Book Synopsis Gerald O'Donovan: A Life by : John F. Ryan
Download or read book Gerald O'Donovan: A Life written by John F. Ryan and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2022-11-17 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first full-length study of the life and work of novelist Gerald O’Donovan (1871–1942), a Catholic priest and social and cultural activist who, having abandoned the priesthood, became a writer and publisher. As a priest in Loughrea, Co. Galway, he was a very public figure in Irish life in several different areas. He was friendly with W. B. Yeats, Lady Gregory and George Moore and actively promoted the ‘Celtic Revival’. He was also a friend of Douglas Hyde and Sir Horace Plunkett and, for a number of years, he was a national figure in their respective organizations, the Gaelic League and the Co-operative Movement. After his marriage to Beryl Verschoyle, he moved to England and subsequently published six novels, the best-known and most controversial of which was Father Ralph (1913), a portrait of the artist as a priest. He also spent time working in the British Department of Propaganda under Lord Northcliffe, where H.G. Wells was one of his colleagues. This biography of an important and strangely neglected figure allows us new insights into a whole range of interesting cultural moments in twentieth-century Irish life, including the beginnings of literary modernism, the flourishing of the Irish literary revival and the emergence of a dissident strand within the Catholic clergy. Based on a rich and previously untapped array of archival material in Ireland, Britain and the US, the book provides both a much-needed reassessment of O'Donovan's work and also a history of Irish writing during those early decades of the twentieth century that saw the development of a new and powerful national literature.

Book Synopsis O Sing Unto the Lord by : Andrew Gant
Download or read book O Sing Unto the Lord written by Andrew Gant and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2017-03-22 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this expansive cultural history, Andrew Gant traces English sacred music from the Latin chant of late antiquity to the great proliferation and diversification of styles seen in contemporary repertoires. The book explores church music in its great variety of forms and performance contexts: cathedral music and music performed at small country parishes, hymns sung in church and at gatherings, all the way up to today’s mixture and hybridization of the traditional and contemporary styles. Most of all, it illuminates how political battles and sweeping changes in worship affected the church music profession; how musicians, clergy, and worshipers responded; and how the repertory was reinvented many times over as a result. This work was first brought out by Profile Books in 2015. The author has contributed a new preface for our edition, offering reflections on English church music in its American contexts.

The invitation to the Gee Museum was delivered by bees. It wasn’t addressed to anyone, but Ben knows that it was meant for him. Why else would the images on the postcard have stirred up memories of his father, who was lost at sea long ago? Ben makes his way to the old dilapidated building to find a host of curious talking animals awaiting his arrival. They are certain he is the only one who can save the museum. But Ben and the animals in the Gee collection will have to outwit a devious rival museum owner and a greedy land developer. With a bit of luck, some strange magic, and a little help from his mom, Ben might succeed in ensuring the future of the museum — and finding the answers about his father that he’s been searching for his whole life. Helen Cooper’s first novel brims with mystery and hope, and her lovely illustrations bring the wonders of the Gee Museum to life.
