Book Synopsis The Provenance of Deuteronomy 32 by : Paul Sanders
Download or read book The Provenance of Deuteronomy 32 written by Paul Sanders and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-11-15 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study offers an extensive survey of previous literature dealing with the provenance of the song in Deuteronomy 32, a renewed discussion of its text and language as well as an analysis of its poetic structure with the help of a new method. The author tests the tenability of older theories and proposes a new theory based on systematic research into the intertextual links with other parts of the Hebrew Bible and extra-biblical literature of the Ancient Near East. Separate sections are dedicated to the song's descriptions of the relationship between YHWH and the gods and to the identity of the hostile people to which the song refers. The author concludes that a pre-exilic date is extremely likely for the song in its entirety.

Book Synopsis Deuteronomy and the Meaning of "Monotheism" by : Nathan MacDonald
Download or read book Deuteronomy and the Meaning of "Monotheism" written by Nathan MacDonald and published by Mohr Siebeck. This book was released on 2012 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nathan MacDonald examines the term 'monotheism' and its appropriateness as a category for analysing the Old Testament. He traces the use of 'monotheism' since its coinage in 1660 and argues that its use in Old Testament scholarship frequently reflects a narrowed, intellectualistic conception of religion."Finally, MacDonald's volume is a valuable contribution to the discussion because it is also a fine example of biblical theology, a truly insightful exposition of some of the significant themes in the book of Deuteronomy, accompanied by a fine, detailed exposition of crucial passages in the book. ...] This book is highly recommended for all who are interested in the debate concerning biblical monotheism and the larger study of Israel's religious identity."Robert Gnuse in Biblica, Vol. 86 (2005), No. 4, 558-560"This is one of the most significant and exciting books of biblical theology I have read for some time, illustrating how the Bible can come to life when critical attention is paid to the contemporary context of its interpretation."Philip Jenson in Themelios, Vol. 29 (2004), No. 2, 56-57

Book Synopsis Divine Anger in the Hebrew Bible by : Deena E. Grant
Download or read book Divine Anger in the Hebrew Bible written by Deena E. Grant and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2023-07-21 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, we explore the aim, expressions and outcomes of God's anger in the Hebrew Bible. We consider divine anger against the backdrop of human anger in order to discern those aspects of it that are recognizably human from those facets of it that are distinctly divine. Furthermore, we examine passages from a range of literary contexts across major biblical collections in order to distinguish those features of divine anger that are elemental to its definition from those that are limited to individual collections. The sum of these conclusions forms our answer to the question: What does the Bible mean when it describes God as angry?

But my scope has also been wider. I have wished to furnish, what may be useful for reading in the family, --what indeed may, in some measure, serve the place of a popular exposition of the sacred history. More than this, I hope it may likewise prove a book to put in the hands of students, to show them what the Bible really teaches." --Alfred Edersheim

Download or read book Deuteronomy written by Jack R. Lundbom and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2013-09 with total page 1064 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This milestone commentary by Jack Lundbom is intended for any and all readers who want to better know and understand the key Pentateuchal book of Deuteronomy, which has had a huge influence on both Judaism and Christianity over the centuries. For Jews Deuteronomy contains the Decalogue and the Shema -- Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God is one (6:4) -- supplemented by a code of primal legislation. Deuteronomy is much cited in the New Testament and has come to occupy an important place in the life and doctrine of the Christian church. It lifts up important wisdom themes such as humane treatment and benevolence to the poor and needy and is rich in theology, calling repeatedly on Israel to reject other gods and worship the Lord alone as holy. Besides drawing on language, archaeology, and comparative Near Eastern material, Lundbom s commentary employs rhetorical criticism in explicating the biblical text. Lundbom also cites later Jewish interpretation of the book of Deuteronomy and makes numerous New Testament connections. An appendix contains all citations of Deuteronomy in the New Testament.
