Book excerpt: One class of advanced diesel engines operates with low heat rejection and high operating temperatures; piston-ring / liner lubrication is a major problem for these engines. This study attempts to illustrate the time-dependent thermal environment around the top piston ring and lubricant in these advanced engines. Particular emphasis will be placed on the maximum lubricant temperature. The analysis starts with a standard cycle simulation and a global finite-element analysis of the piston and liner in relative motion. A more detailed finite-element model, which considers variable oil film thickness on the liner, focuses on the top ring and lubricant and uses the groove and liner temperatures generated in the global analysis as boundary conditions. Results for different heat rejection engine configurations are presented. We observe that because of major transient effects, high lubricant temperature is experienced not only at top ring reversal but also down the liner to bottom ring reversal.

Book Synopsis The Influence of Honing on the Wear of Ceramic Coated Piston Rings and Cylinder Liners by : Kevin C. Radil
Download or read book The Influence of Honing on the Wear of Ceramic Coated Piston Rings and Cylinder Liners written by Kevin C. Radil and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reciprocating wear tests were performed to investigate the effects of honing on the wear of ceramic coated piston rings and cylinder liners. The baseline or control cases consisted of testing ceramic coated rings against ceramic coated liner specimens whose surfaces were ground and lapped smooth. A second series of tests were performed with liner specimens with base and plateau honed surfaces. Test conditions were chosen to simulate the temperatures, pressures, and boundary lubricated conditions present at top ring reversal in a conventional diesel engine. Wear factor comparisons between the baseline cases and the tests with the honed liner specimens indicate that honing alone is not sufficient to ensure an improvement in ring and liner wear.

This book was released on 1999 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present study is aimed at making sure in what condition of oil film on the piston skirt is, and how it affects piston frictional force. A test gasoline engine was measured for piston frictional force, skirt and ring oil film thickness, and clearance between the skirt and the cylinder. An analysis was made of the measurement results to carry out the object of the study. As a result, it is made clear that the piston at the expansion stroke comes into hard contact with the cylinder in a very limited area of the skirt top by way of thin oil film. In addition, oil film thickness varies according to the condition of such contact, affecting piston frictional force, while there is no correlation in oil film thickness between the skirt top and the piston ring.

This book was released on 1999 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A technique for estimating the instantaneous frictional force between the piston assembly and the cylinder wall has been developed by improving the moveable bore technique. The technique can be easily applied to small multi-cylinder engines. The technique was applied to a four-cylinder SI engine under various engine speeds, engine loads and oil viscosity. An instrument for measuring the oil film thickness on the piston rings was also developed by using the commercially available gap sensors. It was possible to measure the oil film thickness on thin oil ring rails as well as on the compression rings. The frictional characteristics were established as a relationship between frictional mean effective pressure and a parameter which is the product of the piston mean speed and the oil viscosity.
