Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Weak solutions of hyperbolic conservation laws are not uniquely determined by their initial values; an entropy condition is needed to pick out the physically relevant solution. The question arises whether finite-difference approximations converge to this particular solution. It is shown in this paper that in the case of a single conservation law, monotone schemes, when convergent, always converge to the physically relevant solution. Numerical examples show that this is not always the case with nonomonotone schemes, such as the Lax-Wendroff scheme. (Author).

Book Synopsis Shock Waves, Increase of Entropy and Loss of Information by :
Download or read book Shock Waves, Increase of Entropy and Loss of Information written by and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We discuss, for the simplified model of a single conservation law, the concepts of genuine nonlinearity, breakdown of classical solutions, solutions in the distribution sense and their nonuniqueness, the viscosity method, finite difference methods, and the shock condition. We then discuss, for the scalar model, the compactness of solutions constructed by the viscosity and difference methods, and derive the entropy inequality for such solutions. We derive Glimm's estimate for the total variation of solutions of scalar equations that satisfy the shock condition, and show that a discontinuous solution that satisfies the shock condition also satisfies the entropy condition. Scattered remarks are given about the equations of compressible flow: the increase of entropy, some consequences of Carnot's theorem, and the equipartition of energy in the wake of strong shocks.
Book Synopsis Numerical Methods for Conservation Laws by : LEVEQUE
Download or read book Numerical Methods for Conservation Laws written by LEVEQUE and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These notes developed from a course on the numerical solution of conservation laws first taught at the University of Washington in the fall of 1988 and then at ETH during the following spring. The overall emphasis is on studying the mathematical tools that are essential in de veloping, analyzing, and successfully using numerical methods for nonlinear systems of conservation laws, particularly for problems involving shock waves. A reasonable un derstanding of the mathematical structure of these equations and their solutions is first required, and Part I of these notes deals with this theory. Part II deals more directly with numerical methods, again with the emphasis on general tools that are of broad use. I have stressed the underlying ideas used in various classes of methods rather than present ing the most sophisticated methods in great detail. My aim was to provide a sufficient background that students could then approach the current research literature with the necessary tools and understanding. vVithout the wonders of TeX and LaTeX, these notes would never have been put together. The professional-looking results perhaps obscure the fact that these are indeed lecture notes. Some sections have been reworked several times by now, but others are still preliminary. I can only hope that the errors are not too blatant. Moreover, the breadth and depth of coverage was limited by the length of these courses, and some parts are rather sketchy.

Book Synopsis Numerical Methods for Conservation Laws by : Jan S. Hesthaven
Download or read book Numerical Methods for Conservation Laws written by Jan S. Hesthaven and published by SIAM. This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 571 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conservation laws are the mathematical expression of the principles of conservation and provide effective and accurate predictive models of our physical world. Although intense research activity during the last decades has led to substantial advances in the development of powerful computational methods for conservation laws, their solution remains a challenge and many questions are left open; thus it is an active and fruitful area of research. Numerical Methods for Conservation Laws: From Analysis to Algorithms offers the first comprehensive introduction to modern computational methods and their analysis for hyperbolic conservation laws, building on intense research activities for more than four decades of development; discusses classic results on monotone and finite difference/finite volume schemes, but emphasizes the successful development of high-order accurate methods for hyperbolic conservation laws; addresses modern concepts of TVD and entropy stability, strongly stable Runge-Kutta schemes, and limiter-based methods before discussing essentially nonoscillatory schemes, discontinuous Galerkin methods, and spectral methods; explores algorithmic aspects of these methods, emphasizing one- and two-dimensional problems and the development and analysis of an extensive range of methods; includes MATLAB software with which all main methods and computational results in the book can be reproduced; and demonstrates the performance of many methods on a set of benchmark problems to allow direct comparisons. Code and other supplemental material will be available online at publication.
Book Synopsis Finite Volume Methods for Hyperbolic Problems by : Randall J. LeVeque
Download or read book Finite Volume Methods for Hyperbolic Problems written by Randall J. LeVeque and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2002-08-26 with total page 582 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, first published in 2002, contains an introduction to hyperbolic partial differential equations and a powerful class of numerical methods for approximating their solution, including both linear problems and nonlinear conservation laws. These equations describe a wide range of wave propagation and transport phenomena arising in nearly every scientific and engineering discipline. Several applications are described in a self-contained manner, along with much of the mathematical theory of hyperbolic problems. High-resolution versions of Godunov's method are developed, in which Riemann problems are solved to determine the local wave structure and limiters are then applied to eliminate numerical oscillations. These methods were originally designed to capture shock waves accurately, but are also useful tools for studying linear wave-propagation problems, particularly in heterogenous material. The methods studied are implemented in the CLAWPACK software package and source code for all the examples presented can be found on the web, along with animations of many of the simulations. This provides an excellent learning environment for understanding wave propagation phenomena and finite volume methods.
