Book excerpt: Discover the history of Shrewsbury, Massachusetts. Incorporated in 1727, this once small farming town has transformed itself into a successful business and residential community. Meet the "Father of the Stages," nicknamed for his stagecoach line, and the many other inventive citizens of Shrewsbury. Experience the fun of the White City Amusement Park. From the days of Maj. Gen. Artemas Ward, the first commander in chief of the Revolutionary army, to the social days around Lake Quinsigamond, Shrewsbury takes you through these dramatic changes. Using exciting vintage photographs and postcards, Shrewsbury provides the first comprehensive photographic account of how the town once looked. Readers will learn about Balance Rock, the old town hall, and one-room schoolhouses. They will see stately mansions, the many attractions Lake Quinsigamond once had, and parts of the town that exist only in memory, such as South Shrewsbury and the Lower Village. Shrewsbury will allow all the town's citizens, past and present, to see and enjoy its history firsthand.

Book Synopsis Shrewsbury Through Time II by : Michael Perna Jr
Download or read book Shrewsbury Through Time II written by Michael Perna Jr and published by America Through Time. This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the publication of Shrewsbury Through Time in 2013, a number of collections of historical photographs have come to light. Photographs from the Harlow family collection help to document the early history of the town and many of its oldest buildings. The Higgins collection covers subjects somewhat more recent. The wonderful set of views, taken just prior to the building of what today is known as Route 9 in 1930, gives us great insight into the many changes that have taken place since then, courtesy of Mr. Frank Morrill. The town of Shrewsbury continues to evolve even todaya number of development projects are in the works or are in the planning stage. These include several medical/retail complexes, a large-scale UPS facility, and a new elementary school. As the town changes, hopefully many of the remaining historic structures will be preserved for future generations to appreciate.

Book Synopsis Founding Martyr by : Christian Di Spigna
Download or read book Founding Martyr written by Christian Di Spigna and published by Crown. This book was released on 2018-08-14 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A rich and illuminating biography of America’s forgotten Founding Father, the patriot physician and major general who fomented rebellion and died heroically at the battle of Bunker Hill on the brink of revolution Little has been known of one of the most important figures in early American history, Dr. Joseph Warren, an architect of the colonial rebellion, and a man who might have led the country as Washington or Jefferson did had he not been martyred at Bunker Hill in 1775. Warren was involved in almost every major insurrectionary act in the Boston area for a decade, from the Stamp Act protests to the Boston Massacre to the Boston Tea Party, and his incendiary writings included the famous Suffolk Resolves, which helped unite the colonies against Britain and inspired the Declaration of Independence. Yet after his death, his life and legend faded, leaving his contemporaries to rise to fame in his place and obscuring his essential role in bringing America to independence. Christian Di Spigna’s definitive new biography of Warren is a loving work of historical excavation, the product of two decades of research and scores of newly unearthed primary-source documents that have given us this forgotten Founding Father anew. Following Warren from his farming childhood and years at Harvard through his professional success and political radicalization to his role in sparking the rebellion, Di Spigna’s thoughtful, judicious retelling not only restores Warren to his rightful place in the pantheon of Revolutionary greats, it deepens our understanding of the nation’s dramatic beginnings.
