Book excerpt: Old Man Savarin by Edward William Thomson is a collection of short stories about an old lady who goes fishing, an old grandfather who proposes to lend someone some money, a poor couple with twelve young children to feed, and more. Excerpt: "Yes, indeed, my grandfather was once in jail," said old Mrs. McTavish, of the county of Glengarry, in Ontario, Canada; "but that was for debt, and he was a ferry honest man whatever, and he would not break his promise—no, not for all the money in Canada."

Download or read book Old Man Savarin Stories written by Edward William Thomson and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2017-10-13 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a collection of 17 short stories and a preceding poem. Of the 16 stories, nine of them are about Canada or Canadians, and five of the other seven, set in the U.S., South Africa, and England, are narrated by Canadian natives. In an extensive review of the book, Glenys Stow says that action is the central theme of Thomson's stories: "a heroic father is swept over Niagara Falls; a lumberman's son works feverishly to salvage a broken crib of logs in order to support his starving family; ten soldiers in the Army of the Potomac gallop through the night carrying despatches at the risk of their lives," Canadian Literature, No. 66, Autumn, 1975, p. 122. In sum, the book provides a view of early Canadian life from a number of different perspectives.

Book Synopsis History of Literature in Canada by : Reingard M. Nischik
Download or read book History of Literature in Canada written by Reingard M. Nischik and published by Camden House. This book was released on 2008 with total page 622 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of literature in Canada with an eye to its multicultural, multiethnic, multilingual nature. From modest colonial beginnings, literature in Canada has arrived at the center stage of world literature. Works by English-Canadian writers -- both established writers such as Margaret Atwood and new talents such as Yann Martel -- make regular appearances on international bestseller lists. French-Canadian literature has also found its own voice in the North American and francophone worlds. "CanLit" has likewise developed into a staple of academic interest, pursued in Canadian Studies programs in Canada and around the world. This volume draws on the expertise of scholars from Canada, Germany, Austria, and France, tracing Canadian literature from the indigenous oral tradition to thedevelopment of English-Canadian and French-Canadian literature since colonial times. Conceiving of Canada as a single but multifaceted culture, it accounts for specific characteristics of English- and French-Canadian literatures, such as the vital role of the short story in English Canada or that of the chanson in French Canada. Yet special attention is also paid to Aboriginal literature and to the pronounced transcultural, ethnically diverse character ofmuch contemporary Canadian literature, thus moving clearly beyond the traditions of the two founding nations.
