Book Synopsis Poor People, Poor Places by : Dennis Graham Pringle
Download or read book Poor People, Poor Places written by Dennis Graham Pringle and published by Oak Tree Press (Ireland). This book was released on 1999 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poverty is not uniformly distributed throughout Ireland. Some areas clearly experience much higher levels of poverty than others, whether urban public housing estates or peripheral rural areas. However, the spatial dimensions of poverty are, at best, only partially understood. This book brings together disparate sources of information on the geography of poverty and initiates a debate from which can emerge more effective policy responses. It should be of interest to students of geography and the social sciences, and should appeal to policy-makers and practitioners concerned with spatial responses to poverty, such as those involved in urban, rural and community interventions.
Book Synopsis The Community Life of Older People in Ireland by : Carmel Gallagher
Download or read book The Community Life of Older People in Ireland written by Carmel Gallagher and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2008 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a contemporary sociological account of the lives of older people in two different communities in Ireland, one urban and one rural. The book is based on primary research that examined the social and community participation of older people in Rathmore and Rathbeg using both ethnographic and survey approaches. The data presented provides insights into the nature of a community in a rapidly changing society and into older people's contributions to that community. It points to realms of activity that offer genuine meaning and value in older people's lives. A model of connectedness is developed in the study that identifies key characteristics and processes involved in sociability and solidarity within neighbourhoods and communities. A typology of ten relational patterns describes the different ways in which older adults may be connected within their communities. The author proposes an explanatory framework for understanding the complex and varied connections between people in communities. The book also demonstrates what older people in Ireland perceive as a good life.

Book Synopsis Old Age in Nineteenth-Century Ireland by : Chris Gilleard
Download or read book Old Age in Nineteenth-Century Ireland written by Chris Gilleard and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-05-16 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using a combination of statistical analysis of census material and social history, this book describes the ageing of Ireland’s population from the start of the Union up to the introduction of the old age pension in 1908. It examines the changing demography of the country following the Famine and the impact this had on household and family structure. It explores the growing problem of late life poverty and the residualisation of the aged sick and poor in the workhouse. Despite slow improvements in many areas of life for the young and the working classes, the book argues that for the aged the union was a period of growing immiseration, brought surprisingly to an end by the unheralded introduction of the old age pension.

Book Synopsis Social Work in Northern Ireland by : Heenan, Deirdre
Download or read book Social Work in Northern Ireland written by Heenan, Deirdre and published by Policy Press. This book was released on 2011-03-23 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past 40 years, social work in Northern Ireland has been responsive to a number of changing contexts and environments. Throughout 'the Troubles,' social workers had to develop methods of ensuring services were delivered in spite of the surrounding violence and civil disturbance. At the same time, they developed imaginative and creative new services in response to needs and demands. This book outlines the historical development of social work in Northern Ireland, looking at what has been achieved and analyzing the challenges for the future. It considers the role of social work in a society emerging from conflict, facing demographic, technological, and economic changes. Social work in Northern Ireland has been dismissed by policy makers and academics as unique, special, or different, and therefore not worthy of attention. This book demonstrates that international audiences have much to learn from the social work response to a changing political landscape.
