Book excerpt: Omega was entrusted with timekeeping at the Los Angeles Olympic Games in 1932 and has since been the official timekeeper at 22 Olympics. That association has led to more than half a century of pioneering developments in timers and watches, from the first water-resistant photoelectric cell to the first photo-finish camera (an innovation that resolved the problem of group finishes in track events), and contact pads inside the pool at swimming competitions. They have continued to innovate, most recently with real time results online, available as soon as a swimmer hits the pool wall at the end of a lap. Yet it is the most tangible, touchable, wearable results of all this that brings Omega watches from the workplaces of athletes (including Michelle Wie and Michael Phelps) into the homes of design aficionados. John Goldberger, the editor of Omega Watches and Longines Watches here presents more than 50 years of rare and beautiful sport designs from the Omega line.

Book excerpt: John Goldberger has been collecting and studying vintage watches for over 25 years, which means he's spent many happy hours at jewelers' shops, flea markets, conventions and auctions around the world. His comprehensive and detailed illustrated book on the Omega family of Swiss timepieces is an indispensable asset to others who share his obsession, and to those who would love to--to armchair collectors. Omega Watches covers the history of more than 240 vintage models, with emphasis on their outer aspects--including the shape and outline of each case and its dial and movements, which are governing features for the collector, as well as clues to exceptional internal design. Goldberg has created a beautiful visual guide to Omega timepieces from the classic pocketwatch to the modern chronograph. Starting with the first models of the past century, Omega Watches displays the beauty, complexity and the collectibility of classic watches such as the Speedmaster, first produced in 1957, and the Seamaster, both of which are still produced today. All examples depicted are from private collections.

Book excerpt: In this guide to modern sports watches, discover honest assessments of luxury sports models, many varieties of chronographs, GMTs, and extreme diving watches, represented by the best sports brands in the world, including Patek Philippe, Breitling, Omega, Chronoswiss, and more. But first, what exactly is a sports watch? Jewelers, connoisseurs, and the editors have agreed on the following definition: a sporty-looking timepiece, usually made of steel, that stays on your arm whether you're racing, diving, or flying. In the 1970s, Gérald Genta designed three classic sports watches that challenged conservative styles and remained virtually unmodified for more than thirty years. Using Genta's legacy as a starting point, this new book traces the evolution of the sports watch to today, focusing on the 21st century, from simple, robust steel watches with three hands to more complicated timepieces, with detailed technical comparisons between models, some of which are already considered classics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born in 1842, Camille Flammarion was a French astronomer who wrote many popular books about science and astronomy, together with a number of novels which we would now consider to be science fiction. He was a contemporary of H. G. Wells and Jules Verne, though his works never achieved their level of popularity. Omega: The Last Days of the World is an English translation of Flammarion’s novel La Fin du Monde, published in 1893. The book’s fictional premise is the discovery of a comet on a collision course with the Earth in the 25th century. However, this is mostly a pretext on which Flammarion can hang his interesting scientific speculations about how the world will end, together with philosophical thoughts about war and religion. Much of the scientific description he uses in the book, while accurately representing the knowledge and thinking of his time, has today been superseded by modern discoveries. For example, we now know the source of the Sun’s energy to be nuclear fusion rather than being due to gravitational contraction and the constant infall of meteorites. When talking about the ills of society, however, Flammarion could well be talking about today’s world. For example, he excoriates the vast waste of society’s resources on war, and demonstrates how much more productive each nation’s economy would be without it. He also depicts the media of his future world as having been entirely taken over by commercial interests, publishing only what will excite the greatest number of readers rather than serving the public interest. Omega ranges over a vast period of time, from prehistory through to millions of years in the future when mankind has been reduced to the last two doomed individuals. Nevertheless, the book ends on a hopeful and inspiring note. This book is part of the Standard Ebooks project, which produces free public domain ebooks.