Book Synopsis Relativistic Hydrodynamics by : Luciano Rezzolla
Download or read book Relativistic Hydrodynamics written by Luciano Rezzolla and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2013-09-26 with total page 752 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Relativistic hydrodynamics is a very successful theoretical framework to describe the dynamics of matter from scales as small as those of colliding elementary particles, up to the largest scales in the universe. This book provides an up-to-date, lively, and approachable introduction to the mathematical formalism, numerical techniques, and applications of relativistic hydrodynamics. The topic is typically covered either by very formal or by very phenomenological books, but is instead presented here in a form that will be appreciated both by students and researchers in the field. The topics covered in the book are the results of work carried out over the last 40 years, which can be found in rather technical research articles with dissimilar notations and styles. The book is not just a collection of scattered information, but a well-organized description of relativistic hydrodynamics, from the basic principles of statistical kinetic theory, down to the technical aspects of numerical methods devised for the solution of the equations, and over to the applications in modern physics and astrophysics. Numerous figures, diagrams, and a variety of exercises aid the material in the book. The most obvious applications of this work range from astrophysics (black holes, neutron stars, gamma-ray bursts, and active galaxies) to cosmology (early-universe hydrodynamics and phase transitions) and particle physics (heavy-ion collisions). It is often said that fluids are either seen as solutions of partial differential equations or as "wet". Fluids in this book are definitely wet, but the mathematical beauty of differential equations is not washed out.
Book Synopsis Hypersonic and High Temperature Gas Dynamics by : John David Anderson
Download or read book Hypersonic and High Temperature Gas Dynamics written by John David Anderson and published by AIAA. This book was released on 1989 with total page 710 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a self-contained text for those students and readers interested in learning hypersonic flow and high-temperature gas dynamics. It assumes no prior familiarity with either subject on the part of the reader. If you have never studied hypersonic and/or high-temperature gas dynamics before, and if you have never worked extensively in the area, then this book is for you. On the other hand, if you have worked and/or are working in these areas, and you want a cohesive presentation of the fundamentals, a development of important theory and techniques, a discussion of the salient results with emphasis on the physical aspects, and a presentation of modern thinking in these areas, then this book is also for you. In other words, this book is designed for two roles: 1) as an effective classroom text that can be used with ease by the instructor, and understood with ease by the student; and 2) as a viable, professional working tool for engineers, scientists, and managers who have any contact in their jobs with hypersonic and/or high-temperature flow.
Download or read book Duel at Dawn written by Amir Alexander and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2011-10-15 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the fog of a Paris dawn in 1832, variste Galois, the 20-year-old founder of modern algebra, was shot and killed in a duel. That gunshot, suggests Amir Alexander, marked the end of one era in mathematics and the beginning of another. Arguing that not even the purest mathematics can be separated from its cultural background, Alexander shows how popular stories about mathematicians are really morality tales about their craft as it relates to the world. In the eighteenth century, Alexander says, mathematicians were idealized as child-like, eternally curious, and uniquely suited to reveal the hidden harmonies of the world. But in the nineteenth century, brilliant mathematicians like Galois became Romantic heroes like poets, artists, and musicians. The ideal mathematician was now an alienated loner, driven to despondency by an uncomprehending world. A field that had been focused on the natural world now sought to create its own reality. Higher mathematics became a world unto itselfÑpure and governed solely by the laws of reason. In this strikingly original book that takes us from Paris to St. Petersburg, Norway to Transylvania, Alexander introduces us to national heroes and outcasts, innocents, swindlers, and martyrsÐall uncommonly gifted creators of modern mathematics.
Book Synopsis Statistical Mechanics by : James Sethna
Download or read book Statistical Mechanics written by James Sethna and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2006-04-07 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In each generation, scientists must redefine their fields: abstracting, simplifying and distilling the previous standard topics to make room for new advances and methods. Sethna's book takes this step for statistical mechanics - a field rooted in physics and chemistry whose ideas and methods are now central to information theory, complexity, and modern biology. Aimed at advanced undergraduates and early graduate students in all of these fields, Sethna limits his main presentation to the topics that future mathematicians and biologists, as well as physicists and chemists, will find fascinating and central to their work. The amazing breadth of the field is reflected in the author's large supply of carefully crafted exercises, each an introduction to a whole field of study: everything from chaos through information theory to life at the end of the universe.
