Modern inquirers appear to me to have erred in regarding malignant tumours so entirely from a microscopical point of view, for it concerns us rather to know why than how a morbid structure grows, and no amount of investigation into the size and Shape of the cells of which it is composed is likely to afiord us this information. After a con siderable expenditure of time and labour, and having examined with the microscope the digestive canal in about eighty persons who had died of cancer, I was obliged to abandon the hepe of discovering the indirect cause of the local disease in an alteration of the digestive process.
