Book excerpt: In an attempt to address these limitations, the OGI-UBC Research Team welcomes any feedback that supports our continuous efforts to improve the quality of the data and evaluation of the impacts of the 2010 Games. [...] The project has three main objectives: • To measure the overall impact of the Games; • To assist bidding cities and future organizing committees to maximize the benefits of the Games; and • To create a comparable benchmark across all future Games. [...] OGI and the 2010 Games Vancouver was selected in 1998 by the Canadian Olympic Committee to bid for the 2010 Games, and was selected in 2003 by the IOC to host the 2010 Games. [...] Attributing Impacts to the 2010 Games In conclusion, the hosting of the Games and the implementation of the Own the Podium 2010 and Podium Canada initiatives to some extent improved the performance of Canadian athletes in elite amateur athletic competitions. [...] However, further analyses showed that the increase was only in Vancouver (excluding Vancouver from Metro Vancouver showed a loss of units in the rest of the region), and that there has been a loss of units relative to the population at the Metro Vancouver level.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Olympic Games have become the world’s greatest media and marketing event—a global celebration of exceptional athletics gilded with corporate cash. Huge corporations vie for association with the "Olympic Image" in the hope of gaining a worldwide marketing audience of billions. In this provocative critical study of the contemporary Olympics, Jules Boykoff argues that the Games have become a massive planned economy designed to shield the rich from risk while providing them with a spectacle to treasure. Placing political economy at the center of the analysis, and drawing on interdisciplinary research in sociology, politics, geography, history, and economics, Boykoff develops an innovative theory of "celebration capitalism", the manipulation of state actors as partners that drives us towards public–private partnerships in which the public pays and the private profits. He argues that the Athens Games in 2004 marked the full emergence of celebration capitalism, with London 2012 representing its quintessential expression, characterized by a state of exception, unfettered commercialism, repression of dissent, questionable sustainability claims, and the complicity of the mainstream media. Controversial, challenging, and forthright, this book opens up a fascinating new avenue for understanding the contemporary Olympics in the context of global capitalist society. It is essential reading for anybody with an interest in the Olympic Games, the relationship between sport and society, or global politics and culture.

Book excerpt: Olympic Games are sold to host city populations on the basis of legacy commitments that incorporate aid for the young and the poor. Yet little is known about the realities of marginalized young people living in host cities. Do they benefit from social housing and employment opportunities? Or do they fall victim to increased policing and evaporating social assistance? This book answers these questions through an original ethnographic study of young people living in the shadow of Vancouver 2010 and London 2012. Setting qualitative research alongside critical analysis of policy documents, bidding reports and media accounts, this study explores the tension between promises made and lived reality. Its eight chapters offer a rich and complex account of marginalized young people’s experiences as they navigate the possibilities and contradictions of living in an Olympic host city. Their stories illustrate the limits to the promises made by Olympic bidding and organizing committees and raise important questions about the ethics of public funding for such mega‐events. This book will be fascinating reading for anyone interested in the Olympics, sport and social exclusion, and sport and politics, as well as for those working in the fields of youth studies, social policy and urban studies.

Book excerpt: The Government of British Columbia and the Government of Canada have made major commitments to the success of the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. Theses commitments have encompassed funding for 2010 Winter Games-related infrastructure and operations, together with a wide range of policy and funding initiatives aimed at using the 2010 Winter Games as a catalyst for implementing, enhancing and/or accelerating programs for individuals, organizations and communities. As a result, the Government of British Columbia through the BC Olympic and Paralympic Games Secretariat and the Government of Canada through the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games Federal Secretariat have identified the need to assess the economic and social impacts of the 2010 Winter Games before, during and after hosting the Games. PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP has been engaged to conduct this series of impact assessments using a combination of research and benchmarking methods. The entire project was conducted from 2008 through 2013. The overall objective of the project was to identify the impacts of the 2010 Winter Games on BC and Canada.

The introduction describes basic concepts of economic impact used in the report. Part 1 reviews the logic & data employed in the economic impact model used in the January 2002 study: specifically, whether the model captures & isolates the incremental economic impact of the Games. The non-tourism aspects and tourism aspects of the model are reviewed separately and the revisions undertaken in the updated model are listed. Part 2 contains the following: a review of the updates to the economic multipliers applied to the Games-related expenditures, with explanation of the appropriate use of economic multipliers and the limitations of multiplier analysis; presentation of the direct, indirect, & induced incremental economic impacts of the Games as generated by the updated model; discussion & analysis of several supplemental issues; and the conclusions resulting from the economic impact study. Appendices provide supplemental background & analysis.
