Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Bow China One had hoped to make some departure in regard to Bow China and its period, and give the reader stories of new traffics and fresh discoveries, but I find it is agreed that any book on the subject must, at the present day, be more of a compilation than an original work. Having read during the last twenty years all the books published on or round about Bow and its products with great enjoyment, I can only say that I hope I may not have stolen the authors' fire in any particular. But, like any other writer who follows these authorities, I must be indebted to them again and again. Where the information was not general knowledge I have mentioned its source in the text, and I beg modestly to suggest a study of the works here set forth - when you have read mine. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chinese Archery is a broad view of traditional archery in China as seen through the eyes of historians, philosophers, poets, artists, novelists and strategists from 1500 BC until the present century. The book is written around parallel text translations of classical chinese sources some famous and some little known in which Chinese writers give vivid and detailed explanations of the techniques of bow-building, archery and crossbow technique over the centuries. The author is both a sinologist and practising archer; his translations make the original Chinese texts accessible to the non-specialist. Written for readers who may never have picked up a book about China, but still containing a wealth of detail for Chinese scholars, the book brings the fascinating history of Chinese archery back to life through the voices of its most renowned practitioners.

Book excerpt: Discover four seminal masterworks of Chinese thought—Lao Tzu’s Tao Te Ching, the Analects of Confucius, the Chuang Tzu, and the Mencius—presented in one volume for the first time in nearly two centuries. Award-winning translator David Hinton offers fresh insights on the most influential texts on Taoism, Zen Buddhism, Chinese philosophy, and more. Hinton’s award–winning experience translating a wide range of ancient Chinese poets makes these books sing in English as never before. But these new versions are not only inviting and immensely readable—they also apply much-needed consistency to key philosophical terms in these texts, lending structural links and philosophical rigor heretofore unavailable in English. Breathing new life into these classics, Hinton’s new translations will stand as the definitive texts for our era. Perhaps the most broadly influential spiritual text in human history, Lao Tzu’s Tao Te Ching is the source of Taoist philosophy, which eventually developed into Ch’an (Zen) Buddhism. Equally influential in the social sphere, Confucius’ Analects is the source of social wisdom in China. The Chuang Tzu is the wild and wacky prose complement to the Tao Te Ching. And with its philosophical storytelling, the Mencius adds depth and complexity to Confucius’ vision.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two very different ethnic minority communities—the Naxi of the Lijiang area in northern Yunnan and the Tai (Dai) of Sipsong Panna (Xishuangbanna), along Yunnan’s border with Burma and Laos—are featured in this comparative study of the implementation and reception of state minority education policy in the People’s Republic of China. Based on field research and historical sources, Lessons in Being Chinese argues that state policy, which is intended to be applied uniformly across all minority regions, in fact is much more successful in some than in others. In Lijiang, elite members of the Naxi ethnic group (minzu) have a centuries-old connection with Chinese state educational systems as avenues to social mobility, and have continued this tradition under Communist rule. They participate enthusiastically in the present system, using education to gain official and professional positions. In contrast to the Lijiang area, Sipsong Panna functioned in many ways as a separate kingdom until 1950, with its own script and a separate educational system centered in Theravada Buddhist monasteries. Today, many Tai in that area still prefer monastic education for their sons, and most parents are indifferent to state education. This study finds that standardized, homogenizing state education is in itself incapable of instilling in students an identification with the Chinese state, ironically often increasing ethnic identity. Lessons in Being Chinese enhances our understanding of how state policy toward minorities works in many areas of life, and its conclusions can be extended well beyond the sphere of education. It will be of interest to both anthropologists and educators.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chinese Philosophy: An Exposition of the Main Characteristic Features of Chinese Thought But it is not the rigidity of their language alone that is at the basis of the Chinese conservatism, it is also the simplicity of the fundamental ideas of their world-view and the striking symbolism in which they are expressed and which makes it impossible for the Chi nese to think in any other modes of thought than their own. The inviolable power of their tradition is further strengthened by an im perturbable patience and unbounded reverence for the sages of yore. The former renders the people submissive to many unheard-of abuses on the part of the authorities, while the latter keeps them in faithful adhesion to established conditions. From time immemorial the highest ideal of Chinese thinkers has been to bow in modesty and submission to the insuperable gran deur of their ancient traditions. Criticism is very meek, originality of thought is strangled ere it can-develop, and any attempted pro gress beyond the old masters appears to them as insanity. It is as if a Christian would dare to be better or wiser than Christ. In a word, the whole Chinese civilisation is saturated with the belief in the divinity, the perfection, and the unqualified excellence of its principles, doctrines, and institutions.
