Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on a decade of research by two leading action sports scholars, this book maps the relationship between action sports and the Olympic Movement, from the inclusion of the first action sports to those featuring for the first time in the Tokyo Olympic Games and beyond. In an effort to remain relevant to younger audiences, four new action sports, surfing, skateboarding, sport climbing, and BMX freestyle were included in the Tokyo Olympic program. Drawing upon interviews with Olympic insiders, as well as leaders, athletes, and participants in these action sports communities, the book details the impacts on the action sports industry and cultures, and offers national comparisons to show the uneven effects resulting from Olympic inclusion. It reveals the intricate workings of power and politics in contemporary sports organisations, and maps key trends in this changing sporting landscape. Action Sports and the Olympic Games is a fascinating read for anybody studying the Olympics, the sociology of sport, action sports, or sport policy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first of its kind to discuss doping within Non-Olympic Sports. Sports like American football, cricket and dance sports have, in recent years, been in the news for doping activities. The scale of the incidents may differ in each of these sports, but they present interesting questions about the legitimacy of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Code. Doping in Non-Olympic Sports: Challenging the legitimacy of WADA? argues against the International Olympic Committee (IOC)-run regime where WADA Code compliance is used as the only parameter to define an activity as a sport. The book argues that the definition of modern sport is based on certain factors identified through sociological and historical research. These parameters are common across the board and do not distinguish between Olympic and Non-Olympic sports. However, the use of the word Olympic in the Non-Olympic sport terminology subjects such sports to IOC dictates. Consequently, the IOC exploits its monopoly over the word Olympics to insist on WADA Code compliances. The numerous instances of doping, as reported, go on to prove that WADA is turning a blind eye to these Non-Olympic sports. This book is the first to dissect the issue of doping within Non-Olympic sports and questions the very idea of WADA compliance as a condition precedent to defining sports going on to highlight the inbuilt inequity within the existing anti-doping system wherein a private regime is usurping the State’s discretion. The new, cutting edge research book is key reading for academics and researchers in the fields of Coaching, Sport Pharmacology, Sport Medicine, Sports Law, and the related disciplines.

Book excerpt: Back in 775 BC, athletes from all over Ancient Greece came together to compete in various games. The contests were held every four years and winning athletes brought honor and respect to their homelands. The tradition of the Olympic Games faded over time until 1896, when they were brought back to life. The first modern Olympics were held in Athens, Greece, with over two hundred athletes from fourteen countries. Today, nearly three thousand years after the first Games, the Summer Olympics attract one hundred thousand top athletes from over two hundred countries. Billions of fans around the world cheer on their national teams to bring back the gold.

Book excerpt: The must-have guide to the Summer Olympic Games This summer, millions of Americans will tune into the Olympic Games, the largest and most popular sporting event in the world. Yet while it's easy to be fascinated by agile gymnasts, poised equestrians, and perfectly synchronized swimmers, few of us know the real width of a balance beam, the intricate regulations of dressage, or the origin of those crowd-pleasing legs-in-the-air swimming formations. Luckily, David Goldblatt and Johnny Acton have created this utterly thorough and always fun guide to the rules, strategy, and history of each sport. Originally timed to 2012 London Games, their book is every bit as useful for Rio de Janeiro in 2016. With witty, detailed descriptions and clever illustrations, How to Watch the Olympics will help anyone grasp handball, archery, wrestling, fencing, and every other Olympic event like a true pro.

Book excerpt: The 1904 Olympic Games in St. Louis were both unusual and controversial. One of the major problems for Olympic scholars has been to determine which of the events at these Games were truly of Olympic caliber. The Games were included as part of the World's Fair, and every athletic contest that took place under the Fair's auspices was deemed "Olympic." These activities included croquet and water polo, high school and college championships in football and basketball, as well as the "Anthropology Days" events in which members of "primitive" "tribes" competed against one another. The author demonstrates, after great deliberation, that 16 events of the 21 overall were truly Olympic sports and gives descriptions, scores, and analyses for each (as well as for the five non-Olympic events). Appendices include literature relating to these games, lists of noncompeting foreign entrants, and a guide to all competitors.
