Book excerpt: Kate Devine, an out-of-town member of the Saddle Club, has invited Carole, Lisa, and Stevie out West to visit her family's dude ranch. This time the girls' parents are coming along, and the Saddle Club is looking forward to showing them how much fun riding can be—as well as how much work and skill are involved. But out West, the family vacation doesn't go exactly as planned. Lisa's mom is acting like a total snob, and Carole's dad embarrasses her by dressing like a real Eastern dude. What's worse, none of the parents seems to be taking horseback riding very seriously. Soon the girls are wishing that their parents—or the "Saddlebags"—had stayed home where they belong. Then, during an overnight cattle drive, a terrible rainstorm breaks out while the parents are off exploring an arroyo. The Saddle Club knows the "Saddlebags" are in grave danger—but can they rescue them in time?

Book excerpt: The Time-Crunched Cyclist reveals the fastest way to get fit for road racing, century rides, gravel grinders, cyclocross, Gran Fondos, and mountain bike events. With elite cycling coach Chris Carmichael’s innovative, time-saving approach, busy cyclists will develop fitness, speed, and power in just 6 hours a week. Now powered by Strava, this updated third edition of The Time-Crunched Cyclist training program taps into the most popular cycling social network to help cyclists get fired up to crush their workouts, one segment at a time. Through his popular endurance coaching service, Carmichael noticed that many busy cyclists are unable to make performance gains using conventional training methods; they simply don’t have enough time to train. So CTS developed a new approachthe Time-Crunched Training Programto help cyclists achieve competitive fitness and power without the impossible time demands of traditional training methods. The Time-Crunched Cyclist shows cyclists how to build fitness on a realistic schedule by tapping the power of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) workouts. Cyclists learn the science behind this alternative approach to training before performing the CTS field tests to get a baseline reading of their fitness. Nine comprehensive training plans include effective time-crunched workouts, nutrition guidelines, and strength training to develop the speed and endurance for a wide variety of cycling races and events. The new Time-Crunched Training Plans cover: New and Experienced plans for criteriums, road races, and cyclocross New, Experienced, and Competitive plans for century rides and Gran Fondos Gravel racing and ultraendurance mountain biking plans Intermediate and Advanced plans for commuters This new, third edition integrates Strava, the popular ride tracking and analysis program. Dr. Joyce Harman, veterinarian and respected saddle-fitting expert, states that 75 percent of horses with such issues are simply reacting to pain caused by ill-fitting saddles. And, as she explains in this thorough and highly illustrated book, poor saddle fit can be corrected with patience and know-how.

Book excerpt: Widely known for her innovative teaching philosophy stressing body awareness, the value of "soft eyes," proper breathing, centering, and balance, Sally Swift has been a pioneering riding instructor for half a century. In book form for the first time, her methods enable horse and rider to achieve harmony, working together naturally, without pain. Unlike traditional teachers, Sally Swift does not believe in forced training techniques that cause stiff bodies and tense riding. Instead, through the use of vivid, unusual, and highly creative images that transcend mechanics ("Pretend you're a spruce tree; the roots grow down from your center as the trunk grows up"), plus a thorough knowledge of human and equine anatomy, this wise and inspiring teacher enables the conscientious equestrian to reassess habitual responses, in order to ride in natural positions, break through frustrating plateaus, and achieve ever-rising goals with comfort, vitality, and precision. Precise illustrations and photographs never before used in riding books explain anatomy and image work to give mind and body new and relaxed approaches to the inner process of riding. Centered Riding is for those with little experience all the way up to world class.

But when stock market manipulations leave him financially strapped, the oldest son of legendary rancher Sam Stafford decides to return to the sprawling Double S ranch in Gray's Glen, Washington. He's broke, but not broken, and it's time to get his legs back under him by climbing into the saddle again. He doesn't expect to come home to a stranger pointing a loaded gun at his chest-- a tough yet beautiful woman that Sam hired as the house manager. Colt senses there's more to Angelina Morales than meets the eye, and he's determined to find out what she's hiding...and why. Colt's return brings new challenges. Younger brother Nick, who's longbeen Sam's right-hand man, isn't thrilled when Colt inserts himself into Double S affairs. And the ranch's contentious relationship with the town's people forces all the Stafford men to reconsider what it truly means to be a neighbor. As Wall Street recovers, will Colt succumb to the call of the financial district--or stay in the saddle for good?

Book excerpt: A letter from Ann Twist Ray has been writing poetry for many years, but started writing more in l998, after I retired and had time to type them up for him. It has been a hobby that we both have enjoyed and loved to share with our family and friends. I refer to Ray as my poem machine. He seldom misses a day writing at least one and many times as many as three. Its been such a joy to share them. For many years, before he retired , he would write just occasionally. When our grandchildren were small, and would come to spend some time with us, he would always leave a poem for them on the table when he left for work. They always enjoyed his little stories that rhymed. Our dream is to publish a childrens book. We have enjoyed compiling and sharing them. My favorite are his spiritual, but, he has some wonderful western ones. Notice that he has some written, including some cow-boys that he has named Randy, Rusty, Lefty and Slim. We do hope that you will enjoy the ones we have put together for you. God Bless You and Your families. Ann Twist (B. 1926 D 2011)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A lot about Al Holley was larger than life: his size 13 custom-made riding boots; how his surgical ability extended to animals as well as peop≤ his endless renditions of "You Are My Sunshine" on the harmonica—the only song he was able to play; and his love of riding a good horse on a bright fall day. Dr. Al Holley had a storyteller's ability to captivate an audience. First, he would clear his throat, then, with eyes twinkling, he would [begin]. His stories were often a reflection of Al himself and generally went to the very essence of people. He had the unique ability to laugh, not only at what life tossed up but also at himself. Al Holley was not a man who minced his words. What he said was what he thought, no more no less; even if at times he had to extract a foot out of his mouth at a later date. Medicine was only one part of his life. Among other things, Dr. Holley was a Justice of the Peace in the Northwest Territories, a cowboy, an author, a stagecoach driver and actor in Barkerville, a historian, an artist, a hunter, an explorer, a rodeo doctor, a dogmusher, a train robber, a lieutenant in the RCA Medical Corp, a husband, a father, and a grandfather." —Dr. Geoff Thomas

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This charming account of life in Appalachia at the turn of the century is one of the three most important books from the early twentieth century that, as Dwight Billings writes in his foreword, have "had a profound and lasting impact on how we think about Appalachia and, indeed, on the fact that we commonly believe that such a place and people can be readily identified." Originally published in 1924, it was advertised as a "racy book, full of the thrill of mountain adventure and the delicious humor of vigorously human people." James Watt Raine provides eyewitness accounts of mountain speech and folksinging, education, religion, community, politics, and farming. In a conscious effort to dispel the negative stereotype of the drunken, slothful, gun-toting hillbilly prone to violence, Raine presents positive examples from his own experiences among the region's native inhabitants.

Excerpt: "WITH all the changes in fashion and fads, riding still holds its own, and the field which it occupies can never be invaded. For women, quite as much as and even more than for men, it is of all exercises the one best adapted to keep them in condition, to restore the glow of health, and to key up the whole system to respond to all the delights of life."
