Book excerpt: In Troubled Waters, Paul F. Paskoff offers a comprehensive examination of the federal government's river improvements program, which aimed to reduce hazards to navigation on the great rivers of America's interior during the early and mid-nineteenth century. Danger on the rivers came in a variety of forms. Shoals, rapids, ice, rocks, sandbars, and uprooted trees and submerged steamboat wrecks lodged in river beds were the most common perils and accounted for the largest number of steamboat disasters. This daunting array of river hazards required a similarly broad range of efforts to remove or at least ameliorate them. Against a variety of obstacles -- natural, political, and technological -- the river improvements program succeeded in reducing the rate of steamboat loss, even as steamboat traffic dramatically increased. Its success, Paskoff argues, demonstrates that the federal government was far more active than generally thought in promoting economic growth and development in the years leading up to the Civil War. The river improvements program was one of the most volatile issues in national, sectional, and state politics, touching on questions of economic development, constitutional law, partisan politics, and sectional rivalry. Paskoff examines the controversial program from its beginnings during the early republic to 1844, giving careful attention to the policies of Andrew Jackson's administration. He explores the array of objections to the program -- some grounded in a strict interpretation of the Constitution and others in a concern over alleged federal wantonness, corruption, and waste -- and follows the political story through the administration of James K. Polk forward to secession. Paskoff also explains the fiscal, economic, and technological aspects of the hazard problem and its solution, analyzing the federal government's fiscal condition, its capacity to undertake such an ambitious program, and the influence of conditions in the larger economy, including effects of the Mexican War, upon the federal government's finances. Paskoff's lively analysis rests on a bedrock of impressive quantitative evidence, including databases containing every documented steamboat wreck -- more than 1,200 -- on American rivers, lakes, and coastal waters; construction and engine data for more than 600 steamboat packets; and all relevant federal appropriations and expenditures measures, more than 2,300 spending projects in all. Vigorously researched and vividly told, Troubled Waters is an essential contribution to the history of internal improvements in the antebellum United States.

Book excerpt: This volume collects essays and documents from a wide selection of sources--many now out of print and difficult to locate--to provide a highly readable story of the settlement and development of the "New Connecticut" region of Ohio. Four divisions in the book logically organize the social, economic, and political study of the region: "Conquest and Settlement: Native Americans to New Englanders"; "The Pioneers: Town Building, Society, and the Emergence of an Economy"; "The Transition Years; Slavery, the Civil War, and the Reserve in National Politics, 1850-1880"; and "A Changing Legacy: Industrialism, Ethnicity, and the Age of Reform." The volume ends in 1920, when the unique features of the Western Reserve of Ohio--the architecture, the landmarks, the New England lifestyle--had largely faded into American history as a result of industrialism, urbanism, and the pressure of a changing ethnic base.

Book excerpt: Ohio has never had so complete a place-name volume as this. With over 2,500 entries, this volume covers all the cities, towns, villages, hamlets, and communities of the state. Here you can learn when and how towns got their names. Although current names are the primary focus, earlier names are also provided and discussed when information is available. Many interesting stories attached to a place have also been included. This is an essential and fascinating reference book for scholars, teachers, students, and other individuals interested in the history of Ohio. Erie County The County takes its name from the Erie Indians. The word ""Erie"" is said to translate as ""cat."" Alternative explanations include ""the nation of the cats,"" and, in the Huron tongue, eriche or erige, thought to signify ""lake of the cats."" The reference to cats is believed to refer to a species of wildcat that frequented the region occupied by the Erie Indians.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ohio and Her Western Reserve: With a Story of Three States; Leading to the Latter, From Connecticut, by Way of Wyoming, Its Indian Wars and Massacre The theme of these pages is twofold: a duality of endeavors, exhibiting a contrast of means, and yet reaching a community of outcome. Ohio - now arrived at the centennial of statehood - was resultant from the forgathering of a great number of diverse fragments finally compacted and fused in a homogenous whole by various causes. As the most composite State in the Union, it was formed by the concentrated march of an army of occupation from all of the States. These elements, widely variant as they were, had one principle in common - an inherent conviction of the righteousness of freedom, which led some to dictate, and all to assent to, a basic law against the extension of slavery.
