Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Goriot The front of the boarding-house overlooks a little garden, so that the building stands at right angles with the Rue neuve-sainte-genevieve, from which you can see the whole width of it. Along the front of the house, separating it from the garden, there runs a pebbled channel, six feet wide, beyond which there is a graveled pathway bordered with gera niums, oleanders and pomegranate trees, planted in large pots, of blue and white crockery. The en trance to this pathway is made through a small door surmounted with a placard on which is inscribed the vauquer house, and underneath: family boarding-house for ladies and gentlemen. During the daytime a latticed door, furnished with a jangling bell, allows you to see at the other end of the path, on the wall opposite the street, an arch painted by some artist of the district to imitate green marble. Under this counterfeit arch there stands a statue representing Love. The coat of varnish that covers it is scaling off, and the lovers of symbols might accept it as a myth of Parisian love, the cure for which is to be found at no great dis tance. Upon the pedestal, a half-obliterated inscrip tion recalls the date of the decoration by the enthusiasm it shows for Voltaire, on his return to Paris in 1777.
