They were two distinct machines. It appears, from a record in the Domesday Book, that as far back as the days of Edward the Confessor, any man or woman detected giving false measure in the city of Chester was fined four shillings; and for brewing bad ale, was placed in the cathedra stercofls. It was a degrading mode of chastisement, the culprits being seated in the chair at their own doors or in some public place. At Leicester, in 1467, the local authorities directed scolds to be punished by the Mayor on a cuck-stool before their own doors, and then carried to the four gates of the town. According to Borlase's Natural His tory of Cornwall, in that part of the country the cucking - stool was used as a seat of infamy. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Endless Punishment: In the Very Words of Its Advocates F ortunately the time has now arrived when these grave questions can be discussed with a degree of calmness and under an absence of prejudice and passion which hitherto it has been difficult, if not impossible, to com mand. The larger hope, nay, the assured belief, of the final victory of good over evil, is no longer so utterly heretical as to throw its possessor beyond the pale of common-sense and Christian charity. The most zealous advocate of endless punishment is obliged to confess that there is something to be said in favor of a doctrine for which all good men pray, and which, if true, would not only fill the moral universe with joy, but must also te dound to the infinite glory of God. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old-Time Punishments In the year 1881, I produced a small work, entitled, "Punishments in the Olden Time," and, to my surprise, in less than three months four thousand copies were sold. After that number had been published, and numerous flattering notices given by the critical press, I resolved to write a larger book on the same subject. The result of my labours is presented in the following pages. I hope this volume contains interesting information which docs not usually come under the notice of the reader, but nevertheless important in throwing light on the history of bygone times. In the preparation of this book, I have consulted several hundred works, and drawn facts from ancient records which still remain in manuscript; and the daily and weekly newspapers have also supplied me with items I have deemed worthy of quotation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Punishment: A Plant in Four Acts To write a truthful and effective play in which certain characters shall be criminals or ex-convicts is a difficult task, even for an experienced dramatist; for while the psychology of the prisoner is not fundamentally different from that of other men, yet he has lived under such abnormal conditions, - conditions so compelling, that it is hard even for the most practised student of human nature to comprehend his point of view. Fully to understand the convict one must go to prison; and few dramatists are eager to do that. Still more difficult is it to write a play dealing with the actual life of the prison; for the task of making the plot deal with real prison material and yet make the facts seem both true and interesting to an audience, is almost insuperable. Many of the important details of prison life are certainly not agreeable, and in a drama would hardly seem credible. The authors of Punishment have succeeded to a very remarkable degree. Book excerpt: A brilliant work from the most influential philosopher since Sartre. In this indispensable work, a brilliant thinker suggests that such vaunted reforms as the abolition of torture and the emergence of the modern penitentiary have merely shifted the focus of punishment from the prisoner's body to his soul.
