This book was released on 2016-06-11 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume of twenty folktales belongs to what may be referred to as "volumes of Igbo folktales in other languages by native or foreign speakers of the language." It is destined to all Igbo people in diaspora, those who were born and bred outside Igboland, especially those who are domiciled in the United Kingdom, in other European countries, and in the United States of America. It is also written for non-Igbo speaking people who are interested in the cultural and the oral heritage of the Igbo. The book will certainly help those who have never been to Igboland to acquire a better and clearer understanding of the Igbo. It will equally serve as a handy reference pack to help storytellers enliven their repertoire. Mr. Clifford N. Ugochukwu (Nwachinemelu) was born in Isu, Akabo-Ukwu, Uruagu, Nnewi, Anambra State of Nigeria, in 1936. He grew up in Igboland, immersed in Igbo culture. He later studied at the University of Ibadan, the University of Nigeria (Nsukka), the University of Grenoble (France) and the French Institute, London. His first book, Ebubedike na Igwekala, won the First Prize in the All Nigeria Igbo Writers' Contest organised by the Christian Council of Nigeria in 1963 and was published in 1965 by Daystar Press, Ibadan. He subsequently contributed to a second book, Omalinze: A Book of Igbo Folktales, as the principal author. This book, published by Oxford University Press, Ibadan (1977), is still used as a major textbook in universities and higher education in Nigeria. His latest book in English, Isu Factor in Nnewi History, published by Tabansi, Onitsha (2000), reveals the contribution of Nri Kingdom to Igbo history, culture and civilisation, and retraces Isu settlements across Igboland.

Book excerpt: Igbo culture needs to be salvaged from the brink of extinction and the Author must be commended for documenting part of our heritage as a lot of people are dying with their knowledge. In this book, I am happy to see that each story began and ended the way Igbo folktales are told. The utilization of proverbs in the stories should expose the youth to proverbs and also inculcate the habit of using proverbs as the oil to eat words. Furthermore, the moral of the stories should also teach ethics which may help to restore proper values in our society. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past, scholars have looked at narratives of the African diaspora only to discover how these memoirs, poems, and fictions related to the West. The Trickster Comes West: Pan-African Influence in Early Black Diasporan Narratives explores relationships among African American, Afro-Caribbean, and Afro-British narratives of slavery and of New World and British oppression and what African influences brought to these diasporic expressions. Using an interdisciplinary method that combines history, literary theory, cultural studies, anthropology, folklore, and philosophy, the book examines the work of Pan-African trickster icons, such as Leuk (Rabbit), Golo (Monkey), Bouki (Hyena), Mbe (Tortoise), and Anancy (Spider), on the resistance strategies of early black writers who were exposing the evils of slavery, racism, sexism, economic exploitation, and other forms of oppression. Works discussed in this book include Phillis Wheatley's Poems on Various Subjects, Religious and Moral (1773), Quobna Ottobah Cugoano's Thoughts and Sentiments on the Evil of Slavery (1787), Olaudah Equiano's The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano (1795), Elizabeth Hart Thwaites's “History of Methodism” (1804), Anne Hart Gilbert's "History of Methodism" (1804), and Mary Prince's The History of Mary Prince: A West Indian Slave, Related By Herself (1831). Analyzing these writings in the context of the black Atlantic struggle for freedom, The Trickster Comes West relocates the beginnings of Pan-Africanism and suggests the strong influence of its theories of communal resistance, racial solidarity, and economic development on pioneering black narratives.

Africa boasts a particularly rich oral tradition, in which the griot — village historian — preserved and passed along cultural beliefs and experiences from one generation to the next. This collection of 30 timeless fables comes from the storytellers of Nigeria, whose memorable narratives tell of promises kept and broken, virtue rewarded, and treachery punished. Ajapa the Tortoise — a trickster, or animal with human qualities — makes frequent appearances among the colorful cast of talking animals. In "Tortoise Goes Wooing," he learns a valuable lesson in friendship and sharing. Ajapa's further adventures describe how, among other things, he became a chief, acquired all of the world's wisdom, saved the king, tricked the lion, and came to be bald. Recounted in simple but evocative language, these ancient tales continue to enchant readers and listeners of all ages.

Book excerpt: This book presents an innovative African philosophical response to coloniality and the attendant epistemicide of Africa’s knowledge systems, drawing on Igbo thinking. This book argues that theorizing modernity requires a critical conversation between African and Western scholarship, in order to unpack its links with coloniality and the subjugation of Africa’s indigenous knowledges. In setting out this discussion, the book also connects with Latin American scholarship, demonstrating how the modern world is structured to marginalize and destroy knowledges from across the Global South. This book draws on Igbo epistemic resources of solidarity thinking, positioned in contrast to capitalist knowledge-patterns, thereby providing an important Africa-driven response to modernity and coloniality. This book concludes by arguing that the Igbo sense of solidarity is useful and relevant to modern contexts and thus constitutes a vital resource for a less disruptive, more balanced, and more wholesome modernity. At a time of considerable global crises, this book makes an important contribution to philosophy both within Africa and beyond.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Things Fall Apart is the most widely read and influential African novel. Published in 1958, it has sold more than eight million copies and been translated into fifty languages. African culture is not familiar to most American readers however, and this casebook provides a wealth of commentary and original materials that place the novel in its historical, social, and cultural contexts. Ogbaa, an Igbo scholar, has selected a wide variety of historical and firsthand accounts of Igbo history and cultural heritage. These accounts illuminate the historical context and issues relating to the colonization of Africa by European powers, in particular Britain's colonization of Nigeria. Fascinating materials bring to light the novel's cultural context—folkways, language and narrative customs, and traditional Igbo religion. Among the documents included are a slave narrative, interviews, journal and magazine articles, and historical essays. Each chapter is followed by questions for class discussion and ideas for student paper topics. A selection of maps and photos of Igbo culture complement the text. Following a literary analysis, historical documents trace the European powers' partition of Africa and the creation and colonization of Nigeria, home of the Igbo people. Several chapters on Igbo cultural harmony feature materials that explain the Igbo view of the world of humans and the world of the spirits, Igbo language, and traditional Igbo religion and material customs. Selections on the African novelists' novel place Things Fall Apart in the context of African literature and emphasize the difference between African and Western elements of fiction. A concluding chapter examines the debate on writing African novels in ex-colonizers' languages. This casebook will greatly enhance the reader's appreciation of the novel and understanding of Igbo history, society, culture, and civilization.
