Book Synopsis Realising the Benefits of Transboundary Water Cooperation in the Cubango-Okavango River Basin by : Roberto Martín-Hurtado
Download or read book Realising the Benefits of Transboundary Water Cooperation in the Cubango-Okavango River Basin written by Roberto Martín-Hurtado and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The CORB [Cubango-Okavango River Basin] has a high environmental value, while it suffers high levels of poverty and faces large uncertainties regarding the possible impact of climate change. The CORB is still relatively environmentally pristine, but this will not last, due to the pressures of poverty-induced catchment degradation, particularly in the north-west part of the upper basin. Possible threats to the CORB's health are becoming very real with the need for development of riparian countries. Successful cooperative management of the world's transboundary basins is key for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Angola, Botswana and Namibia have been cooperating in the knowledge and management of the CORB in the framework of the Permanent Okavango Basin River Commission (OKACOM) for over 20 years. The CORB has an agreed policy framework document, the Strategic Action Programme, that lays down the principles for the development of the basin and improvements of the livelihoods of its people through the cooperative management of the basin and its shared natural resources. The OKACOM shared vision is to achieve an 'economically prosperous, socially just and environmentally healthy development of the Cubango-Okavango River Basin'"--Executive summary.

Book Synopsis Handbook of Catchment Management by : Robert C. Ferrier
Download or read book Handbook of Catchment Management written by Robert C. Ferrier and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2009-09-11 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the fundamental requirement for aninterdisciplinary catchment based approach to managing andprotecting water resources that crucially includes anunderstanding of land use and its management. In thisapproach the hydrological cycle links mountains to the sea, andecosystems in rivers, groundwaters, lakes, wetlands, estuaries andcoasts forming an essential continuum directly influenced by humanactivity. The book provides a synthesis of current and future thinking incatchment management, and shows how the specific problems thatarise in water use policy can be addressed within the context of anintegrated approach to management. The book is written for advancedstudents, researchers, fellow academics and water sectorprofessionals such as planners and regulators. The intention is tohighlight examples and case studies that have resonance not onlywithin natural sciences and engineering but with academicsin other fields such as socio-economics, law and policy.

Book Synopsis Valuing Development, Environment and Conservation by : Sarah Bracking
Download or read book Valuing Development, Environment and Conservation written by Sarah Bracking and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-17 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Policy-makers are increasingly trying to assign economic values to areas such as ecologies, the atmosphere, even human lives. These new values, assigned to areas previously considered outside of economic systems, often act to qualify, alter or replace former non-pecuniary values. Valuing Development, Environment and Conservation looks to explore the complex interdependencies, contradictions and trade-offs that can take place between economic values and the social, environmental, political and ethical systems that inform non-monetary valuation processes. Using rich empirical material, the book explores the processes of valuation, their components, calculative technologies, and outcomes in different social, ecological and conservation domains. The book gives reasons for why economic calculation tends to dominate in practice, but also presents new insights on how the disobedient materiality of things and the ingenuity of human and non-human agencies can combine and frustrate the dominant economic models within calculative processes. This book highlights the tension between, on the one hand, a dominant model that emphasises technical and ‘universalising’ criteria, and on the other hand, valuation practice in specific local contexts which is more likely to negotiate criteria that are plural, incommensurable and political. This book is perfect for researchers and students within development studies, environment, geography, politics, sociology and anthropology who are looking for new insights into how processes of valuation take place in the 21st century, and with what consequential outcomes.
Book Synopsis Inland Fishes and Fisheries of NAMIBIA by : Glenn Merron
Download or read book Inland Fishes and Fisheries of NAMIBIA written by Glenn Merron and published by LeRue Press (LRP). This book was released on 2023-10-27 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors of INLAND FISHES AND FISHERIES OF NAMIBIA are scientists with many years of experience in their fields of work and research. Some were my students when I was a Lecturer of Zoology at Stellenbosch University many years ago. Some were members of my staff here in Namibia while I was Director of Fisheries and later Executive Director (Permanent Secretary) of the MFMR. There are no other scientists cum authors better equipped for the task of offering a high quality overview covering the freshwater fishes of Namibia and related issues linked to this subject. This book is a groundbreaking, first of its kind for Namibia, a scientifically orientated record of the topic of freshwater fish in our country. However, at the same time, it has been written in such a way that it also offers a leisurely journey for the layman wishing to increase general knowledge about Namibia's freshwater fishes. Book Synopsis Biodiversity of Angola by : Brian J. Huntley
Download or read book Biodiversity of Angola written by Brian J. Huntley and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-02-20 with total page 549 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access multi-authored book presents a 'state of the science' synthesis of knowledge on the biodiversity of Angola, based on sources in peer-reviewed journals, in books and where appropriate, unpublished official reports. The book identifies Angola as one of the most biologically diverse countries in Africa, but notes that its fauna, flora, habitats and the processes that drive the dynamics of its ecosystems are still very poorly researched and documented. This 'state of the science' synthesis is for the use of all students of Angola's biodiversity, and for those responsible for the planning, development and sustainable management of the country's living resources. The volume brings together the results of expeditions and research undertaken in Angola since the late eighteenth century, with emphasis on work conducted in the four decades since Angola's independence in 1975. The individual chapters have been written by leaders in their fields, and reviewed by peers familiar with the region.
Download or read book Water Conflicts written by Mark Zeitoun and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-04-02 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water Conflicts applies cutting-edge thinking to identify pathways that can transform complex water conflicts. It challenges existing power-blind and politics-lite analysis that is very deeply-held and recurring in debates that suggest causal links between scarcity and violence-or peace. This book presents a much needed revision of transboundary water analysis, leading to a rethink on the way water is used and contested, with a focus on harm experienced both by the most vulnerable water users and the environment. Recognizing that conflicts are never static, Mark Zeitoun, Naho Mirumachi, and Jeroen Warner's "transformative analysis" provides multi-disciplinary tools and perspectives to understand and address the complexities involved. The approach is stress-tested through dozens of examples around the globe, and it incorporates collective evidence and knowledge of the London Water Research Group. The insights on water diplomacy will be most welcome by analysts, activists, diplomats, and all others tackling water conflicts. Seeking to motivate improvement of transboundary water arrangements towards further equity and sustainability as a practical agenda, the book is a fresh antidote to the detached role that researchers and policymakers often play.

An interdisciplinary group of authors examines the need to establish a constructive dialogue between scientists, policy-makers and local stakeholders and outline a future research agenda, including consideration of the impacts of climate change and the pressures of regional development, for wetland management.