Book excerpt: - In this work, the authors have applied the rigorous, innovative methodology that contributed to the success of their previous publication, Moonwatch Only, ISBN 9782940506170, and which now represents the signature of the 'ONLY' books The highly evocative Flightmaster name was first mentioned by OMEGA in 1956-57, but it was not until the late 1960s that it was used to designate an incomparable watch, initially intended for aircraft pilots. At the time, it was regarded as the watch industry equivalent of the Swiss army knife, meaning the ultimate professional instrument. The aesthetically and technically remarkable OMEGA Flightmaster symbolizes a period rich in technological and design breakthroughs. Produced over a short period and relatively little known until now, it nonetheless enjoyed exceptional development and an outstanding destiny, notably on the wrist of Soviet cosmonauts in the 1970s. Revealing the entirely unknown and remarkably rich story for the first time, and based on their own methodology, the authors of the successful Moonwatch Only book dedicated to the OMEGA Speedmaster, provide a comprehensive account of the many variations and evolutions of the different Flightmaster models. The result is an essential reference work for all passionate brand enthusiasts and collectors. Contents: Foreword Section 1: Introduction; Flightmaster - what's in a name?; Some key points; Operation; Ten misconceptions to reconsider Section 2: A Legend's Genesis and History; A world of change; Creating a legend; Famous aviators and the ultimate destiny of a tool-watch: Russian space adventures Section 3: Main Components; An original approach; Caliber; Case; Dial; Bezel; Hands; Crowns and pushers; Glass; Bracelet; Accessories Section 4: Models; Introduction; Overview; Timeline; Tables.

Book excerpt: - The first complete book dedicated to one of the most desirable chronographs of the 1960s, Chronomaster Aviator Sea Diver by NIVADA & CROTON Chronomaster Aviator Sea Diver: this singular name belongs to one of the most original professional watches of the 1960s, combining an unparalleled number of functions with a timeless design. Created in 1961, this chronograph was produced for around ten years under several brand names, through a partnership between the Swiss company NIVADA SA and the American firm CROTON WATCH CO. This led to some of its dials bearing probably the most complicated name in watchmaking history: CROTON NIVADA GRENCHEN Chronomaster Aviator Sea Diver. Thanks to the authors' trademark rigorous methodology, the signature of the 'ONLY' reference works, this book reveals the incredible diversity of the Chronomaster models. It is intended both as an initiation for connoisseurs of exceptional watches and as a reference guide for collectors. This legendary watch will doubtless thus regain the place it deserves among the most desirable 1960s chronographs. Book excerpt: The early 2000s were an important period, spanning a time when mechanical watches had quite rightly retaken their place in the world market. We all may have a digital device in our pocket that is more accurate than a mechanical watch, but a timepiece has soul, personality, and history. The collection in this book is a step into the world of vintage watch collecting, with a range of photographs, intricate research, and accessible reference material that will intrigue both the casual and avid enthusiast. The collection showcases some of the most interesting, luxurious, and functional 20th-century (1930-1980) mechanical timepieces ever to be produced, including Heuer's Autavia, Rolex's Submariner, Gallet's MultiChron, Zenith's De Luca, and the Universal Space Compax.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1880s photographers and sports enthusiasts confidently declared the end of dead heats in sporting competition. Reflecting a broader social belief in technology, proponents of the camera stressed that the device could provide definitive proof of who won and who lost. Yet despite this remedy for the inadequate human eye, competitive races between horses, boats, and bicycles ended too close to call a sole champion. More than a century later, when cameras can subdivide the second into ten-thousandths and beyond, athletes continue to cross the finish line in ties. In this fascinating journey through the history of the photo-finish in sports, Jonathan Finn shows how innovation was animated by a drive for ever more precise tools and a quest for perfect measurement. As he traces the technological developments inspired by this crusade - from the evolution of the still camera to movie cameras, ultimately leading to complex contemporary photo-finish systems - Finn uncovers the social implications of adopting and contesting the photograph as evidence in sport. At every turn empirical obsession intersects with the unpredictability of sports, creating a paradox wherein the precision offered by photo-finish technology far exceeds the realities of human performance and its measurement. Separating athletes by the hundredth, thousandth, or ten-thousandth of a second is often a fiction that comes with significant material and cultural implications. A lively biography of a critical technology, Beyond the Finish Line illuminates the cultural role of the photo-finish in win-at-all-costs culture and warn that in our pursuit for precision we may threaten the human element of sport that galvanizes mere spectators into fans.
