, and diamond industries, Petrocelli exposes the red-flag warning signs found in the anecdotal stories, emotional language, and buzzwords used by bullshitters that persuade our decisions. By using his critical thinking defensive tactics against those motivated by profit, we will also learn how to stop the toxic misinformation spread from the social media influencers, fake news, and op-eds that permeate our culture and call out bullshit whenever we see it.

Book excerpt: I’ll Get Back to You is the first book to teach you how to stop texts and emails from interfering with your relationships and your life. The issue with emails and texts is that they do not have instant feedback, like direct contact, where you can understand and clarify in real-time. The immediate feedback loop of the past has broken down, leaving us with broken communication loops. It’s created the Dyscommunication Crisis. You never know if the message will be misunderstood or returned. The worst is an unreturned message. You’ve been texting your boyfriend for over twenty-four hours, and he hasn't responded. You’ve been texting your child all day and haven’t received a response. The result is identical. We conclude something is wrong and justify it using the worst-case scenario. Unanswered messages have a significant psychological toll. Polls support this: 1. 67% of people suffer from agitation or anxiety. 2. 67% resort to worst-case scenarios to explain. 3. 71% of people fall into negative loops of thinking. 4. 46% admit to making a mistake they regret. Even when messages are returned, the exchange is not always complete. The message might be vague, or you may misinterpret it, resulting in similar issues. It’s a broken communication loop, and, unlike in the past, there's no direct input to clear things up. I’ll Get Back to You ensures that they read your message, not just scan it. There are solutions to ensure your messages are fully understood and promptly returned. There are interesting stories about relationships, dating, family, and work, along with self-improvement worksheets. I’ll Get Back to You offers practical solutions: - Tested tactics so messages are promptly returned. - Procedures in writing messages so they are understood. - Strategies to follow up on unreturned messages. - Proven ways to calm your mind quickly to reduce stress. There will be no more waiting, worrying, and miscommunication. I’ll Get Back to You has the answers and solutions that will improve your relationships and life.

Book excerpt: As an energy worker, Genesis Chandler’s job is to protect the healing pools all over planet Glory. Yet, ever since her grandmother died and her sisters left their town of Little Glory, Genesis can’t seem to find a purpose in her life anymore. She goes through her days with blinders on, reeling from having lost everyone and everything she knows and loves. Never does a person like Genesis, who is by nature gentle and unassuming, expect someone to take advantage of her grief and her disorientation … As a recent contractor for the Glory Energy Council, Connor Bateman is called in to investigate the odd energy fluctuations affecting all the townsfolk of Little Glory. Connor discovers it is directly connected to the healing pools in the forest preserve. Only Genesis can help him deal with the inevitable crisis. Unfortunately, Genesis is more than a little resistant to help Connor with anything, even this. Once upon a time she’d been in love with him, but then, after a disturbing fight, the next morning he had walked out on her abruptly, without another word. Connor realized his mistake too late, but, not knowing how to take it back, he’s avoided her all this time. Seeing her again assures him of two things that he does not want to consider: that he’s still in love with her and that she doesn’t want anything more to do with him. Regardless of their personal feelings, Genesis and Connor must find a way to work together to discover who’s destroying the energy reserve that’s the key to all life forms on the planet. Their very survival depends on it …

Gentle, non-assuming Genesis Chandler is supposed to be protecting the woods, as is her nature – she’s an energy worker – but since Granny’s death and her sisters leaving town, she’s lost sight of much in her life. While she was living with blinders on, someone else took advantage. Connor has been called in to investigate the sacred forest. Something odd is happening to the reserve, and it’s affecting the town’s energy source. That also means it’s connected to the sacred pools. He’s got energy problems himself and needs Genesis to get to the bottom of this problem. Genesis has no love for Connor. His fault. He loved her and left her, not realizing he’d left the best part of himself behind – his heart. Can they work together to find out who is destroying their energy reserve – a resource that’s key to the life of all who live on Glory? Their survival depends on it. Tori Hurt and betrayed, Tori has gone into hiding. Anything to give her time to heal from losing the love of her life. Devon came looking for her… for all the wrong reasons. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An intimate profile of the legendary mixed martial arts (MMA) referee, this first full-length autobiography of pop culture icon “Big” John McCarthy details every aspect of his life—from his strong-handed Los Angeles upbringing to his involvement in the naming of the sport, his role in its regulation, and MMA’s rise in stature. The narrative follows “Big” John through his 22-year career as a Los Angeles police officer, where he taught recruits arrest and control procedures as well as survival tactics, then his 15-year career as MMA’s premier official in the chain-linked cage. A fixture of the sport, “Big” John started refereeing at UFC 2 in 1994 when MMA was in its infancy and went on to officiate at every major UFC event but two until 2007. Following a one-year hiatus as a color commentator and on-camera analyst for MMA and boxing events, he returned to MMA refereeing in 2008. In his own words, "Big" John relates his insider’s perspective from the midst of many of the sport’s greatest moments—from Tito Ortiz–Ken Shamrock I at UFC 40 in 2002 to Randy Couture–Tim Sylvia at UFC 68 in March of 2007—along with his account of the birth of the sport in America, its evolution, and MMA’s ongoing struggles for acceptance.
