Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Continental Towns The story of Rome is a mighty chronicle of such deep importance towards an understanding of the growth of Europe, that a feeling almost of helplessness assails me as I essay to set down in this limited space an account of the city's ancient grandeur and of its monuments. It is with a sense of awe that one enters Rome. The scene gives birth to so much re ection, the pulse quickens, the imagination is stirred by the annals of Pompey and Caesar, and the mighty names that resound in the history of the wonder ful capital; while the ruins of the days of power and pomp are as solemn tokens of the fate of all great civilisations. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his study of Golden Age and hard-boiled detective fiction from 1890 to 1950, Yan Zi-Ling argues that these two subgenres can be distinguished not only by theme and style, but by the way they structure knowledge, value, and productive labour. Using the detective as a reference point and enactor of socially based interests, Yan shows that Golden Age texts are distinguished by their conservationism (and not only by their conservatism), with the detectives’ actions serving to stabilize institutions with specific ideological aims. In contrast, the criminal investigations of the hard-boiled detective, who is poorly aligned with institutions and strong interest groups, reveal the fragility of the status quo in the face of escalating cycles of violence. Key to Yan’s discussion are theories of exchange, value, and the gift, the latter of which he suggests is more akin to detective work than is wage labour. Analyzing texts by a wide range of authors that includes Arthur Conan Doyle, Agatha Christie, Dashiell Hammett, Raymond Chandler, Dorothy Sayers, Raoul Whitfield, George Harmon Coxe, and Mickey Spillane, Yan demonstrates that the detective’s truth-generating function, most often characterized as a process of discovery rather than creation, is in fact crucial to the institutional and class-based interests that he or she serves.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections of a New England Town The interest that attached to the articles on old-time Meriden by Faith (mrs. Frances A. Breckenridge), as printed originally in Tfie Meriden Daily journal, led to the belief that published in book form they would prove entertaining, not only to present and former Meriden people, but to the readers of New England generally; for Meriden as described in Faith's quaint way in the following chapters, is typical of the New England villages of the first and second quarters of the century. To the newspaper articles have been added many chapters on subjects that cannot fail to engage the pleasant attention of all who would like to know What rural New England was like half a century and more ago. One great value that the work has is the absolutely correct historical information that it contains. What is told here is authenticated by carefully preserved family records, and personal knowledge of the author. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Old New England Town: Sketches of Life, Scenery, Character The old New England town has peculiar interest for us. It has taken a conspicuous part in the development of our social life and political institutions. And there are few towns that have achieved a more honorable distinction than Fairfield. Mindful of this fact, the Daughters of the American Revolution who constitute the Eunice Dennie Burr Chapter invited the writer of the following papers to give a course of lectures upon the old New England town which was especially dear to them. He was pleased to accept this courteous invitation, for his love of Fairfield was deep and strong, and he appreciated the fact that the town had made large and notable contributions to the life of the Colony and the Republic. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historic Towns of New England If one will walk about New England towns one will find in each a church, a town-house, and a school, and in most of them a railroad station and a factory. In the majority of them there will also be a public library, small perhaps and usually housed in the town-house, but open to all, and supported from the public funds. In the larger towns, especially in those where manufacturing is a prominent factor in the communal prosperity, a hospital, supported by public taxation, is open to all. In almost every town there is a grass-covered, tree-shaded common, which serves as a village or town park, and on it usually stand memorial tablets or statues testifying to the valor of the dead who went forth to fight in the War of the Revolution or in the Civil War. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historic Towns of the Southern States The triad of volumes dealing with the older American Historic Towns along or near the eastern coast is now complete. The three volumes, like the chapters of which they are composed, have their inevitable limitations. While neither in historical value nor in literary quality has it proved practicable to secure a uniformity of standard, editor and contributors have done the best they could, and they now feel assured that the series has proved its right to exist. It is quickening interest in our historic towns, bringing to light important facts, picturing for the patriotic reader who may not be free to make personal visits the places he would visit if he could, and making clear to him many things he would not be likely to learn in the towns themselves, however long a stay he might be free to make. Visionary leader Greg Brenneman believes that true business success and personal fulfillment are two sides of the same coin. The techniques that will grow your business will also help you achieve a rich, purposeful, and integrated life. Here, Brenneman takes what he’s learned from turning around or tuning up many businesses—including Continental Airlines and Burger King—and distills it into a simple, clear, five-step roadmap that anyone can follow. He teaches you how to: *prepare a succinct Go Forward plan *build a fortress balance sheet *grow your sales and profits *choose all-star servant leaders *empower your team For more than thirty years, Brenneman has seen these steps foster dramatic results in a variety of business environments. But he also came to realize that he could apply these same principles to improve his life and build a lasting moral legacy. He found he could make better decisions by carefully taking the most important facets of his life—faith, family, friendship, fitness, and finance—into consideration. Brenneman’s inspiring examples, from both his business and his life, demonstrate the astounding effects these steps can have when you apply them—right away and all at once.
