Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tall, handsome Yale graduate, Walter McClintock, was 26 when he accompanied Gifford Pinchot as a photographer on an expedition to the American west in 1896. He returned repeatedly for many years afterward, studying and photographing the Blackfoot Indians in northwest Montana.Spending months at a time as a resident in their villages, he was eventually adopted into the tribe as the son of Chief Mad Wolf. As an ethnologist, McClintock was interested in the traditional stories and medicinal plants of the Blackfoot, which he includes in his narrative. But the real joy of this book are the stories of his time with his Blackfoot friends and family. One of his friends was Billy Jackson, a mixed-heritage Blackfoot who had scouted for Custer and was with the 7th Cavalry on the first day of fighting at the Little Bighorn.McClintock later toured widely, including in Europe, with his glass lantern slides and his first-hand stories of the rapidly-disappearing frontier.

Ten miles east of Bloomington he crossed an Indian trail running north and south.5 South of White river, near Brownstown, he recorded another Indian road, going east and west; west perhaps to the old Delaware camp at the forks of White river. There was an army crossing at the mouth of Raccoon creek 7 the trail crossed the Wabash there and followed up the right hand or west bank of the river. This fact made the mouth Of Raccoon creek prominent enough to be a beginning point of the Harrison Purchase, s in 1809. On this ten O'clock line there was an Indian trail between what is now Dana and Hillsdale.9 Since the line ran in a southeasterly direction, the traces must have crossed it nearly at right angles, or the surveyor would not have recorded them. Probably all led toward Ft. Wayne and Vincennes.10 The survey of this line was not pleasing to Tecumseh, and he so intimated to the United States government, August 10, 1810, at Vincennes.11 He was very angry at the chiefs who touched the quill, as the Indians called signing a treaty. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Old Crow Wing Trail Another reason may be found in the fact that over it I made my first prairie journey, that from one of its encamp ments 1 saw the last herd of buffalo ever seen east of the Red River, and that though I am about to describe it as seen by me in a peaceful journey late in the fall of 1860, I was to traverse it again when comparatively disused during the year of the Sioux massacre in Minnesota, as the only hope of reaching Fort Garry from St. Paul, where I then was, when a camp fire was out of the question, each river-ford and bluffof timber to be avoided, and a stealthy Indian tread to he fancied in the rustle of every leaf. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Indian Trails: Incidents of Camp and Trail Life, Covering Two Years' Exploration Through the Rocky Mountains of Canada But the tide swept on: With jealous eyes we watched the silence slipping back, the tin cans and empty fruit-jars strew our sacred soil, the mark of the axe grow more obtrusive, even the trails cleared of the debris so hard to master, yet so precious from the fact it must be mastered to succeed. Where next? Driven from our Eden, where should our tents rise again? We were grow ing lost and lonesome in the great tide which was sweeping across our playground, and we longed for wider views and new untrammelled ways. With willing ears we listened to the tales brought in by the hunters and trappers, those men of this land who are the true pioneers of the country in spite of the fact that they have written nothing and are but little known. With hearts not entirely on pelts, they had seen and now told us of valleys of great beauty, of high unknown peaks, of little known rivers, of un-named lakes, lying to the north and north-west of the country we knew so well, - a fairyland, yet a land girt about with hardships, a land whose highway was a difficult trail or no trail at all. We fretted for the strength of man, for the way was long and hard, and only the tried and stalwart might venture where cold and heat, starvation and privation stalked ever at the explorer's heels. In meek despair we bowed our heads to the inevitable, to the cutting knowledge of the superiority of the endurance of man and the years slipped by. Book excerpt: "We seemed to have reached that horizon, and the limit of all endurance, to sit with folded hands and listen calmly to the stories of the hills we so longed to see, the hills which had lured and beckoned us for years before this long list of men had ever set foot in the country." - Mary T.S. Schäffer Mary T.S. Schäffer was an avid explorer and one of the first non-Native women to venture into the heart of the Canadian Rocky Mountains, where few women - or men - had gone before. First published in 1911, Old Indian Trails of the Canadian Rockies is Schäffer's story of her adventures in the traditionally male-dominated world of climbing and exploration. It also sheds light on Native and non-Native relations at the early part of the 20th century. Full of daring adventure and romantic depictions of camp life, set against the grand backdrop of Canada's mountain landscapes, the book introduces readers to various characters from the annals of Canadian mountaineering history, including Arthur Philemon Coleman, Billy Warren, Sid Unwin, Bill Peyto and Jimmy Simpson. Old Indian Trails of the Canadian Rockies is certain to entertain and enlighten 21st-century readers, historians, hikers and climbers.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mohawk Trail: Its History and Course With Map and Illustrations The building of the new State Highway across Hoosae mountain was an event which turned a great volume of travel through a region which had been little appreciated, and seen by necessarily few tourists. With this great volume of travel over a splendid highway, bearing a name which implies a history of its own, there was awakened a desire to learn what that history is. Many travelers have asked what justification there is for supposing that there ever was an Indian trail across the mountain, and many more who knew that a trail did exist, were eager to know at what places they traversed the ancient path. In an endeavor to satisfy these inquirers, this story of the Trail has been written. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Indian Days Upon a hanging precipice atop of the Eagle Scout Butte there appeared a motionless and solitary figure - almost eagle-like he perched! The people in the camp below saw him, but none looked at him long. They turned their heads quickly away with a nervous tingling, for the height above the plains was great. Almost spirit-like among the upper clouds the young warrior sat immovable. It was Antelope. He was fasting and seeking a sign from the "Great Mystery," for such was the first step of the young and ambitious Sioux who wished to be a noted warrior among his people. He is a princely youth, among the wild Sioux, who hunts for his tribe and not for himself! About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chicago's Highways, Old and New: From Indian Trail to Motor Road The period from the incorporation of Chicago to the coming of the railroads (from I837 to 18 as I view it, was the critical period of Chicago's history. Citizens Of the Village of about people, surrounded by miles of flat, marshy land, had little basis to expect a big town here except the hope of a connection with the Mississippi River waterway system through a canal, which it was hoped sometime, somehow, might be built and which, eleven years afterwards, was, after various vicissitudes, completed. In the meantime, the town grew steadily. Its exports Of raw material and imports of manufactured goods, as shown by the meagre port records of the time, increased pretty steadily and were, at all times, greater in amount than necessary for the support of the little town, indicating that, in spite Of poor roads and bad transportation, its people were doing business with the hinterland and making Chicago, in that early day, the central market for surrounding territory. Dr. Quaife has happily selected this period for his book, and in admirable fashion has pictured the life, the travelers, and transportation methods before the coming Of the canal and the railroads; he describes an eventful period which has hereto fore had but little consideration, and has succeeded in linking the old with the new in a most interesting way.
