He served in the Eastern Theater of the war for the entire conflict, as a division commander under Stonewall Jackson and Richard Stoddert Ewell, and in later actions commanded a corps. He was the Confederate commander in key battles of the Valley Campaigns of 1864, including a daring raid to the outskirts of Washington, D.C. Book excerpt: Biography of Jubal Anderson Early (1816-1894), a son of Joab Early and Ruth Hairston, born in the Red Valley farming section of Franklin County, Virginia. The immigrant ancestor was probably John Early, who immigrated from England to Virginia about 1650. Jubal attended West Point between 1833 and 1837, and resigned from the United States army in 1838 to study law, receiving his certificate to practice in 1840 and entering the state political arena. He re-enlisted in the army in 1847-1848 during the Mexican War (serving in Texas and in Monterrey, Nuevo León, Mexico). Against both slavery and secession, he voted against the latter in the Virginia Secession Convention in 1861, but promptly entered the Confederate Army when Virginia did seceded. He was a colonel, soon promoted to brigadier general, usually serving under General Robert E. Lee's command in northern Virginia from 1862 to 1864. He was then given the 2nd Corps. and drove northward to nearly capture Washington, D.C., and burn Chambersburg, Pennsylvania. General Sheridan and then General Custer defeated General Early and, unreconstructed, he fled to Mexico and then Canada, returning in 1869 under President Andrew Johnson's proclamation of amnesty. He helped found and served as president of the Southern Historical Society.
