Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Park Street and Its Vicinity The total elision of the R, and the amazing, broad, flat A, as in "Park Street," give to Bostonian speech a magnificently indigenous tang; hint at juniper and spruce forests, rocky fields, pumpkins, Thanksgiving and pie. Harrison Rhodes Boston is just like other places of its size; only perhaps, considering its excellent fish-market, paid fire department, superior monthly publications, and correct habit of spelling the English language, it has some right to look down upon the mob of cities. O. W. Holmes Let every child that is born of her, and every child of her adoption see to it to keep the name of Boston as clean as the Sun; and in distant ages her motto shall be the prayer of millions on all the hills that gird the town: "As with our Fathers, so God be with us." R. W. Emerson There is a region, lovelier far than Eden's vales and vistas are; Serene and sheltered in repose from every stormy wind that blows; A place than all besides more sweet; at once you know it, Beacon Street! Boston. A Poem, by A. F. W. Boston is one of the grandest, sure-footedest, clear-headedest, comfortablest cities on the globe. Onlike every other large city I was ever in, the most of the hackmen dont seem to have bin speshully intended by natur for the Burglery perfession. And its about the only city 1 know of where you dont enjoy a brilliant opportunity of bein' swindled in sum way, from the risin' of the Sun to the goin' down thereof. There I say, loud and continnerd applaus for Boston! Artemus Ward About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever since the English settled in America, extreme poverty and the inability of individuals to support themselves and their families have been persistent problems. In the early nineteenth century, many communities established almshouses, or "poorhouses," in a valiant but ultimately failed attempt to assist the destitute, including the sick, elderly, unemployed, mentally ill and orphaned, as well as unwed mothers, petty criminals and alcoholics. This work details the rise and decline of poorhouses in Massachusetts, painting a portrait of life inside these institutions and revealing a history of constant political and social turmoil over issues that dominate the conversation about welfare recipients even today. The first study to address the role of architecture in shaping as well as reflecting the treatment of paupers, it also provides photographs and histories of dozens of former poorhouses across the state, many of which still stand.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drinking a glass of tap water, strolling in a park, hopping a train for the suburbs: some aspects of city life are so familiar that we don’t think twice about them. But such simple actions are structured by complex relationships with our natural world. The contours of these relationships—social, cultural, political, economic, and legal—were established during America’s first great period of urbanization in the nineteenth century, and Boston, one of the earliest cities in America, often led the nation in designing them. A richly textured cultural and social history of the development of nineteenth-century Boston, this book provides a new environmental perspective on the creation of America’s first cities. Eden on the Charles explores how Bostonians channeled country lakes through miles of pipeline to provide clean water; dredged the ocean to deepen the harbor; filled tidal flats and covered the peninsula with houses, shops, and factories; and created a metropolitan system of parks and greenways, facilitating the conversion of fields into suburbs. The book shows how, in Boston, different class and ethnic groups brought rival ideas of nature and competing visions of a “city upon a hill” to the process of urbanization—and were forced to conform their goals to the realities of Boston’s distinctive natural setting. The outcomes of their battles for control over the city’s development were ultimately recorded in the very fabric of Boston itself. In Boston’s history, we find the seeds of the environmental relationships that—for better or worse—have defined urban America to this day.

Book excerpt: Until publication of Riches, Classes, and Power, Alexis de Tocquerville's vision of the United States as a generally egalitarian nation predominated. While historians might quarrel about the social sources of egalitarianism, they did not dispute the soundness of the basic model; and Tocqueville's vision clearly dominated American's sense of itself as well. A self-acknowledged congenital skeptic, Pessen decided to find out whether the facts of American life sustained Tocqueville's conclusions. Riches, Class, and Power, represents more than five years' intensive research on the wealth, family backgrounds, careers, marriages, residential patterns, uses of leisure, life-styles, social standing, and influence and power of the wealthy in four of the five largest cities in the United States before the Civil War. Pessen examines New York City, Philadelphia, Boston and the then-separate city of Brooklyn in the 1820s and 1840s. His claim is that the massive evidence on urban life of the time sharply refutes Tocqueville's thesis. A National Book Award finalist for history, Riches, Class, and Power undoubtedly helped reshape America before the Civil War. In his reintroduction to this paperback edition, Pessen reviews the critical reaction, and reconsiders the extent to which its findings are applicable to the social structure of small or frontier towns of the period. He discusses whether unequal distribution of wealth in America results more from changes in historical circumstance or to shifts in demographic or age structure.

Book excerpt: This little book is not so much a guide book in itself as an introduction or key to local guides,or a preparation for conversation with intelligent Boston people, who will meet a newcomer into that town. Every summer there arrive people from different parts of the world who have a curiosity about the history of Boston, or about its activities in past times, which they would gladly gratifiy, as well as possible, in a few days' stay there.
