Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Scottish Tartans: With Historical Sketches of the Clans and Families of Scotland; The Badges and Arms of the Chiefs of the Clans and Families When the pioneers had gone to their long rest, their sons and daughters still cast a longing looktoward the old clan country from which they drew their origin. Instead of being the forbidden garb of the outlaw, the Highland dress won renewed favour in the new home, and at every reunion of the scattered race it was the special token of long and honourable descent from heroic ancestors. Clan Societies grew up and multiplied in the New World and in Colonial Britain. Wherever Scots men dwelt, the sympathetic feeling of kinship revived, and the tartan became symbolic not of the Highlands alone but of Scotland as a whole. This had indeed been recognised about the time of the Union of Parliaments in 1707 and in the early eighteenth century the tartan was 'worn in the City of Edinburgh, the first regiment to wear the tartan being the Royal Company of Archers. Ardent Scotsmen began to inquire if they also were not historically entitled to wear the tartan of a clan from which, perchance, they were descended. Historically, many were disappointed, at least in finding that they belonged to none of the great Clans or Names, even of the Borders, by whom special tartans were worn. Clansmen they were not; but what they could not wear as a birthright they wore out of admiration for the dress which typified the heroic qualities of the Scottish land. The District Tartans and such old setts as the Jacobite Tartan, connoting a love for the patriarchal blood-bond symbolised by the Royal House, served the purpose of these. Among the clansmen themselves there was confusion as to the accurate choice of the tartan which would show the clan to which they lineally belonged. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An historically and critically sound - and contemporary - evaluation of tartan and tartanry based on proper contextualisation and coherent analysis. This critical re-evaluation of one of the more controversial aspects of recent debates on Scottish culture draws together contributions from leading researchers in a wide variety of disciplines, resulting in a highly accessible yet authoritative volume. This book, like tartan, weaves together two strands. The first, like a warp, considers the significance of tartan in Scottish history and culture during the last four centuries, including tartan's role in the development of diaspora identities in North America. The second, like a weft, considers the place of tartan and rise of tartanry in the national and international representations of Scottishness, including heritage, historical myth-making, popular culture, music hall, literature, film, comedy, rock and pop music, sport and 'high' culture. From Tartan to Tartanry offers fresh insight into and new perspectives on key cultural phenomena, from the iconic role of the Scottish regiments to the role of tartan in rock music. It argues that tartan may be fun, but it also plays a wide range of fascinating, important and valuable roles in Scottish and international culture.

Book excerpt: "Together, these two books present the most scholarly study of and most reliable work of reference for the identification of the traditional tartans, as well as establish a canon for their correct weaving. D.C. Stewart's magisterial work was first published in 1950, and it built upon the work of his father, D.W. Stewart, author of Old and rare Scottish tartans. The first part of the book is an outline of the history of the use of tartans, and discusses tartan designs in general, with particular reference to their significance as distinguishing one clan from another. This is followed by a clan-by-clan description of the individual designs. There are full-color illustrations throughout, as well as the color strips which Stewart used to illustrate the individual tartans. In his Commentary, Scarlett ... brings Stewart's book up to date and provides corrections and addenda without interfering with the tone of the original volume"--Container.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book argues that while Anglo-Saxon culture has given rise to virtually no myths at all, myth has played a central role in the historical development of Scottish identity. Hugh Trevor-Roper explores three myths across 400 years of Scottish history: the political myth of the "ancient constitution" of Scotland; the literary myth, including Walter Scott as well as Ossian and ancient poetry; and the sartorial myth of tartan and the kilt, invented--ironically, by Englishmen--in quite modern times. Trevor-Roper reveals myth as an often deliberate cultural construction used to enshrine a people's identity. While his treatment of Scottish myth is highly critical, indeed debunking, he shows how the ritualization and domestication of Scotland's myths as local color diverted the Scottish intelligentsia from the path that led German intellectuals to a dangerous myth of racial supremacy. This compelling manuscript was left unpublished on Trevor-Roper's death in 2003 and is now made available for the first time. Written with characteristic elegance, lucidity, and wit, and containing defiant and challenging opinions, it will absorb and provoke Scottish readers while intriguing many others. "I believe that the whole history of Scotland has been coloured by myth; and that myth, in Scotland, is never driven out by reality, or by reason, but lingers on until another myth has been discovered, or elaborated, to replace it."-Hugh Trevor-Roper

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stripes, Grids and Checks considers the nature of lines and assemblies of lines, including stripes and grids, as well as related phenomena such as checks, tilings and patterns, regular and irregular, repeating and non-repeating. A wide range of examples are drawn from urban and rural environments, at the macro and micro levels, in land- and cityscapes, buildings, and other designed constructions, compositions and objects. Considered conventionally, checks, periodic tilings and regular patterns owe their compositional arrangements to an order imposed by an underlying grid structure. The intention in this book is to analyse, explain and illustrate the nature of each design type, to identify the structural (or geometric) similarities between each and to show how the manipulation of various underlying grid structures can provide innovative compositional frameworks for artists and designers. The discussion is richly illustrated with 400 black and white images and an eight page colour section.
