Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Olive Sharkey is the daughter of farmers in the midlands of Ireland. 'I belong to a family which was the last in our district to relinquish the old ways on the land and in the home,' she says. Her research brought her to folk museums throughout Ireland and 'into the homes of fascinating elderly folk with surprisingly clear memories.' The daily and seasonal rhythms of life and work 'in the ould days' is recaptured, from building the house and turning the sod for a new crop, to saving the hay and burying the dead.
Book Synopsis Wolds' Old Ways by : Florence Hopper
Download or read book Wolds' Old Ways written by Florence Hopper and published by Arena books. This book was released on 2013-12-02 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'This book will bring back old times, take care of it,' wrote Florence Hopper, freelance journalist, in the front of her cuttings book. Found in the depths of a dark cupboard crawled into by her niece, after her aunt died, and now edited by her, it is a fascinating read.At first it was kept safe for the family to enjoy. Starting early in the 1930s the cuttings are a verbatim record of life in a busy market town and on the Wolds farms it served, including some on fishing disputes between onshore fishermen from rival East Coast towns, where the Wolds meet the sea with precipitous cliffs. The cuttings have been arranged in sections according to subject, each one being chronological; sheep farming, including lambing and shearing, the inevitable problems with weather, and some amusing conversations between farm-hands in dialect overheard by Florence when at Driffield cattle market are all in the farming section. She visited haunted houses in the winter of 1937, interviewing the owners who lived in them. The communities and children's sections, which include readers' comments quoted from letter written direct to the columnist, give us a picture of a wide and lively community which was changed completely by the outbreak of war in September 1939.

Download or read book Old Farm written by Jerry Apps and published by Wisconsin Historical Society. This book was released on 2013-03-29 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the Midwest's best-loved authors tells the story of his land, from the last great glacier that dug out its valleys and formed its hills, to his own family's 40 year relationship with the beloved farm they call Roshara. In this quiet but epic tale, Apps describes the Native Americans who lived on the land for hundreds of years, tapping the maple trees and fishing the streams and lakes, as well as the first white settlers who tilled its sandy acres, plowing the native grasses that grew taller than their teams of oxen. For all their work, the farm proved tough to tame. Hardscrabble farming methods and hard luck often brought failure. "From land that provided only a marginal living for its early owners, this place we call Roshara has provided much for my family and me," writes Apps. He and his wife and their children have cared for the farm not so much to make a living as to enhance their lives. Apps chronicles the family's efforts — always earnest, if sometimes ill-advised — to restore an old granary into living space, develop a productive vegetable garden, manage the woodlots, reestablish a prairie, and enjoy nature's sounds and silences. Breathtakingly beautiful color photographs by Apps's son, Steve (a professional photographer), highlight the ever-changing beauty of the land in every season and hint at the spiritual gifts that are the true bounty this family reaps from Roshara. Central to Apps' work is his belief that the land is something to cherish and revere. Like Aldo Leopold before him, Apps sounds an inspirational call to readers to preserve wild and rural places, leaving them in better condition than we found them for future generations.

Book excerpt: At the end of the Red River War, any lingering vestige of the fierce Indian hegemony over the Southern Plains was completely crushed and the tribes of native people were now restricted to government-controlled reservations in Oklahoma Territory. The abrupt change left vacant thousands of acres of unclaimed land which the frontier settlers of Texas and other states began to move into and claim as their own. Old customs die hard, however, and for the next few years of transition, there were still echoes of the old ways reverberating across the land.

Book Synopsis Learning and Sustaining Agricultural Practices by : Karen Haydock
Download or read book Learning and Sustaining Agricultural Practices written by Karen Haydock and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-03-26 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes a participatory case study of a small family farm in Maharashtra, India. It is a dialectical study of cultivating cultivation: how paddy cultivation is learnt and taught, and why it is the way it is. The paddy cultivation that the family is doing at first appears to be ‘traditional’. But by observation and working along with the family, the authors have found that they are engaging in a dynamic process in which they are questioning, investigating, and learning by doing. The authors compare this to the process of doing science, and to the sort of learning that occurs in formal education. The book presents evidence that paddy cultivation has always been varying and evolving through chance and necessity, experimentation, and economic contingencies. Through the example of one farm, the book provides a critique of current attempts to sustain agriculture, and an understanding of the ongoing agricultural crisis.
